Halo: Campaign Evolved Co-op & Crossplay Guide

Halo: Campaign Evolved co-op and crossplay: 4-player online co-op across PC, Xbox and PS5, cross-progression via Microsoft account, and console split-screen.

Halo Campaign Evolved Coop & Crossplay — Everything You Need to Know

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a campaign game by design — the "multiplayer" is 4-player online co-op, and it's crossplay across everything. Up to 4 players can play the campaign together on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5 in any mix, with full cross-progression through a linked Microsoft account. On consoles there's also 2-player split-screen. What there is not: no competitive PvP multiplayer, no Firefight, no arena — the campaign and its remix mode are the entire game.

This guide covers the exact rules: how many players, how crossplay and cross-progression work, split-screen limitations, how to invite friends, and the account linking you'll have to do before anything works.

Co-op Explained (4-Player Online)

  • Up to 4 players online, playing the full campaign including Operation: METEORITE and Campaign Remix.
  • Crossplay: PC (Steam or Microsoft Store), Xbox Series X|S and PS5 players can all join the same fireteam.
  • Cross-progression: campaign progress, collectibles and achievements sync across platforms via your linked Microsoft account. Larger unlocks (missions, rally points, skulls, terminals) carry over; fine-grained mid-mission checkpoints do not sync.
  • Shared unlocks in co-op: when a fireteam plays together, skulls and terminals collected during the session are granted permanently to every player in the fireteam, even if they joined late.
  • Host rules: the Fireteam Leader's progress determines which missions and rally points the fireteam can access. If the leader leaves or disconnects, the session ends.

Crossplay & Cross-Progression

The glue is the Microsoft account. Every platform requires one:

  • On Steam: the game requires a linked Xbox Network account to play at all (it's listed on the store page as a third-party account requirement).
  • On PS5: the first launch walks you through a one-time QR-code link between your PSN and Microsoft accounts. The link is permanent and cross-saves ride on it.
  • On Xbox: you already have the account.

Once linked, missions completed on one platform unlock on the others, skulls/terminals sync, and achievements follow you. The practical upshot: you can play a mission on PS5 in the afternoon and continue that exact save on PC at night.

Account linking is mandatory

On PS5 and Steam you cannot play Halo: Campaign Evolved without a Microsoft account link — even offline play requires the initial linking step to have been completed. It's a common source of day-one frustration, but it's a one-time setup, and the platforms guide covers it per platform.

Split-Screen on Console

  • 2-player split-screen co-op is available on Xbox Series X|S and PS5 consoles.
  • Not on PC — split-screen is console-only.
  • Both players must be signed in (Xbox account or PSN account) — guest accounts are not supported.
  • Player 2 gets limited settings (controls, accessibility) but cannot change graphics mode or armor/weapon customization; set customization as the primary player first.
  • No Game Pass or PlayStation Plus required for local split-screen. If a split-screen session extends to 3-4 players over the network (multiple consoles/PCs), subscription requirements apply (Game Pass/PS+ depending on platform and home-console settings).
Couch co-op impressions

Community testing (Couch Coop, etc.) found split-screen runs well in both graphics modes on base PS5, with only minor dips in busy vehicle sections — impressive for UE5. Tethering is a thing: wander too far and you'll be pulled back to your partner.

How to Invite Friends

  • Two friend lists exist: Platform friends (native friends — Steam, PlayStation, Xbox) and Cross-platform friends (Xbox Gamertags, used whenever players are on different platforms).
  • For cross-platform play, all participants must be friends on the Xbox network (add via the Xbox mobile app, Game Bar, or Xbox.com).
  • Invites are sent from the friends tab; on Steam and PlayStation, players must be on the main menu to receive in-game invites.
  • Direct joining: you can join a friend who is on the main menu from either friend list.
  • If invites fail: check that the linked Xbox account is set to appear online (an offline Xbox presence blocks Steam/PS invites).
Networking quality follows the host

Overall connection quality in co-op is determined by the Fireteam Leader's internet. Have the player with the fastest, most stable connection host, and keep the fireteam on one region if possible.

No Competitive Multiplayer

There is no PvP multiplayer in Halo: Campaign Evolved — no arena, no social playlists, no Firefight, nothing competitive. The campaign, its co-op, and Campaign Remix (the randomizer mode) are the entire package. This is a deliberate design choice (the game is a campaign remake, not a platform), but it's also the most common criticism in reviews — see the review guide for how reviewers weighed it.

Don't buy this expecting PvP

If you're looking for competitive Halo multiplayer, this isn't it — that lives in the Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite. Campaign Evolved is strictly campaign + co-op + remix.
