Avatar State Aang Avatar Legends Guide: Unlock, Moves & Strategy

Avatar State Aang is the second locked character in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game — the all-elements, spirit-boosted version of Aang who plays as a pure projectile zoner instead of Aang's mobile rushdown. He flies with Harmonic Drift, controls every screen position with elemental projectiles, and pays for that power with the second-lowest health pool in the game (875). Community tier lists place him in A-tier — strong, but a "boss-style" character that demands real zoning discipline. This guide covers both unlock methods, how he differs from base Aang, his moveset (Unbound, Float, Harmonic Drift, Avatar's Ascension), his supports, combos, and the honest verdict on him vs. regular Aang.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • Both unlock methods: Chapter 11-1 and the ATLA cheat code
  • The "Nirvana" achievement and unlock chain
  • How Avatar State Aang differs from base Aang (zoner vs rushdown)
  • His moveset: Avatar's Ascension, Fire Fist, Unbound, Harmonic Drift
  • His supports: Katara, Roku and Guru Pathik
  • Combos and zoning strategy — and the 875-health risk

How to Unlock Avatar State Aang

Avatar State Aang (listed in-game as "Avatar Aang") is one of two locked fighters; the other is Nightmare Korra. The normal unlock:

  1. Play the story mode to Chapter 11-1 "The Inner Battle."
  2. In that chapter you play as Avatar State Aang in the Spirit World against your regular self.
  3. Win and he's unlocked permanently, plus the "Nirvana" achievement. Unlocking both hidden fighters awards "Here Comes a New Challenger!"

The fight is genuinely hard — you won't have had time to learn his zoning kit, and the TheGamer guide recommends a simple cheese: forward Heavy is a very reliable projectile — keep distance and spam it.

The cheat code (instant unlock): from the main menu, select Arcade → Training → Local VS → Arcade in quick succession (the "ATLA" mnemonic; touchpad on PS5, minus on Switch, Enter/Backspace on PC). A sound cue confirms it — both hidden characters unlock at once. Confirmed by the IGN wiki.

Avatar State Aang vs Aang: What's Different?

Base Aang is the rushdown trickster — forward-Flow hops with three follow-ups, glider attacks from awkward angles, wind-based movement and mixups. Avatar State Aang is a completely different character with his own moveset (the community data and the unlock guides agree on this):

Aang Avatar State Aang
Archetype Rushdown, movement mixups Pure projectile zoner
Element focus Air All four elements (projectiles)
Health ~1000 875
Signature move Air Scooter Avatar's Ascension (flight)
Difficulty Tricky execution Advanced (zoning discipline, Flow management)

He "occupies a separate slot: a boss-style character, endowed with all elements and powerful Chakra Arts," per the roster analysis — extremely versatile at every range, but an advanced fighter because his options are so numerous and his health is so low.

Avatar State Aang Moves: Ascension, Fire Fist, Harmonic Drift

  • Avatar's Ascension — his tweaked Air Scooter: flight that lets him combo into elemental attacks — a rock volley, a fireball that shoots up and comes back down, and a water grab attack. This is his mobility and his combo engine.
  • Fire Fist — a strong projectile; combined with the Avatar's Wrath finisher for Ascension, his projectile game covers most of the screen.
  • Command normal projectiles — "his command normal projectiles control powerful angles and cancel into Flow moves on contact."
  • Float — hold up in the air to float; costs no Flow. He can hover indefinitely and reposition.
  • Unbound — an install that activates whenever he makes contact (hit or block) and persists until he whiffs a normal. During Unbound he can Flow-cancel his big tools: Avatar's Wrath (236XA), Finishing Strike (236XAC), Avatar's Judgement (236XC), Quaking Strike/Earthshatter (214XA) and Tornado Shot/Skyrift (214XB).
  • Harmonic Drift — his signature property: on his backwards Flow moves, 236X and 214X~C, he controls his momentum in all eight directions while the move is active. This is how he flies around the opponent's spacing.
  • Specials as stances — his specials are stances with controlling follow-ups, giving him "unmatched power at far and middle ranges."

Official source: per TheGamer's unlock guide, "Avatar State Aang's biggest advantage is his tweaked Air Scooter, now called Avatar's Ascension, which can be used to fly around and even combo into other elemental attacks" — the launch-window description of his kit.

