Halo: Campaign Evolved LASO explained: what LASO is, the official skull challenge, how to unlock it, survival tips, and the MYTHIC achievement reward.
Halo Campaign Evolved LASO — Legendary + All Skulls, Survived
LASO stands for Legendary, All Skulls On — the brutal Halo tradition of playing the campaign on Legendary difficulty with a curated loadout of difficulty skulls active. In Halo: Campaign Evolved, LASO is an official game mode with its own unlock condition and its own achievement: MYTHIC (50G, Gold) — "Complete the Campaign with LASO enabled."
Unlike previous Halo games, Campaign Evolved's LASO does not require all 42 skulls — many skulls in this remake make the game easier. Instead, a curated selection of 17 skulls must be found to unlock the official LASO difficulty, and LASO uses a fixed difficulty loadout of the classic hard-mode skulls. This guide covers the unlock, the loadout, and how to actually survive it.

What Is LASO
The rules, as confirmed by Halo Studios' official materials and the community (Halopedia documentation included):
- Play on Legendary difficulty.
- A fixed set of difficulty skulls is enabled (the classic roster: Iron, Tough Luck, Catch, Fog, Famine, Thunderstorm, Tilt, Mythic, Black Eye, Blind, Cowbell, Grunt Birthday Party and the rest of the hard-mode set).
- Iron is the run-definer: dying while solo restarts the entire mission from the beginning. Co-op softens this (death resets to checkpoint instead), which is why co-op LASO is the community's recommended path.
- Completing the campaign under these rules pops MYTHIC (50G Gold) — one of the game's two gold achievements, the other being Collector's Addition.
Official source: Halopedia — Skulls (CEV) — "A specifically-curated selection of 17 skulls must be found in order to unlock the game's official LASO difficulty. Despite the name, Campaign Evolved's iteration of LASO does not require all 42 skulls to be enabled as unlike prior games many skulls now make the game easier."
How to Unlock LASO
- Collect the curated 17 skulls — the classic hard-mode set (Iron, Tough Luck, Catch, Fog, Famine, Thunderstorm, Tilt, Mythic, Black Eye, Blind, Cowbell, Grunt Birthday Party, Angry, That's Just... Wrong, Foreign, Ghost, Recession — the exact list per Halo Studios' design). All are among the 39 collectible skulls; routes are on the skulls pages.
- Once the 17 are collected, LASO appears as a difficulty option in the mission-select screen.
- Start a campaign (or individual missions) with LASO selected — the fixed skull loadout applies automatically.
Do not attempt LASO before you have the 17 skulls — and don't try to "pre-farm" the loadout manually; the mode applies its own curated set. The achievements guide's 100% route has LASO as the final step, which is the right order.
The LASO Skull Loadout & What It Does
The official LASO set is the classic difficulty stack (this is the fixed mode loadout):
- Iron — solo death restarts the mission (the big one)
- Tough Luck — enemies always berserk, dive constantly, never flee
- Catch — enemies throw and drop more grenades
- Fog — motion tracker disabled
- Famine — enemy-dropped weapons have half ammo
- Thunderstorm — enemy ranks upgraded
- Tilt — damage multipliers amplified
- Mythic — enemies have more health
- Black Eye — shields only recharge via melee
- Blind — HUD and weapons invisible
- Cowbell — physics chaos (explosions throw everything)
- Grunt Birthday Party — headshot confetti (pure flavor)
The combo that makes LASO LASO: no radar, no HUD, no ammo, enemies everywhere, tankier and angrier, and one death = restart. It's the hardest challenge the game offers.
With Blind and Fog active you have no HUD, no weapons visible and no motion tracker. Your aim is muscle memory; your ammo count is guesswork. Spend a few missions learning to play "blind" before committing to the full LASO run — it's the skill most LASO failures come from.
Mission-by-Mission LASO Tips
- The Pillar of Autumn / Halo: easy by LASO standards — the open arenas give you room to recharge (via melee, thanks to Black Eye). Use the environment: cover, distance, and let Marines tank.
- Truth and Reconciliation: the first wall — tight corridors with Elites. The plasma-pistol/Magnum combo is mandatory; never push a corner without a charged pistol ready.
- Silent Cartographer: the two-Hunter fights are the danger. Use the rocket/fuel rod from range; Hunters with Thunderstorm+Tilt upgrades two-shot you.
- Assault on the Control Room: the Scorpion is your best friend — it's the one part of LASO that's easier than the 2001 original because vehicles can't be one-shot by your own mistakes... until the Flood arrive.
- 343 Guilty Spark / The Library: the Flood gauntlet. Shotgun + melee recharge (Black Eye turns melee into healing), keep moving, and accept that The Library will take hours.
- Two Betrayals: the three-way wars are a blessing — let Covenant and Flood fight; finish the survivor. Banshee sections are the most dangerous vehicle moments.
- Keyes: the Flood cruiser with Catch active is grenade hell. Take it slowly; every corner is a dice roll.
- The Maw: the Warthog run with Thunderstorm ranks is brutal — keep the Hog moving, and don't stop for anything.
On solo LASO, one death sends you back to the mission start. There is no checkpoint mercy. The reliable strategy is the opposite of speedrunning: slow, methodical, cover-based progress, never advance without recharged shields, and treat every encounter as if it's the last thing you'll do this hour.
Co-op LASO vs Solo
- Co-op LASO is dramatically easier: with Iron, dying in co-op resets to the last checkpoint instead of restarting the mission (the skull's description literally says so). One player can also hang back to keep the fireteam alive.
- Solo LASO is the ultimate bragging-rights run — and the way purists do it.
- Either way, the MYTHIC achievement pops the same. If you're doing it for the achievement (not the glory), do it in co-op: 4 players, crossplay, and one player designated to survive. See the co-op guide.
In co-op LASO, have the best player stay at the back and let the others trade deaths. Since co-op Iron resets to checkpoint (not mission start), the back-line player keeps the run alive through the whole mission.
Rewards
- MYTHIC (50G, Gold) — complete the campaign with LASO enabled. One of only two gold achievements.
- Bragging rights and the completionist capstone — LASO is the last item in the achievements guide's 100% route.
- No in-game cosmetic or unlockable — LASO is purely challenge. The reward is the achievement and the story you'll tell.
FAQ
What is LASO in Halo: Campaign Evolved? Legendary + All Skulls On — the campaign on Legendary with a curated fixed skull loadout (Iron, Tough Luck, Catch, Fog, Famine, Thunderstorm, Tilt, Mythic, Black Eye, Blind, Cowbell, Grunt Birthday Party and more). Solo death restarts the mission.
How do you unlock LASO in Halo: Campaign Evolved? Collect the curated 17 difficulty skulls from the 39 collectible ones; LASO then appears as a difficulty option. It does not require all 42 skulls.
What skulls does LASO use in Halo: Campaign Evolved? The classic hard-mode set — Iron, Tough Luck, Catch, Fog, Famine, Thunderstorm, Tilt, Mythic, Black Eye, Blind, Cowbell, Grunt Birthday Party and the rest of the curated 17.
Is LASO easier in co-op? Yes — with Iron active, co-op death resets to the last checkpoint instead of restarting the mission. The MYTHIC achievement pops identically, so co-op is the smart path.
What's the reward for LASO? The MYTHIC gold achievement (50G) and the completionist capstone — no in-game unlockables beyond it.
