Ozai guide for Avatar Legends — the Boost mechanic, fireball and command grab moveset, supports (Sozin, Imperial Firebender, Zhao) and combos.
Ozai Avatar Legends Guide: Fire Lord Moves, Combos & Strategy
Fire Lord Ozai is the launch roster's commanding presence character — a Fire Nation tyrant who threatens huge damage with every exchange, powered by a unique Boost mechanic that turns his Flow gauge into a temporary flight-and-pressure install. He's also the game's only true "three characters in one" pick: his supports (Firelord Sozin, Imperial Firebender, General Zhao) don't tweak his kit — they replace large chunks of it, giving him speed-fighter, all-rounder and grappler identities respectively. Community tier lists place him solidly in the A/B range, and his Flow-hungry gameplan makes him a character you either click with or don't. This guide covers Boost, his moveset, the three supports, combos, and the story-mode boss fight everyone asks about.

Here's what you'll learn:
- How Boost works and why everything revolves around it
- His full moveset: counter, fireballs, lariat, lightning and the command grab
- The three supports and the three very different Ozais they create
- Combos and pressure routes
- How to beat the overpowered Ozai boss in story mode
- Whether he's worth picking up in the current meta

Ozai's Boost: The Core Mechanic
Boost is Ozai's entire gameplan. When he activates it (a Flow input), he consumes one bar of his Flow gauge — the falling orange meter drains gradually — and for the duration of the install he can:
- Use Flow movement techniques freely, without further Flow cost
- Boost his normals, specials, and even his level-7 super into powered-up versions
- Move during the startup and recovery of boosted moves (his boosted 5B lets him slide in and out during the move)
The SuperCombo community work describes Boost as "the entire cornerstone of Ozai's kit" — everything he does, regardless of support, revolves around it. The cost is that he must always commit a bar of Flow to press his best buttons, which makes meter management his real difficulty: run dry and you're Unbalanced, stripped of the very tools your character is built around.
His Flow Reversals are mediocre, his counter (Royal Retribution) has a small active window and loses to lows, and his boosted options are his best buttons. An Unbalanced Ozai is a slow firebender with no pressure. Never Boost into a situation you can't win the exchange in.
Ozai Moves: Fireballs, Grabs and Flight
- Royal Retribution (236A) — a counter special: if the opponent's attack connects during its window, Ozai grabs them. Catches mids and highs; official command list says it loses to lows (community testing found it currently counters lows too — verify in Training; flagged as possibly changing).
- Dragon Slayer (236B) — his projectile. With Imperial Firebender or Zhao support it can be charged (45 frames on Imperial Firebender, 60 on Zhao) into the community-nicknamed "Genocide Cutter": a massive 45-degree projectile with ceiling splat that unlocks his highest-damage routes. Sozin support loses the charge entirely.
- Imperial Rush (236C) — his lariat/Psycho Crusher-style special, a combo ender that side-swaps on hit and can cancel into supers. Boostable.
- Phoenix King's Lightning (236XX) — an EX-only lightning strike (2 Chakra). The first hit is blockable, but the follow-up is unblockable, and you can delay it by holding an attack button to bait reactions. Air version strikes downward. This is the show's "lightning from the fingertips" moment, and it's as scary as it looks.
- Rift Breaker (214X) — his command grab, 180 base damage, knockdown advantage +22~+54. Available with Imperial Firebender and Zhao supports (Sozin loses it). Zhao's version is the monster: boosted, it can reach up to 320 damage.
- Tyrant's Shot (j.236A) — an air fireball he can reposition around with Air Boost; Majestic Lash (j.236B) — an overhead air special that double-overheads off j.B.
- Supers: Royal Eruption (ground, 4 Chakra, pillar of fire), Air Royal Eruption (air version, gives a Hard Knockdown and leaves him airborne for wakeup mixups), and Wrath of the Phoenix King (7 Chakra True Chakra Art — a steerable, boostable firestorm that OTGs and that you can combo after).
- Frame data highlights (SuperCombo measurements; in-game display shows True Startup one frame less): 5A 7f/-4, 5AA 7f/-3, 5B 10f high, boosted 5B 12f with absurd disjoint and chip, 2C 14f low (KD +36 on hit, -8 on block), j.2C 13f overhead, ground throw 7f, air throw 3f. See the frame data guide for the table.
Best Ozai Supports: Sozin, Imperial Firebender or Zhao?
Ozai's supports are the most dramatic in the game — each is effectively a different character:
| Support | Health | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Firelord Sozin | 900 | Full 8-way air dash, jump-cancel boosted B/C on hit. Loses 214X (command grab) and charged 236B. The speed/setplay Ozai — fly around and clip from everywhere. |
| Imperial Firebender | 1000 | Better Flow Reversal (extra deflection hit), keeps 214X command grab, 236B charges in 45 frames, jump-cancel boosted 5B. The balanced Ozai — everything, slightly toned down. |
| General Zhao | 1100 | Massive-range command grab that can be Boosted into the air for 180–320 damage, air command grab (j.214X) with huge anti-air hitbox, EX grab with guard point. Loses the air super; airdash only goes upward. The grappler Ozai. |
Which is "best" is a playstyle question. The community shorthand: Sozin = speed demon, Imperial Firebender = jack of all trades, Zhao = grappler. Launch-tier discussions generally treat Imperial Firebender as the most consistent, Sozin as the highest-ceiling, and Zhao as the meme-with-a-kill-button (that boosted grab is genuinely terrifying). Learning all three is the real Ozai main's job — he's explicitly designed as a counterpicking character.
