The complete Halo: Campaign Evolved guide: what the UE5 remake of Combat Evolved is, all 13 missions, 42 skulls, and whether it's worth it in 2026.
Halo Campaign Evolved Guide — Every Mission, Skull and Feature Explained
Halo: Campaign Evolved is Halo Studios' ground-up Unreal Engine 5 remake of Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), released July 28, 2026 on PC, Xbox Series X|S and — for the first time in the franchise's history — PlayStation 5. It rebuilds all ten original missions, adds a three-mission prequel arc called Operation: METEORITE, and layers on 42 collectible Skulls, a remix mode, and 4-player crossplay co-op. It is a campaign game only: there is no competitive multiplayer.
This guide is the hub for everything: what the game actually is, how it differs from the 2001 original, the full mission list, the collectible systems, co-op, platforms and editions, and a straight answer on whether the $49.99 asking price is worth it.

What Is Halo: Campaign Evolved
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a full remake, not a remaster. Where the 2011 Anniversary edition merely re-skinned the original geometry, Campaign Evolved was rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5: new character models, new cinematics, re-recorded dialogue from the primary cast, a remastered soundtrack, and modernized controls that add sprint and aim-down-sights (both toggleable if you want the classic feel).
The core story is untouched: Master Chief crash-lands on a mysterious ringworld, fights the Covenant alongside Cortana, and uncovers Halo's terrible secret. What changed is everything around it — a bigger arsenal, new vehicles and mechanics, and an entirely new story arc.

What's New vs the 2001 Original
If you last played Halo: Combat Evolved on the original Xbox, here is exactly what changed:
- Three new prequel missions (Operation: METEORITE) — Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson on a covert mission one year before the events of CE, aboard a Covenant agricultural research ship in orbit over the glassed colony of Promise. See the Operation METEORITE guide for the full story.
- Nine additional weapons from across the series, including the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle and Needle Rifle — the first time the Energy Sword is usable by the player in this campaign. Full breakdown in the weapons guide.
- Vehicle hijacking and a drivable Wraith — you can now steal Ghosts, Banshees and Wraiths mid-fight, and the Wraith is fully driveable for the first time in a CE campaign. The Warthog also grew to four seats, so an entire co-op squad fits in one. See the vehicles guide.
- Sprint and ADS — modern movement and aiming, with options to disable both for purists.
- Skulls and Terminals as collectibles — the original CE had no skulls in its campaign and no lore terminals; Campaign Evolved hides three skulls and one terminal in every mission.
- Campaign Remix mode — a built-in randomizer that re-mixes enemy factions, weapons and visibility. Covered in the Campaign Remix guide.
- 4-player online co-op with crossplay and cross-progression — the original was 2-player split-screen only. See the co-op and crossplay guide.
One change fans have noticed immediately: several missions were lightly trimmed to keep the pace moving, and the developers added better wayfinding so you rarely get lost. The Library is still The Library, but checkpoint density and level flow are noticeably more forgiving than 2001.
How It Actually Plays: Combat & Systems
If you've only ever seen Halo from the outside, the pitch is simple: it's a first-person shooter where every fight is a small tactical puzzle. Campaign Evolved keeps that identity and modernizes the furniture around it:
- Sprint and ADS are new — the original CE had neither. Both are toggleable in settings, and a chunk of the community plays with sprint off for the classic feel, but the modern controls make the remake far more approachable for new players. The beginners guide covers the first-hour adjustments.
- The shield loop is the game. Your shields recharge, your health doesn't. The entire combat loop is: engage until shields break, break line of sight, recharge, re-engage. Enemy types reinforce it — Grunts panic, Elites duel, Hunters demand heavy weapons, and the Flood swarm.
- The sandbox grew. 17 weapons (9 new), 6 vehicles including a drivable Wraith, and vehicle hijacking for the first time in this campaign — the weapons and vehicles guides rank everything.
- Difficulty is a content gate, not a flavor. Easy through Legendary change enemy damage and behavior, and specific content sits at higher tiers — the Catch skull needs Heroic+, and Legendary unlocks achievements and the secret ending. The walkthrough explains the tiers.
The MA5B assault rifle is genuinely good now. Veterans of 2001 remember a pea-shooter; the remake rebalanced it into the reliable workhorse it was always meant to be. It changes early-game tactics more than any other single tweak.
The 2011 Anniversary edition re-textured the original game. Campaign Evolved rebuilds it — new cinematics, new audio, new character models, new level geometry. It is closer to Capcom's Resident Evil remakes than to an HD remaster, and it replaces Anniversary as the definitive way to play CE.
