Walkthrough and combat tips for the first three Halo: Campaign Evolved missions — Pillar of Autumn, Halo and Truth and Reconciliation: key battles and loadouts.
Halo Campaign Evolved Missions 1-3 Walkthrough — Pillar of Autumn, Halo, Truth and Reconciliation
The opening third of Halo: Campaign Evolved re-introduces the ring with three missions that are structurally identical to 2001 but feel different in practice: sprint and ADS change the flow, the MA5B is more effective than veterans remember, and improved wayfinding removes most of the "where do I go?" friction of the original.
Official source: Steam store page — the ten original missions "remade with high-def visuals, updated cinematics, and refined level design."
This walkthrough covers the key battles, the loadouts that work, and where each mission's collectibles sit. The next stretch is on the missions-2 page.

The Pillar of Autumn — Walkthrough
Mission length: ~30-40 min · Collectibles: Speed Limit, Magnified, Perspective + Approach terminal
The escape-the-ship opener doubles as the tutorial. Key beats:
- Cryo room: grab the Speed Limit skull on the catwalk before leaving (it's behind you). From here you learn the new sprint — the remake's movement feels noticeably faster than 2001.
- Corridors to the bridge: the marine escort sections teach the basics (covers, shields, reload timing). Grab Magnified on the armory lockers en route.
- Bridge: after the Keyes/Cortana cutscene, drop below the pilots for Perspective, then fight toward the escape pods.
- Lifeboat section: the timed run to the escape pod is the only pressure point — stay moving, let the Marines draw fire, and use the new melee to clear Jackals quickly.
The remake rebalanced the assault rifle: it's the reliable workhorse it was always meant to be, not the pea-shooter of 2001. On Normal, AR + Magnum is a valid loadout for the whole mission. The Magnum still wins the "precision" slot for Elites — two headshots drop shields, then a melee finishes them.
Halo — Walkthrough
Mission length: ~45-60 min · Collectibles: Give & Take, Grunt Funeral, Floor Is Lava + Forgotten terminal
The ring reveal, then three lifeboat rescues across an open landscape. The remake's improved sightlines and wayfinding make this the best early showcase of the new visuals.
- Warthog section: after rescuing the first Marines you get the Warthog. The underground tunnel holds the Forgotten terminal (stop at the window, hop out). The four-seat Warthog now carries your whole fireteam — see the vehicles guide for the new seating layout.
- Lifeboat 1 (left, cliff): Grunt Funeral is here — grenade jump up the spire, or fly with Acrophobia if you already have it.
- Lifeboat 2 (central river): Give & Take sits in the river cave — grab it on the way through.
- Lifeboat 3 (right, rockslide): Floor Is Lava is on the rock formation above.
- The final beach fight: Covenant reinforcements pour in while you wait for extraction. Use the rocket launcher on the Wraith, and let the Marines hold the line.
You can't collect every skull on a first blind run — Grunt Funeral's grenade jump (or Acrophobia flight) is the first real platforming skill test. If you don't have Acrophobia yet, mark this skull and return via Chapter Select later.
The Truth and Reconciliation — Walkthrough
Mission length: ~45-60 min · Collectibles: Iron, Endurance Spec, Foreign + Inquisitor terminal
The first big set piece: assault a Covenant cruiser to rescue Captain Keyes. This mission has the game's first real difficulty spike on Heroic+, because the tight corridors force close-quarters fights with Elites.
- Approach & grav lift: clear the landing zone, then grab Iron off the cliff by the lift (drop down, then die/reload to return).
- Ship interior: the vehicle bay room holds Endurance Spec (the column jumps — Acrophobia trivializes this one). Watch for the audio-popping bug on this level that Halo Studios lists in its known issues.
- Hangar: Foreign is behind the timed locked door — wait for Covenant to spawn, rush in, grab it, leave before the door closes.
- Prison block: grab the Inquisitor terminal before rescuing Keyes — the mission ends right after.
- Keyes rescue & escape: the extraction fight with the double Hunters is the hardest moment. Plasma pistol overcharge + Magnum headshots drops Elites fast; keep the shotgun for the Hunters' backplates.
Charged Plasma Pistol + Magnum headshot is the single most efficient way to kill an Elite on Heroic and Legendary in this remake, just as it was in 2001. The Plasma Pistol's EMP effect is unchanged — strip the shield, then one Magnum round to the helmet.
Loadouts That Work
- AR + Magnum (default): reliable everywhere on Normal.
- Plasma Pistol + Magnum: the Elite-killer combo for Heroic+.
- Shotgun: mandatory once the Flood arrive in mission 6, but useful now for Hunters.
- Rocket Launcher: save it for vehicles — the Wraith on Halo and the double Hunters on T&R are its best uses here.
The new weapons — Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, Needle Rifle — start appearing from mission 5 onward; the weapons guide ranks them and notes where they drop.
Difficulty Notes
- Normal: a comfortable tour; the remake's sprint makes T&R notably easier than 2001.
- Heroic: the classic Halo experience; Elites demand the plasma/Magnum combo.
- Legendary: T&R is the first real wall — corridor discipline, cover snapping and never pushing without recharged shields. See the LASO guide for the hard-mode mindset.
All three missions support 4-player co-op with crossplay. T&R's corridors are much more forgiving with a squad — see the co-op and crossplay guide for how fireteam progression and invites work.
FAQ
How do you beat the Truth and Reconciliation in Halo: Campaign Evolved? Clear the landing zone, fight through the cruiser with the plasma-pistol/Magnum combo for Elites, grab the Inquisitor terminal before the Keyes rescue, and use the shotgun or rocket launcher on the final Hunters during extraction.
What is the best loadout for the early Halo: Campaign Evolved missions? AR + Magnum on Normal; Plasma Pistol + Magnum for Elites on Heroic+; add the Shotgun for Hunter fights and the Rocket Launcher for vehicles.
Where do you get the Warthog in the Halo mission? After rescuing the first Marine squad, follow the objective into the underground tunnel — the Warthog is parked there, and it now seats four.
Where is the Iron skull? In The Truth and Reconciliation, just before the gravity lift — look over the cliff edge by the small tree to spot it on a ledge below.
