Halo Campaign Evolved Walkthrough — Full Story and Ending Explained
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a ground-up remake of Halo: Combat Evolved's 10-mission campaign plus three new prequel missions (Operation: METEORITE) — 13 missions total. This is the walkthrough hub: the campaign structure and order, the story in full (including spoilers — you're here for them), how the METEORITE prequel slots into the timeline, the ending and its secret, and mission-by-mission highlights pointing at the detailed pages.
For full mission guides see missions 1-3, missions 4-7, missions 8-10 and the Operation METEORITE guide. Collectibles live in the skulls and terminals pages.

Campaign Structure & Order
The ten classic missions play in the original order. Operation: METEORITE sits in a separate menu as "bonus missions," available from the start and playable in any order — though the story reads best in sequence. The full missions guide has the master table.
Suggested play order for first-timers: the ten classic missions, then METEORITE. The prequel was written to enrich the main story — meeting Johnson again after knowing how he dies in the Flood missions hits harder if you've already seen it.
Normal is the intended first-run difficulty. Heroic is the "classic Halo" experience and the setting most veterans recommend; Legendary is brutal and gates the Living Legend and MYTHIC (LASO) achievements. You can change difficulty between missions freely, and nothing is locked to a difficulty except the Catch skull (Heroic+).
Story Recap: Alpha Halo & the Flood
The year is 2552. Humanity is losing a war against the Covenant, an alliance of alien species united by religious zeal to find and destroy humanity. The UNSC ship Pillar of Autumn, fleeing the glassing of Reach, carries the supersoldier Master Chief and the AI Cortana. They perform a desperate slipspace jump that deposits them at an uncharted star system — where they find Installation 04, a colossal ringworld built by a long-dead civilization called the Forerunners.
The Covenant follows, boards the Autumn, and the ship is shot down onto the ring. Chief and Cortana survive the crash landing and rally the surviving Marines. Their goals evolve through the campaign:
- Survive and link up (The Pillar of Autumn, Halo) — rescue Marines, secure the ring, find survivors.
- Rescue Captain Keyes (The Truth and Reconciliation) — the Autumn's captain is captured by the Covenant and taken aboard their cruiser.
- Find the map room (The Silent Cartographer) — Cortana locates the ring's map room and learns the Covenant are searching for something called "the Control Room."
- Reach the Control Room (Assault on the Control Room) — Chief activates the ring's systems, and Cortana learns the truth: Halo is a weapon. Its full activation will destroy all sentient life in the galaxy. It is not a paradise — it is a monument to genocide, built by the Forerunners to starve a parasitic enemy.
- The Flood (343 Guilty Spark, The Library) — the ring's true purpose becomes horrifyingly clear when Chief finds the Flood: an ancient, reanimating parasite that the Forerunners built Halo to contain. The Covenant, the UNSC and the Flood are now all on the ring together, and Guilty Spark (the ring's monitor) enlists Chief to retrieve the Index and activate Halo — not knowing, or not caring, that doing so would kill everyone in the galaxy.
- Betrayal and descent (Two Betrayals, Keyes) — Guilty Spark's plan unravels. Chief and Cortana realize Halo must never fire. They race to stop the activation, find Keyes consumed by the Flood, and prepare to destroy the ring instead.
- The escape (The Maw) — with the ring's reactor set to detonate, Chief and Cortana flee the Autumn's wreckage in a Warthog run that ends with the ring exploding behind them as they escape aboard a captured ship. Installation 04 is destroyed. The story of Halo is, literally, born.
Characters that matter: Cortana (the AI who drives the plot), Captain Keyes (captured, then consumed), Sgt. Avery Johnson (the Marine who keeps showing up — and whose backstory the prequel fills in), and 343 Guilty Spark (the unsettlingly cheerful ring monitor). The terminals add Forerunner and ONI context to all of it (terminals guide).
The METEORITE Prequel Timeline
Operation: METEORITE is set in 2551, one year before the events of Combat Evolved. Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson lead a covert UNSC strike aboard the Triumph of Tolerance, a Covenant agricultural research ship in orbit over the glassed human colony of Promise. The mission: extract Covenant navigation data that could point to the Covenant homeworld, High Charity.
Across three missions — Boarding Action, The Most Dangerous Game and Heavy Burden — Chief and Johnson (joined by ODST Lieutenant Williams and Tiger Company) uncover the ship's real cargo: the Minister of Harmony's genetic experiments, and evidence that links the Covenant leadership to something far more important than agriculture. The arc ends with a Seraph dogfight and the data safely in UNSC hands — data that Dr. Halsey confirms includes High Charity's location. The operation is overshadowed a year later by the Fall of Reach, but it is canonically the first time Chief and Johnson fight side-by-side, and it retroactively deepens every Johnson scene in the main campaign.
The full breakdown — including what new weapons, enemies and lore the arc introduces — is in the Operation METEORITE guide.