All 13 Missions at a Glance
The campaign splits into two halves: the ten classic missions in their original order, then the three Operation: METEORITE prequel missions, which sit in a separate menu and can be played at any time.
| # | Mission | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Pillar of Autumn | Escape the doomed ship; the tutorial-infused opener |
| 2 | Halo | First look at the ring; three lifeboat rescues |
| 3 | The Truth and Reconciliation | Infiltrate the Covenant cruiser to rescue Keyes |
| 4 | The Silent Cartographer | Iconic island drop; find the map room |
| 5 | Assault on the Control Room | Scorpion tank sections and snow-covered valleys |
| 6 | 343 Guilty Spark | The Flood reveal; the tonal turning point |
| 7 | The Library | The infamous gauntlet; sentinel escort |
| 8 | Two Betrayals | Reverse route through the snow, plus Banshee flying |
| 9 | Keyes | The Flood-infested cruiser; the hardest skull in the game |
| 10 | The Maw | Warthog escape run; the legendary final drive |
| 11 | Boarding Action (METEORITE) | Board the Triumph of Tolerance with Johnson |
| 12 | The Most Dangerous Game (METEORITE) | Hunt-dome arenas; the Temperamental skull puzzle |
| 13 | Heavy Burden (METEORITE) | Bridge assault and space combat finale |
The missions guide has the full table with per-mission collectibles and rough playtimes, and the walkthrough covers the story, timeline and ending in detail.
Play the ten classic missions first, then treat Operation: METEORITE as a bonus arc. The prequel is best saved until you know the main campaign — it was written to enrich what you already saw, not to introduce it.
Skulls, Terminals & Campaign Remix Explained
Collectibles are the backbone of the replayability pitch:
- 42 Skulls total, 39 findable — three hidden in every one of the 13 missions. Each skull is a gameplay modifier you can toggle on when starting a mission: Bandana gives infinite ammo, Acrophobia lets you fly by holding jump, Catch makes enemies throw grenades everywhere, and the fan-favorite IWHBYD ("I Would Have Been Your Daddy") unlocks rare dialogue lines. Skulls whisper/hiss when you're near them, which is the only way to find them without a guide. Full coverage in the skulls overview and the per-mission pages (missions 1-4, missions 5-8, missions 9-13).
- 13 Terminals — one per mission, glowing consoles that unlock text lore logs readable from the main menu. The terminals guide has every location and what the logs reveal.
- Campaign Remix — collect any three skulls and the mode unlocks, along with three bonus skulls (Adaptation, Reload, Armistice) that are always active in remix runs. Remix randomizes enemy factions and weapon placement, and rolls one of two visibility effects: Spore Visibility (Floodified fog) or Nightvision (always-on green night vision). Full details in the Campaign Remix guide.

Co-op & Crossplay
Campaign Evolved is built around co-op, not competition:
- 4-player online co-op across PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5, with full crossplay and cross-progression through a linked Microsoft account.
- 2-player split-screen on Xbox and PS5 consoles (not on PC).
- No competitive multiplayer — no PvP, no Firefight. The campaign and its remix mode are the entire game.
- Co-op unlocks (missions, rally points, skulls, terminals) are shared permanently with everyone in the fireteam.
You do need a Microsoft account on every platform — on PS5 the game walks you through a one-time QR-code link between PSN and Xbox accounts, and on Steam the game requires a linked Xbox Network account to play. See the co-op and crossplay guide for invites, progression and the split-screen rules.
Platforms & Editions
The game is on everything relevant, with a few platform-specific caveats:
- PC (Steam / Microsoft Store) — Windows only; no native Mac or Linux build. The PC launch was rocky: stuttering, crashes and sign-in complaints drove the Steam rating to Mixed (61% of ~8,900 reviews at the time of writing). A day-one patch improved stability. Official specs in the system requirements guide.
- Xbox Series X|S — the best-reviewed version (Metacritic ~84-86), with Xbox Play Anywhere for digital purchases.
- PS5 / PS5 Pro — the historic first PlayStation release; PS5 Pro reviews are strong, while the base PS5 build shows occasional frame dips in busy sections. Physical PS5 copies require a ~40GB download, and the game needs an active Microsoft-account link.
Three editions were offered: Standard ($49.99), Premium ($69.99) with five days of early access plus armor and weapon skins, artbook and a digital short story, and the Collector's Edition ($199.99) with physical collectibles — which sold out within a day of pre-orders opening. The Premium upgrade is $20 for Standard owners. Everything is broken down in the editions guide.
Game Pass: included day one with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass (base version only). If you subscribe on Xbox or PC, the Premium upgrade is the only extra you might want. See the Game Pass guide.
