Rubinite Beginners Guide — Focus, Marks & Your First Bosses (2026)

Rubinite is a dark-fantasy pixel-art boss rush from Cup Dog Games and GameWorks Ventures: no open world, no trash mobs, just a chain of duels against bloodthirsty monsters called Blood Recipients. Your blade alone barely scratches them — the entire game is built around one loop: hold Focus to read the enemy, stack Pure Blood Marks, and spend them on a Critical Thrust. Master that loop and everything else is detail.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • How the boss-rush structure works (Hub → boss → back to base)
  • The Focus → Marks → Critical Thrust loop, step by step
  • Perfect Dodge, darts and the grab counter — the three defensive answers
  • Why Blood Dust makes dying painless and half-health payouts matter
  • What to do at the Hub (Roy, Wichiwi, skill tree)
  • A practical plan for your first two bosses: The Beast, then Guardian Faye

What Is Rubinite and How the Game Is Structured

Rubinite casts you as Ruby, a princess who escaped the Scarlet Kingdom after the Witch destroyed her family, and now fights her way home. It launched July 23, 2026 (July 22 UTC) on PC and macOS at $19.99, with a free demo. It is single-player only — no co-op, no multiplayer.

The structure is a loop:

  1. Pick a destination from the map — each point is a Blood Recipient arena.
  2. Walk up to the boss and fight it (no trash mobs in between).
  3. Win, or die — either way you return to the Hub.
  4. Spend currency and upgrades at the Hub, then pick the next fight.

There are roughly eight named Blood Recipients on the normal route plus the final boss, Witch Alcina, with a training opponent and two more bosses on the post-game route (see the boss order guide for the full sequence). Expect around 4 hours 20 minutes for the first ending — community figure, see our how long to beat page — and a full second route after it.

Per the official announcement from Cup Dog Games, Rubinite is a 2D pixel art boss rush action game built around a unique core mechanic — Focus: "By focusing on enemies and observing their movements, players pinpoint weak spots and land precise, critical strikes."

The Core Loop: Focus → Marks → Critical Thrust

Every Blood Recipient hides a Pure Blood Crystal that only Ruby's Crimson Eyes can see. Focus is how you read it. The loop never changes:

  1. Hold Focus while aiming at the boss. A numeric counter climbs while the read stays on target.
  2. The read applies Pure Blood Marks to the crystal — up to 3 at a time.
  3. Get close and release a Critical Thrust to consume the Marks for real damage.

Three rules make the loop click:

  • Closer is faster. Standing near the boss fills the observation gauge much quicker than hovering at max range. Earn a safe pocket after a dodge or boss recovery, step in, and Focus hard.
  • Getting hit resets the charge. A hit mid-read cancels your accumulation, and banked Marks can be wiped too. Treat contact as a full rebuild, not a soft whiff.
  • Marks cap at 3 — spend them. Thrusting at one Mark is inefficient unless the boss is one hit from death. Two Marks is the default safe spend; three if you can name the next safe second.

Your light attacks are not useless — they poke, close distance, and finish low-health bosses — but they are not how you win. Real damage is gated behind the Marks.

The beginner mindset shift

If a fight feels impossible, stop swinging blind. The Pure Blood Crystal is the fight — hold Focus longer between openings and the boss falls apart. Button-mashing a Blood Recipient teaches you nothing.

Perfect Dodge: the Shortcut to Instant Marks

A Perfect Dodge — dodging on the impact frame of an attack, not the wind-up — banks a Mark instantly, with no Focus hold. Perfect Dodging while already holding Focus also accelerates the observation meter. That makes dodge timing the fastest path to sustained damage.

Use Focus when the boss is recovering and you have space; use Perfect Dodge when attacks are chaining with no gap. Full timing details are in our Perfect Dodge guide.

Early rolls are the silent killer

Most "I can't Perfect Dodge" complaints are dodges fired at the telegraph instead of the hit. Watch the weapon, claw or projectile that actually connects — not Ruby's dodge animation — and roll on contact.

Darts, Grabs and the Three Defensive Answers

Rubinite has three different defensive answers, and learning which is which is where most beginners plateau:

Attack Answer
Normal strikes, projectiles, body attacks Dodge through the actual hit
Red-flash aerial attack (enemy jumps) Enter Focus and fire a dart as the move commits
Grab (boss glows purple) Sunder Slash (focus + attack) as the grab makes contact — this also stuns the boss and grants a Mark

Darts are a skill you unlock early (focus + the dart button; hold to charge a spread). Sunder Slash comes from the skill tree. Later bosses chain these answers back-to-back, so "just dodge everything" stops working after the first couple of fights. The Focus system guide covers the input timing in detail.