Best Avatar State Aang Supports

Each support improves one element of his palette (per SuperCombo's Avatar Aang page):

Support Effect
Katara Water moves surge into ice (encasing hits) and grant a small heal (50% less if guarded) — a resource that patches his 875 health.
Roku Fire moves surge with a long follow-up window; fire moves that hit the ground become a blanket of fire dealing damage over time — zoning damage on top of zoning.
Guru Pathik Harmonic Drift gains increased mobility; while Unbound, Earthshatter and Skyrift become Flow-cancelable.

Katara support is the standout for most players: a self-heal on a 875-health zoner is enormous, and the ice surge locks opponents down for confirms. Roku is the damage-zoning pick; Pathik is for players who want max movement freedom. Full support context is on the roster guide and the elements guide.

Avatar State Aang Combos and Strategy

Numpad notation; A/B/C = Light/Medium/Heavy, F = Flow, SUP = A+B+C. Per the combos guide:

Zone-and-confirm route:

Fire Fist (projectile) > Float forward > j.B > 5B > 214X (stance) > 236 SUP

Establish the projectile wall, float in behind it, and confirm off far hits — SuperCombo highlights "good confirms off of far hits" as one of his strengths.

Unbound combo extension (his damage ceiling):

236X (Avatar's Wrath) > Unbound active > Flow cancel > 5A > 5B > 214X~A (Earthshatter) > 236X~A~C (Finishing Strike) > 236 SUP

Once Unbound is active (you hit or blocked), his big tools become Flow-cancelable — that's how his "long, flashy, and damaging combos" work. The frame data guide explains the cancel windows.

Zoning discipline checklist:

  • Keep projectiles at different heights (he can attack "nearly any position on the screen")
  • Use Float (free) to reposition instead of spending Flow
  • Save Flow for Harmonic Drift escapes — he "explodes if you get hit" with 875 health
  • Chip with grounded fire (Roku support) to close rounds
Predictable zoning = death

SuperCombo's own overview warns: "a poorly placed projectile can be easily Flowed for a massive punish," and "you die if you're too predictable." His kit is committal — every projectile is a commitment — and his Flow-hungry movement means a drained gauge shrinks his defensive options drastically.

Is Avatar State Aang Better Than Aang?

The community verdict mirrors the Nightmare Korra situation: not a straight upgrade. TheGamer: "the original version is a better character overall, and certainly one that's easier to come to terms with in the early hours of the game." Reasons:

  • 875 health vs Aang's ~1000 — he dies fast when caught.
  • Flow-hungry and committal — his defense gets worse as the gauge depletes.
  • Predictable — "the majority of his kit requires commitment to perform."
  • Base Aang's rushdown gives him a simpler, safer gameplan for most players.

Tier-wise he lands A-tier (Pocket Tactics puts him in B, allthings.how in A) — strong zoning and huge damage potential, but boss-style characters are matchup and execution dependent. If you love zoners (Katara mains, this is your Aang), he's excellent; if you want the flexible, forgiving Aang, the base Aang guide is the pick. Frequently Asked Questions

How do you unlock Avatar State Aang in Avatar Legends?

Play Story Mode to Chapter 11-1 "The Inner Battle" and win (you play as Avatar State Aang in the Spirit World). That unlocks him permanently plus the "Nirvana" achievement. The cheat code (Arcade → Training → Local VS → Arcade on the main menu) also unlocks him instantly.

Is Avatar State Aang better than Aang?

Not a straight upgrade. His zoning and damage ceiling are higher, but he has 875 health (second-lowest in the game), a committal kit, and Flow-hungry defense. Base Aang is more forgiving and generally rated better for most players.

How does Avatar State Aang fight in Avatar Legends?

As a pure projectile zoner: all four elements as projectiles, Avatar's Ascension flight, Float (free hover), Harmonic Drift 8-way momentum, and stance-based specials. He controls every screen position but pays with low health and commitment.

What are Avatar State Aang's best supports?

Katara (water surge = ice + small self-heal) is the standout for patching his 875 health. Roku (fire surge = damage-over-time fire blankets) is the damage-zoning pick. Guru Pathik (more Harmonic Drift mobility, Unbound cancels) is for max movement.

How much health does Avatar State Aang have?

875 — the second-lowest health pool in the game (only Nightmare Korra's 850 is lower). His zoning is his defense; getting caught is expensive.