Halo Games in Order
If Campaign Evolved is your first Halo, here is how it fits the series:
- Release order: Halo: Combat Evolved (2001) → Halo 2 (2004) → Halo 3 (2007) → Halo 3: ODST (2009) → Halo: Reach (2010) → Halo 4 (2012) → Halo 5: Guardians (2015) → Halo Infinite (2021).
- Timeline order: Halo: Reach (2552, prequel) → Combat Evolved / Campaign Evolved (2552) → Halo 2 → Halo 3 → Halo 3: ODST → Halo 4 → Halo 5 → Halo Infinite.
- Operation: METEORITE slots in before CE's main story — it is set in 2551, a year before the Pillar of Autumn arrives at Installation 04, and it sets up why Johnson is so important to Chief later.
The Master Chief Collection (MCC) contains CE through Halo 4, ODST and Reach with all their multiplayer content — but Campaign Evolved is the only way to play the CE story with the new prequel missions and modern co-op. For a newcomer, playing Campaign Evolved first is a perfectly good on-ramp; the story stands alone.
Performance & PC Specs
Halo Studios published four official PC spec tiers, all targeting 60 FPS: Low (1080p), Medium (1440p), High (4K, the "recommended" tier) and Ultra (4K max). The minimum floor is a Ryzen 5 3600 / i7-10700K with an RTX 2060 Super, RX 6600 or Arc A580, 16GB RAM and 100GB of SSD space; the recommended tier jumps to a Ryzen 7 7700 / i7-12700K with an RTX 3080 Ti or RX 9070 and 32GB RAM. The PC version supports DLSS 4, FSR, XeSS and TSR upscaling, uncapped framerates, and Reflex/Anti-Lag latency features.
Real-world performance has been a sore spot. Independent benchmarks (Overclock3D) found the game largely avoids UE5 shader-compilation hitches but is demanding, with ~90-100 FPS at 1440p Ultra on an RTX 5090 without upscaling. On the console side, Xbox Series X holds the best frame pacing, PS5 Pro is strong, and base PS5 dips in dense sections. The full tier tables and optimization tips are in the system requirements guide.
The Steam launch was genuinely rough — Mixed reviews, reports of stuttering and crashes, and a mandatory Xbox Network sign-in even on Steam. The July 29 patch improved stability and Halo Studios published a known-issues list, but if your machine sits near the minimum specs, expect to spend time in the settings menu (see the system requirements guide).
Is Halo: Campaign Evolved Worth It?
The short answer: yes on console, with caveats on PC — and the long answer lives in the review.
- Metacritic: PC 77, PS5 ~81, Xbox Series X ~84-86 (scores were still settling in the first weeks). OpenCritic: 83 with 88% of critics recommending.
- Steam: Mixed (61% positive) — driven overwhelmingly by technical complaints, not the game itself.
- What critics praise: the faithfulness of the remake, the UE5 presentation, the remastered audio and voice work, the three new missions ("bonus missions that feel like they've always been there"), and the co-op/remix systems.
- What critics criticize: the price point for a remake, PC stability at launch, the mandatory Microsoft account, no competitive multiplayer, and base-PS5 performance dips.
- Playtime: roughly 8 hours for the main story, 12 with extras, and 25-30 hours for full completion including Legendary, LASO and all collectibles. See the how-long-to-beat guide.
If you have Game Pass, there is no reason not to try it. If you are on PS5, it is the historic chance to play the game that defined the Xbox brand — and the remake is good enough to deserve the hype. If you are on PC and your rig is older, check the system requirements guide before committing.
Updates & Post-Launch Support
Halo: Campaign Evolved shipped with a rough first week and has been patched since:
- July 29, 2026 — first patch: stability and performance improvements across platforms, enemy AI adjustments, AMD FSR stability fixes (drivers 26.6.2/26.6.4), a crash fix for The Maw's opening cinematic, Pillar of Autumn stability, and GPU driver warnings at launch. The patch reset mid-mission saved progress (missions and rally points were preserved).
- Known issues (official): cinematic stutter on refresh rates that aren't multiples of 30Hz, audio popping in The Truth and Reconciliation, a suspend-during-cinematic bug, Steam .exe launch quirks, keybind resets, and Intel 13th/14th-gen microcode crashes. The system requirements guide collects the workarounds.
- No roadmap: as of mid-August 2026 there's no announced content roadmap — no DLC, no campaign expansion, no competitive multiplayer plans. The prequel missions are the content; Remix is the replayability. Treat "future content" as speculative until Halo Studios says otherwise.
- Mods: no official mod tools or Workshop support. Community mods exist (mostly visual tweaks — dynamic lighting, time-of-day effects), but they're unofficial experiments. See the FAQ below.