Blood Dust: an Economy That Forgives Death

Blood Dust is Rubinite's main currency, and its design is unusually kind:

  • You keep it on death. No Souls-style wallet wipe. Your Focus mistakes cost time and pride, not progress.
  • Half-health payouts. Reduce a boss to roughly half HP and you bank a large Dust reward even if you die afterward. That single rule makes "one more attempt" rational.
  • Arena objects pay too. Breaking destructibles in a safe second is free wallet growth.

Spend Dust at the Hub between attempts — on Talismans (crafted by Wichiwi) and skill-tree upgrades. The Blood Dust guide breaks down the full economy, including why hoarding "until I know the best build" usually means fighting Guardian Faye naked.

Spend after every serious attempt

Unspent Blood Dust is zero power. A mediocre Talisman equipped beats a perfect craft that never gets bought. Cash out Dust after each Dust-spike session — win or lose.

The Hub: Roy, Wichiwi and the Skill Tree

Between fights you return to the Cathedral (also called the Monastery), which expands as you progress:

  • Roy — the hunter who rescued Ruby. He gives story beats, unlocks the skill tree after The Beast, and later unlocks Meditation (boss rematches) after your first Mana Source kill.
  • Wichiwi — the lizard scientist who crafts Talismans and converts your spoils. Give him damaged talismans (like the Damaged White Talisman found in a Monastery chest) to add new crafts to his shop.
  • Skill tree — spend Blood Dust on new techniques and passives. Explosive Strike is the community-favorite early pick because it stays useful deep into the game; Darts and Sunder Slash are the counter-skills you actually need.
  • Two currenciesBlood Dust (earned from fights) and Impure Crystals (earned only from boss defeats). Wichiwi's shop takes both.

Check for new rooms and memories after every major boss — the game gates story progress (and the true ending) behind Hub exploration.

Your First Two Bosses: The Beast and Guardian Faye

The free demo (about 40 minutes, two bosses) is the perfect training arc for the full game.

The Beast (Western Frontier) — a four-armed goat-skull monster that opens with three tackles, then uses a two-swing melee combo that can end in a stone throw. Past half HP it summons rock spikes (marked by white circles on the ground — stop Focusing and move). Plan: dodge the dash, step in, Focus while it recovers from the combo, bank two Marks, Thrust, reset spacing. This is the fight that teaches you the whole game.

Guardian Faye (Great Capital Bridge) — a rhythm duel. She summons two floating swords that strike three times; her melee hits are deliberately delayed; she has a purple grab; and past 50% HP she summons four swords and teleports between them. Unlike The Beast, Faye survives your first fight — you repel her and she escapes (that's the difference between the "Repelled the Guardian" and "Defeated Faye" achievements, see our achievements guide).

If Faye deletes you

Stop forcing Focus holds mid-string. During her sword phases, Perfect Dodge for Marks and only Focus on recoveries you can name. When a grab cue appears, break Focus and Sunder Slash it.

FAQ

How do I play Rubinite?

Pick a boss on the map, hold Focus to read its Pure Blood Crystal, stack up to 3 Pure Blood Marks, then spend them on a Critical Thrust. Dodge normal attacks, dart red aerial attacks, and counter grabs with Sunder Slash. Spend Blood Dust at the Hub between fights.

How do I actually damage bosses in Rubinite?

Ruby's normal slashes barely scratch Blood Recipients. Real damage comes from Focus Marks + Critical Thrust. Light attacks are for poking, closing distance, and finishing off low-health bosses.

Do I lose Blood Dust when I die in Rubinite?

No. Blood Dust is kept on death, and pushing a boss to roughly half health pays a bonus chunk even if you lose the fight.

How long is the Rubinite demo?

About 40 minutes — it covers the tutorial, The Beast and Guardian Faye, the Hub, and the first Talisman crafting. Progress does not carry into the full game.

Is Rubinite multiplayer?

No. Rubinite is single-player only — no co-op, no multiplayer, no crossplay. It runs on PC (Windows) and macOS.
