Subnautica Modification Station: where the 3 fragments spawn, the build recipe, every upgrade it crafts (depth MK2/MK3, tanks, fins).
Subnautica Modification Station — Recipe, Fragments and Every Upgrade
The Modification Station is the machine that turns good equipment into late-game equipment: it upgrades your tanks, fins, knife and cannon, and it's the only place you craft Seamoth, Prawn and Cyclops depth modules MK2 and MK3. You unlock it by scanning three fragments scattered through the Crag Field, Mushroom Forest, Sparse Reef and a handful of wrecks, then build it with 1 Computer Chip, 1 Titanium, 1 Diamond and 1 Lead. This guide covers every fragment location, the build recipe, the full upgrade list with real recipes, and why it belongs on your Cyclops before any deep expedition.
Here's what you'll learn:
- Every Modification Station fragment location, safe to dangerous
- The exact build recipe and how early you can realistically get it
- The complete upgrade list — what each one costs and why it matters
- Modification Station vs Vehicle Upgrade Console vs Cyclops fabricator

How to Get the Blueprint (All 3 Fragment Locations)
The blueprint needs three fragments scanned — there is no data box for it. The official wiki lists fragments on the seabed and inside wrecks:
| Source | Locations |
|---|---|
| Seabed | Crag Field, Mushroom Forest, Sparse Reef |
| Wrecks | Bulb Zone wreck, Grassy Plateaus wreck, Mountains wreck, Northwestern Mushroom Forest wreck, Sparse Reef wreck |
| Degasi Seabase | Jellyshroom Cave Degasi Seabase (scan the intact station) |
The practical route, in difficulty order:
- Crag Field seabed — nearest safe shallow source; sweep the seafloor and you'll usually complete 1–2 fragments without a vehicle.
- Northwestern Mushroom Forest wreck — the safest wreck option; the forest has no serious predators and the fragments are easy to spot.
- Sparse Reef seabed + wreck — a little further southwest, still low-threat; the wreck also holds databoxes worth grabbing.
- Grassy Plateaus wreck — technically the closest to spawn, but fragments inside it sit near sandshark patrols; fine with a Seamoth, annoying on foot.
- Bulb Zone / Mountains wrecks — skip unless you're already there; both are hostile (Bonesharks, Warpers, Reaper territory in the Mountains).
The Modification Station itself costs 1 diamond, but you typically need a Laser Cutter (2 diamonds) to reach the wreck fragments — and the Laser Cutter is crafted at the regular Fabricator. So the order is: Jellyshroom Cave or Mushroom Forest diamond run → Laser Cutter → wreck sweep → Modification Station. See our Subnautica diamonds guide for the farm routes.
Build Recipe and Placement
The station is built with the Habitat Builder as an Interior Module, placed inside a Multipurpose Room, Corridor or any interior space — and inside the Cyclops:
| Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Computer Chip | 1 |
| Titanium | 1 |
| Diamond | 1 |
| Lead | 1 |
The recipe above matches the rendered official wiki recipe (Computer Chip, Titanium, Diamond, Lead). Note that some community crafting references list Titanium ×2 with no Lead — recipes have shifted across updates, so trust the in-game PDA if it disagrees with anything printed here.
Per the official Subnautica Wiki: "The Modification Station is an Appliance that can be placed inside the Cyclops or inside a Seabase module. The Modification Station can upgrade tools, equipment and vehicle modules."
The Modification Station is an energy-consuming appliance, so it works in any base with power (solar, thermal, bioreactor, nuclear) and in the Cyclops. In a base, it doesn't need a dedicated room — one Multipurpose Room can hold the Fabricator, Mod Station and a locker wall comfortably.
