Subnautica Power Cell Charger guide: fragment locations, the build recipe, charge rates including Ion Power Cells, and the best base setups.
Subnautica Power Cell Charger — Fragments, Recipe and Power Tips
The Power Cell Charger is the appliance that recharges the 200-energy Power Cells used by the Cyclops, Prawn Suit and Seamoth — two cells at once, in parallel. You unlock it by scanning two fragments, found most reliably in the Northwestern Mushroom Forest wrecks and on the Sea Treader's Path, and build it with the Habitat Builder for 1 Advanced Wiring Kit, 2 Ruby and 2 Titanium. It charges standard cells at about 30 energy per minute — and it can charge Ion Power Cells (1,000 energy) at a much faster rate, which is the trick most power guides miss.

Per the official Subnautica Wiki: "The Power Cell Charger is an Appliance that can be built using the Habitat Builder and placed in a Cyclops or Seabase. It is used to recharge Power Cells. Two Fragments must be scanned to acquire the Power Cell Charger Blueprints."
Where to Find the Fragments
Only two scans are needed — the fastest blueprint unlock in the game's appliance line. Confirmed locations (official wiki + subnauticamap.io cross-checked):
| Location | Notes |
|---|---|
| Northwestern Mushroom Forest wreck | The classic spot — fragments inside the big wreck |
| Sea Treader's Path | Fragments along the seabed and near the wreck |
| Wrecks near Lifepod 19 (Sparse Reef / Deep Sparse Reef) | 3 fragments around the wreck cluster — a favorite because you're already there for lithium |
| Wreck 1,186 m west of Lifepod 5 | 2 fragments in this wreck |
| Jellyshroom Cave Degasi Seabase | 1 fragment inside the abandoned base |
The Sparse Reef route is the efficiency play: Lifepod 19 sits in the Deep Sparse Reef, which is the best early lithium spot (see our lithium guide). One Seamoth trip gets you the charger fragments and a dozen loose lithium. Two birds, one dive.
Recipe and Placement
| Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Advanced Wiring Kit | 1 |
| Ruby | 2 |
| Titanium | 2 |
Built with the Habitat Builder, placed inside any seabase module or the Cyclops. Two slots — it holds and charges two Power Cells simultaneously, drawing power from whatever the building/vehicle is connected to (solar, bioreactor, nuclear, thermal, or the Cyclops' own cell bank).
The classic trap: put a Power Cell Charger in the Cyclops, charge your spare cells from the Cyclops' own 1,200–6,000 energy, and you've created a perpetual-motion machine... except the game patched that exploit out. Charging drains the same amount it adds — the wiki notes the exploit was removed because the charger used to out-charge the Cyclops' drain with the Engine Efficiency Module. Today, a Cyclops charger is only useful at a thermal vent or at your base's grid: park the Cyclops over a heat source, charge the spares from the Thermal Reactor, and never waste the sub's own cells.
How Fast Does It Charge?
The wiki's charge data (verified against the charger's behavior in-game):
| Cell type | Charge rate | Time to full |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Power Cell (200 energy) | ~30 energy/min per cell | ~6 min 40 s |
| Ion Power Cell (1,000 energy) | 150 energy/min per cell (5× rate) | ~6 min 40 s |
Two quirks worth knowing:
- The charge rate quintuples for Ion Power Cells — so an Ion cell charges at 5× the speed of a standard one, and still finishes in the same ~6:40 because it has 5× the capacity.
- Mixing cell types in the two slots is allowed; the wiki even notes that a not-full Ion cell in one slot boosts the effective charge rate of a standard cell in the other.
The patched exploit was the Cyclops draining itself. What still works: a base Power Cell Charger powered by geothermal (Thermal Plant) or nuclear — both produce free, unlimited energy, so you can burn 10% of a Cyclops' cells, dock the sub, and let the free grid top everything back up. Pair that with the Ion Power Cell (1,000 energy each — six in a Cyclops = 6,000 total, covered in our Cyclops guide) and you can run the deep ocean indefinitely.
Ion Power Cells — the Upgrade That Changes Everything
Ion Power Cells are the endgame battery: 1,000 energy vs the standard 200. How to get them:
- Craft them — an Ion Power Cell needs 2 Ion Cubes (found in the Alien Thermal Plant and various Precursor caches) at a standard Fabricator; the recipe is in the blueprint list once you scan an Ion Cube.
- Found in the wild — a handful spawn in the Primary Containment Facility and the Alien Thermal Plant's lower levels.
- Scope — six Ion Cells in a Cyclops quintuple its endurance; a Prawn Suit with one Ion cell effectively never docks.
Ion Cells are exactly the reason the Lava Zone expeditions in our Active Lava Zone guide feel comfortable: with ion power and the Thermal Reactor Module, the ~1,300 m run stops being a fuel puzzle.
Best Setups
- Main base: 1–2 Chargers in the power room, fed by thermal or nuclear. This is your vehicle pit-stop — dock the Seamoth/Prawn in the Moonpool, hot-swap dead cells into the chargers.
- Cyclops: only worth it if you're parked on a thermal vent or have the Thermal Reactor Module — otherwise it cannibalizes the sub's own energy. If you do mount one, it pairs with the engine-off stealth trick from our Cyclops pilot guide.
- Forward base (Lost River / Grand Reef): one Charger + Thermal Plant covers the mid-game deep grind — and it's the single best quality-of-life build in the whole game if you're Prawn-mining (see the Lost River guide for where to park it).
The Battery Charger (small 100-energy batteries) is a separate blueprint with its own fragments in the Grassy Plateaus wrecks near Lifepod 17. Build both next to each other: tools eat batteries, vehicles eat Power Cells, and one wall of chargers covers everything. The Battery Charger's 9 energy/min per battery (~11 min per battery) is slower but free.
FAQ
Where do I find Power Cell Charger fragments in Subnautica?
Two scans required. Best spots: the Northwestern Mushroom Forest wreck, the Sea Treader's Path, the wrecks near Lifepod 19 in the Sparse Reef (3 fragments), a wreck 1,186 m west of Lifepod 5, and the Jellyshroom Cave Degasi base (1).
What is the Power Cell Charger recipe?
1 Advanced Wiring Kit, 2 Ruby and 2 Titanium, built with the Habitat Builder and placed inside a seabase module or the Cyclops.
Can the Power Cell Charger charge Ion Power Cells?
Yes. Ion Power Cells (1,000 energy) charge at 5× the standard rate (150 energy/min) and reach full in about 6 minutes 40 seconds — the same time as a standard cell.
How fast does the Power Cell Charger charge?
Standard Power Cells charge at roughly 30 energy per minute per slot, full in ~6:40. Both slots run in parallel, so two cells charge simultaneously.
Should I put a Power Cell Charger in the Cyclops?
Only if the Cyclops is parked over a thermal vent or has the Thermal Reactor Module. Otherwise it drains the sub's own power — the old infinite-charge exploit was patched out.
