A Pass the Fear walkthrough: the full run from camp to final boss, five chapters and hidden stages, pacing the 12-hour clock, and reaching the ending.
Pass the Fear Walkthrough & Run Guide — From Camp to Final Boss
This walkthrough takes you through a complete Pass the Fear run, phase by phase: the camp preparation that decides your run, the chapter-by-chapter route through the island, the pacing decisions the 12-hour clock forces, the hidden stages, and what actually has to happen to reach an ending. It is written for players who have a few runs behind them and want to turn "survive" into "escape." For the absolute basics — controls, hub functions, what carries over on death — start with the how to play guide.

Phase 1: Camp Preparation (Decides Your Run)
The run is decided in the hub before the first shot is fired. In order of importance:
- Hunter — the roster is seven hunters with different kits; most are locked behind early-stage progress. See the characters guide.
- Difficulty and scars — six tiers from Journey to Reality; pick the tier whose boon/curse math your build can handle, then choose (and since Update 8.5, reroll) your Chaos Battle Scars. The difficulty guide has the full table.
- Squad Points — spend Soul Shards on permanent stats. These cannot be respec'd; the standard order is health → armor → move speed.
- Skill tree — re-spec for the run you are planning. Free to respec, so tailor it to your intended weapon family (rapid-fire skills for multishot weapons, cooldown skills for explosives).
Per the official Steam store page: "Every time your build comes together, it turns into a wildly satisfying run you will not want to put down."
In co-op, this is also the only window for players to join — the session locks when the run launches.
Phase 2: The Chapters — Route and Pacing
The full release has five chapters (the demo's 2.5 plus 2.5 new) plus hidden stages. The official launch announcement describes the handoff and what comes after:
Per the official launch announcement: "After defeating Scholar Raven at the Air Harbor, the squad stepped into the Upper Residences — a land overrun by chaos and monsters, where madness hangs thick in the air. We prepared plenty of complete chapters and formidable new Bosses for you."
Pacing rules that carry through every chapter:
- Kill what you need, grab what fits, keep moving. The 12-hour clock is a pacing governor — over-farming a chapter is how runs die on higher difficulties. (Community-observed; the exact clock math is not officially published.)
- Dismantle and forge between fights. The Forge is the difference between a strong run and a dead one. Convert junk into upgrades every chance you get — the weapons guide covers the recycle loop.
- Take the mid-boss / elite offers when you are strong. Early-mid runs should prioritize clear speed; later runs should take the elite rooms for loot density.
The chapter structure beyond the names above is not officially documented in detail — chapter names and zone lists are community-documented and still being consolidated as of mid-August 2026.
On Hard and above, the runs that die in chapter 4 are the ones that farmed chapter 3 for "one more relic." Set a mental budget: clear the rooms you need, hit the shop, and push to the boss gate.
Phase 3: Hidden Stages and the Secret Realm
The full release added hidden stages beyond the five chapters, and the official patch notes name the endgame area explicitly:
Per the official Update 7.30 letter: "As players spend more time with the game, unlock higher difficulties, obtain stronger Relics, and reach the Secret Realm, more and more 'absurd' builds have started to appear."
The Secret Realm is where the extreme builds the developers talk about actually live — and, per that same letter, it is also where the performance pressure peaked (stuttering, freezes, crashes) before the 7.28-8.x optimization patches. Community documentation also references an "Act 6" monster-rush section in later patch notes, suggesting the chapter list has grown post-launch. Exact entry conditions for the hidden stages and the Secret Realm are not officially published — treat them as discovery content.
Phase 4: The Boss Gates and the Ending
Each chapter ends in a boss (the confirmed roster is in the bosses guide). Bosses are:
- The primary Soul Shard source.
- The difficulty-unlock gate: clearing Hard unlocks Nightmare, Hell and Reality since patch 7.26.
- In Reality, the trigger for the Pearl choice (inventory accessible via TAB since 7.26).
Reaching the ending: one ending ("the squad forms and escapes") is currently documented, with a final-boss choice described in launch playthroughs — a crystal shard left behind that you can destroy or leave, with multiple endings implied ("No One Survives" is one documented outcome label). Whether hidden ending conditions exist beyond the documented ones is unverified — the community's time-loop reading of the story fragments is speculation, not developer-confirmed canon. See the story guide for the full lore breakdown.
Phase 5: Results, Death, and What Carries Over
- Death ends the run (solo), but meta progress carries over: Squad Points, skill tree levels, Team Talents, and permanent unlocks.
- The results screen shows your run stats; Update 8.6 even fixed characters holding weapons backward on the results screen.
- Higher tiers expand the loot pool — Red-rarity and Mythic items only exist on the tiers where they drop, so "failure" on Nightmare banks account progress that Journey clears cannot (see the progression guide).
Treat every wipe as a loot run: the account progress, unlocks, and pool expansion you banked are the reason the next run is stronger. This is the roguelite contract, and Pass the Fear leans into it hard.
FAQ
How many chapters are in Pass the Fear?
Five chapters at full release (the demo's 2.5 plus 2.5 new) plus hidden stages, with later patch notes referencing an "Act 6" monster-rush section. The Secret Realm is the endgame area named in official patch notes.
How do you beat Pass the Fear?
Prepare at camp (hunter, difficulty, Squad Points, skill tree), pace the chapters against the 12-hour clock, dismantle and forge between fights, clear the chapter bosses, and reach the final encounter. Clearing on Hard also unlocks Nightmare, Hell and Reality at once.
What is the Secret Realm?
The endgame area named in official patch notes where extreme builds are tested — and where performance pressure peaked before the optimization patches. Exact entry conditions are not officially published.
What should I do between chapters?
Dismantle junk and feed the Forge, spend at shops, re-check your affix chains, and in Reality difficulty handle the post-boss Pearl choice. Co-op groups should re-allocate traded relics here.
How long is a full run?
No official figure exists. Community-observed runs on Common sit roughly in the 1.5-3 hour range depending on build strength and how much you farm — treat this as an estimate until official data or a how-long community census confirms it.