Every Upgrade It Crafts
The Modification Station's whole purpose is upgrades, and the wiki's list is the definitive one — personal equipment plus the MK2/MK3 vehicle depth modules:
Personal equipment:
| Upgrade | Recipe | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Thermoblade | Survival Knife + Battery | Doubles as a heat source, cooks fish instantly, extra damage |
| Lightweight High Capacity Tank | High Capacity O₂ Tank + Plasteel Ingot + Glass | The best O₂-per-weight tank for long cave dives |
| Ultra High Capacity Tank | High Capacity O₂ Tank + Lithium + Glass | Maximum oxygen, heavy — the Lost River tank |
| Ultra Glide Fins | Fins + Lithium + Silicone Rubber | Frees the inventory slots the Seaglide would use |
| Swim Charge Fins | Fins + Wiring Kit + Polyaniline | Recharges your tools while you swim — genuinely useful |
| Repulsion Cannon | Propulsion Cannon + Magnetite + Computer Chip | The mid-game crowd-control tool |
Vehicle depth modules (the headline feature):
| Upgrade | Unlocks |
|---|---|
| Seamoth Depth Module MK2 | 300m → 500m |
| Seamoth Depth Module MK3 | 500m → 900m |
| Prawn Suit Depth Module MK2 | 900m → 1,300m |
| Cyclops Depth Module MK2 | 900m → 1,300m |
| Cyclops Depth Module MK3 | 1,300m → 1,700m |
Every depth module MK2 and above is crafted here — including the Cyclops MK2 (1,300m) that lets you explore the deepest Lost River corridors and the Prawn MK2 you need before the Lava Zones. If you skip the Modification Station, your depth progression hard-stops at 900m, which is exactly where the Lost River gets interesting. Build it before you go deep, not after.
Mod Station vs Vehicle Upgrade Console vs Cyclops Fabricator
Three machines look similar and confuse every new player. Here's the split:
| Machine | Crafts | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Modification Station | Personal upgrades + vehicle depth MK2/MK3 | Seabase or Cyclops |
| Vehicle Upgrade Console | Vehicle modules MK1, arms, sonar, torpedoes, perimeter defense | Inside a Moonpool |
| Cyclops Upgrade Fabricator | Cyclops-specific modules (shield, fire suppression, decoy tube, engine efficiency) | Inside the Cyclops engine room |
The clean way to remember it: MK1 vehicle depth = Moonpool/VUC, MK2/MK3 = Modification Station. You'll eventually want both machines — the VUC handles the base vehicle loadout, the Mod Station handles the deep-end gear, and the Cyclops fabricator handles the sub itself, as covered in our Subnautica Cyclops guide.
The Cyclops Loadout Trick
Because the Modification Station fits inside the Cyclops, the classic deep-expedition build is: Cyclops (with upgrade fabricator) + Modification Station + Fabricator + Power Cell Charger. That combination means you can craft, upgrade and charge entirely mid-run — no trip home to swap depth modules between the Seamoth and Prawn. It costs one interior slot and a little energy, and it turns the Cyclops into the self-contained mobile base the game advertises. The diamond for the station is a one-time cost you'll have paid off on the first deep run.
FAQ
Where do I find the Modification Station blueprint in Subnautica?
Scan 3 fragments found on the seabed in the Crag Field, Mushroom Forest and Sparse Reef, in wrecks in those biomes plus the Bulb Zone, Grassy Plateaus, Mountains and Northwestern Mushroom Forest, or at the Jellyshroom Cave Degasi Seabase.
What does the Modification Station craft in Subnautica?
Personal upgrades (Thermoblade, Lightweight/Ultra High Capacity Tanks, Ultra Glide Fins, Swim Charge Fins, Repulsion Cannon) and all vehicle depth modules MK2 and MK3 for the Seamoth, Prawn Suit and Cyclops.
What is the recipe for the Modification Station?
1 Computer Chip, 1 Titanium, 1 Diamond and 1 Lead, built with the Habitat Builder as an interior module. (Some community guides list Titanium ×2 with no Lead — recipes changed across patches; the in-game PDA is authoritative.)
Can the Modification Station be built in the Cyclops?
Yes — it's an interior module, so it fits in any base room or inside the Cyclops. Combined with a Fabricator and Power Cell Charger, it makes the Cyclops a fully self-sufficient mobile base.
How is the Modification Station different from the Vehicle Upgrade Console?
The Vehicle Upgrade Console (in the Moonpool) crafts vehicle modules MK1 and arms/sonar; the Modification Station crafts personal gear and all vehicle depth modules MK2/MK3. You need both, plus the Cyclops Upgrade Fabricator for Cyclops-specific modules.
