| Nightmare Korra | Dark Avatar, dark spirits | The Legend of Korra | Unlockable (Story ch. 6) |
Per the official Steam store page: "Choose from 12 playable characters and go head-to-head across a variety of modes and features."
Every character is hand-drawn with 900+ animation frames each — the art team even redrew hundreds of Zuko's frames so his scar never appears on the wrong side of his face (per the developers' roster dev diary).
How to Unlock Avatar State Aang and Nightmare Korra
Both secret fighters unlock through Story Mode:
| Character | Unlock condition |
|---|---|
| Nightmare Korra | Complete Chapter 6: "A Cold Welcome" (mission 6-1) |
| Avatar State Aang | Complete Chapter 11: "The Inner Battle" (mission 11-1) |
Instant cheat code: from the main menu, highlight Arcade and press View (Xbox) / Backspace (keyboard) / Touchpad (PlayStation), then Training, then Local VS, then Arcade again — the sequence spells ATLA and unlocks both instantly. Full details in the story mode guide.
"A Cold Welcome" and "The Inner Battle" are the campaign's showcase fights for these two characters — you'll learn their mechanics in the process. The cheat code skips the tutorial you didn't know you needed.
Character Guides: In-Depth Breakdowns
Our full character guides cover movesets, combos, supports and matchups:
- Aang Guide — Moves, Combos & Airbender Strategy — glider mobility, air scooter pressure, Avatar State comeback mechanics
- Zaheer Guide — Moves, Combos & Red Lotus Strategy — free flight, active assists, the roster's deepest combo routes
More character guides (Katara, Zuko, Toph, Sokka, Azula, Kyoshi, Ozai, Korra, Avatar State Aang, Nightmare Korra) are being added as the meta develops. For strength rankings across the whole cast, see the tier list.
Support Characters for Every Fighter
Each main fighter picks one of three supports before the match, and supports genuinely reshape how a character plays (the developer's "Support 101" tutorial walks through this). The full launch support roster:
| Main fighter | Support options |
|---|---|
| Aang | Gyatso, Appa, Momo |
| Korra | Naga, Raava, Tonraq |
| Zuko | Mai, June, Ran & Shaw |
| Katara | Kanna, Master Pakku, Hakoda |
| Toph | The Boulder, Badgermole, The Hippo |
| Sokka | Suki, Piandao, Yue |
| Azula | Lo and Li, Joo Dee, Ursa |
| Kyoshi | Rangi, Kelsang, Yun |
| Zaheer | P'Li, Ming Hua, Ghazan (active assists) |
| Ozai | Fire Lord Sozin, Admiral Zhao, Imperial Firebender |
| Avatar State Aang | Katara, Avatar Roku, Guru Pathik |
| Nightmare Korra | Vaatu, Dark Spirit, Dark Avatar Unalaq |
Support effects range from stat-style buffs (better projectiles, faster movement) to kit-changing mechanics — Azula's Ursa support lets her start in Fire Lord stance instead of Focused, and Sokka's Piandao support literally grants sword levels. Zaheer is the outlier: his Red Lotus supports are active combat assists rather than buffs.
Which Character Should You Start With?
Launch-window community consensus (see the tier list for rankings):
- Beginner-friendly: Katara (graceful, powerful, forgiving routes), Korra (headstrong all-element pressure), Aang if you like movement — his scooter/glider kit is deep but his execution floor is lower than it looks.
- Intermediate: Zuko (dive-kick monster with a redemption mechanic), Toph (armored control), Azula (stance mastery rewards patience).
- Lab monsters (high ceiling, high floor): Zaheer — flight plus three active assists is the roster's biggest execution wall — and Avatar State Aang / Nightmare Korra once you unlock them.
- Sokka is the wildcard: no bending chain at all, but boomerang vortex pressure has already earned a cult following among high-level players.
The strongest character is the one you'll actually practice. Pick a fighter whose personality you enjoy — every launch character is tournament-viable, and the first month's patches (plus the upcoming ranked update) will shift the meta anyway. See the how to play guide for the fundamentals before you commit.
Year 1 DLC Characters
The roster grows to 18 by the end of Year 1: Iroh, Ty Lee, Lin Beifong, Bolin and a fan-vote fifth (Tenzin, Kuvira, Amon, King Bumi or Asami Sato) via the Year 1 Pass, plus Tagah as a free character in Fall 2026. Full pricing, release order and vote details are in the DLC guide.