Ozai Combos and Mixups
Numpad notation; A/B/C = Light/Medium/Heavy, F = Flow, SUP = A+B+C. Per the combos guide:
Universal BnB (any support):
5A > 5AA > 5B > 236C (Imperial Rush) > cancel into 236ABC (Royal Eruption)
His standard magic series into lariat into super — the lariat's side-swap on hit keeps the corner yours.
Boost pressure route (Imperial Firebender):
Boost > 5B (boosted, chip + disjoint) > 5C (boosted, Element Surge launch) > 236B (charged) > ceiling splat > 214X or super
Boosted 5B is considered one of the best buttons in the game — massive disjoint, chip damage, and it chains into boosted 5C's launch.
Grappler route (Zhao):
Block a whiff > 214X (Rift Breaker) > Boost up > Boost down (damage scaling) > OTG with j.236XX or 214ABC
The boosted grab does 180–320 damage; on an Unbalanced opponent it gets even scarier. This is why Zhao Ozai can end rounds off one read.
Zuko matchup tech: Ozai's critical hit Imperial Brand — landing it on Zuko drains 50% of Zuko's Flow gauge and gives Zuko +4 Redemption; if it sends Zuko Unbalanced, Ozai gets a Critical Throw. It's a famously brutal matchup interaction (and a fun callout to the Agni Kai).
Story Mode Ozai Boss: How to Beat Him
The story mode throws a superpowered Ozai at you twice — the version that flies, spams fireballs, grapples for massive damage, and has armor that ignores Light attacks. You fight him in:
- Chapter 13-1 "The Titanic Duel" (as Kyoshi)
- Chapter 21-3 "Loser Lord" (as Sokka)
Both fights require beating him twice. The universal cheese, per TheGamer and community guides: Light attacks bounce off his armor, but Heavy attacks hit and stun him normally. So:
- As Kyoshi: spam her charged Backwards Heavy — it covers huge range, deals big damage, and stunlocks him from outside his grab range. You can drain both health bars without him ever acting.
- As Sokka: use his neutral heavy (the swing that knocks Ozai away) as your main damage, keep distance to avoid the grab, and add charged light boomerangs when there's space. Do not use Super Duper Slash — Ozai counters it almost every time.
The story mode guide has the full chapter context.
Is Ozai Good in the Current Meta?
Launch consensus puts Ozai in the A/B range — solid, threatening, but below the Azula/Korra/Toph/Katara top group. Pocket Tactics puts him in B; Operation Sports calls him "great in the right hands (as many Grappler Ozai players can attest)" with the caveat of a high barrier to entry; allthings.how calls him "a genuine heavy-hitter rather than a liability." His Flow-hungry design and unfinished-feeling movelist (the SuperCombo page notes multiple command-list contradictions on the launch build) keep him from the top tier, but a well-played Imperial Firebender or Zhao Ozai is one of the scariest pressure characters in the game. If you like characters who reward aggressive meter management, he's the character guides index pick for you — and the launch-window patch (1.01, August 6) has already started cleaning him up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Ozai good in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game?
Solidly mid-high tier (A/B in launch roundups). His Boost pressure and command grab are excellent, but his Flow-hungry gameplan and launch-build rough edges keep him below the S-tier group. In the right hands — especially Zhao grappler Ozai — he's a genuine threat.
How does Ozai's Boost mechanic work?
Activating Boost consumes one bar of Flow and grants a temporary install: free Flow movement, boosted normals/specials/super, and movement during boosted moves. Everything he does revolves around it, and running out of Flow (Unbalanced) cripples him.
Which Ozai support is best — Sozin, Imperial Firebender or Zhao?
Imperial Firebender is the most consistent all-rounder (1000 HP, command grab, charged fireball). Sozin (900 HP) is the speed/setplay option with an 8-way airdash. Zhao (1100 HP) is the grappler with a 320-damage boosted command grab.
How do you beat the Ozai boss in story mode?
Use Heavy attacks — his armor ignores Lights. As Kyoshi, spam the charged Backwards Heavy to stunlock him; as Sokka, use neutral heavy plus charged boomerangs and never use Super Duper Slash. You face him at Chapter 13-1 (Kyoshi) and 21-3 (Sokka), twice each.
Is Ozai a grappler in Avatar Legends?
With the General Zhao support, yes — massive command grab (Rift Breaker), air grab, EX grab, 1100 HP. With Sozin he's a speed character, and with Imperial Firebender he's an all-rounder with a standard command grab.