Ending Explained
The finale plays out in The Maw. Chief overloads the Pillar of Autumn's engines, boards a Covenant ship with Cortana, and escapes as Installation 04 detonates. The ring — and with it, the Flood — is destroyed. The post-credits scene sets up the entire franchise: a fragment of the Flood survives aboard Chief's escape vessel, and a voice declares the parasite is "unscarred" and "a monument to all your sins" — the Gravemind, the Flood's intelligence, who will return in Halo 2 and beyond.
The Legendary secret ending: completing the campaign on Legendary shows the same scene with an addition — the Flood fragment is shown in clearer detail, and the Gravemind's dialogue is slightly extended, underscoring that the Flood's survival is deliberate, not accidental. It's a small difference from Normal/Heroic, but it's the canonical bridge into Halo 2's story.
Campaign Evolved keeps the 2001 ending beat-for-beat, including the post-credits Gravemind scene. What's new is the METEORITE arc's lore around it, not the finale itself. If you remember CE's ending, you know exactly how this ends — it's everything before the ending that's been expanded.
Mission-by-Mission Highlights
- The Pillar of Autumn — the tutorial-infused escape sequence; introduces sprint, ADS and the new weapon feel. Watch for the three skulls in the first ten minutes (skulls-1).
- Halo — the ring reveal remains one of gaming's great "wow" moments; the three lifeboat rescues teach the game's open-combat flow.
- The Truth and Reconciliation — the first big stealth-ish infiltration; the ship interior is where you first notice the remake's audio and lighting overhaul.
- The Silent Cartographer — the iconic island drop; the remake's improved wayfinding shines here.
- Assault on the Control Room — Scorpion tank sections, snow valleys, and the IWHBYD skull's famous jump (skulls-2).
- 343 Guilty Spark — the tonal pivot: forests turn to horror, and the Flood reveal lands harder with the new lighting.
- The Library — still the game's longest, most relentless gauntlet; co-op recommended (see the co-op guide).
- Two Betrayals — the reverse-route snow missions with Banshee sections and the Flood/Covenant three-way fights.
- Keyes — the Flood-consumed cruiser; home of the hardest skull in the game (Catch, Heroic+ timed run).
- The Maw — the Warthog escape run, now with a co-op fireteam crammed into the four-seater (vehicles guide).

FAQ
What is the story of Halo: Campaign Evolved? The same story as Halo: Combat Evolved: Master Chief and Cortana crash-land on Installation 04, fight the Covenant, discover the ring is a Forerunner weapon built to starve the Flood, and destroy it rather than let it fire. The remake adds Operation: METEORITE, a 2551 prequel with Sgt. Johnson.
How does Halo: Campaign Evolved end? Chief overloads the Autumn's engines and escapes as Installation 04 explodes. The post-credits scene shows a Flood fragment surviving aboard the escape ship and the Gravemind declaring the parasite "a monument to all your sins" — the direct setup for Halo 2.
Is there a secret ending in Halo: Campaign Evolved? Yes — a Legendary-only extension of the post-credits Gravemind scene. Beat the campaign on Legendary to see it.
What order do you play the Halo: Campaign Evolved missions? The ten classic missions in order (Pillar of Autumn through The Maw), then the three Operation: METEORITE missions (Boarding Action, The Most Dangerous Game, Heavy Burden) which sit in a separate bonus-missions menu.
Is Halo: Campaign Evolved a full remake? Yes — a ground-up Unreal Engine 5 remake with new cinematics, audio, character models and levels, not a re-skin. See the main guide for the full changes list.
