Subnautica Below Zero Ice Worm guide: where the 95 m leviathans spawn in the Glacial Basin and Arctic Spires, how they attack, and the Thumper counter.
Ice Worm Subnautica — Where They Live and How to Survive Them
The Ice Worm is Below Zero's apex land predator: a 95-meter leviathan-class ambush hunter that tunnels beneath the ice of the Glacial Basin and Arctic Spires, senses you by the vibrations of your footsteps and machinery, and cannot be killed or even scanned alive — it has no hitbox at all. You counter it with Thumpers, which broadcast a steady noise that keeps the worms buried, and the game makes you learn this the hard way because both the Glacial Basin and the Arctic Spires are mandatory story areas. This guide covers every confirmed spawn zone, the full attack and behavior breakdown, the Thumper strategy, and what actually works on the Snowfox.
Here's what you'll learn:
- Where Ice Worms actually live (and where the official sources disagree)
- Exactly how they attack and what each hit does to you
- The Thumper mechanic — recipe, placement and battery life
- Whether the Snowfox helps or hurts, and if the anti-worm module works
- The story role that forces you through their territory twice

What Is the Ice Worm?
The Ice Worm is an aggressive, leviathan-class fauna species that spends its entire life underground. Its body is a long segmented tube: a thick, backwards-spiked exoskeleton on top, an unprotected grey underside with rows of parapodia for gripping ice, and a head dominated by one huge plate that tapers into a super-heated horn. Per its databank entry, the horn's inner chambers hold raw alkali metals that react violently with water — an exothermic reaction that lets the worm melt through dense ice shelves "with minimal resistance."
Per the official Subnautica Wiki — Ice Worm: "The Ice Worm is an aggressive leviathan class fauna species that tunnels beneath the surface of the ice. They are ambush predators, drawn towards the vibrations produced by movement and certain machinery on the ice's surface. Ice Worms are exclusively subterranean creatures and do not swim."
Key stats from the official wiki:
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Length | 95 m |
| Attitude | Aggressive |
| Health | Invulnerable (no hitbox) |
| Horn attack | 50 damage to player, 25 to Prawn Suit |
| Swallow attack | Instant kill on player |
| Spawn biome (wiki) | Arctic Spires |
| Debug spawn ID | icewormspawner |
It's also the only known non-extinct land-based leviathan on Planet 4546B, and its design is an explicit homage to the sandworms of Dune — the "Thumper" countermeasure is named after the novel's device. Two more useful details: it's a confirmed threat in the setting's history, because AL-AN recalls "ravenous creatures, tunnelling beneath the ice," implying the species has been around for at least 1,000 years, and despite appearing partially submerged in promo art, it never swims.
Where to Find Ice Worms
The official wiki lists the Ice Worm's biome as the Arctic Spires, but in practice you will meet them in two regions, and both are mandatory story areas:
- Northern Glacial Basin — IGN's Below Zero guide states plainly that ice worms "are located in the Glacial Basin," and community map-makers have long called the north side of the basin "the worm side." You'll be here on foot (and later on the Snowfox) for the Phi Robotics / Frozen Leviathan storyline.
- Arctic Spires — the official wiki biome. The frozen plateau north of the Glacial Bay, reached via a bridge you must refuel with Hydraulic Fluid. IGN notes you'll most likely encounter the worms here "while Building Al-An's Storage Medium (Body)" — the Architect Tissues blueprint is in the Arctic Spires Cache, and the valley beside it is the Ice Worm Boneyard.
Both regions are laid out with coordinates in our Below Zero map guide.
A living Ice Worm cannot be scanned — it has no interaction hitbox. The only way to get its databank entry is to scan the Ice Worm carcass in the Ice Worm Boneyard, a valley of skeletal remains in the northeastern corner of the Arctic Spires (with the Arctic Spires Cache directly west of it). If you plan to 100% the databank, don't rush past that valley.
How Ice Worms Attack
The Ice Worm hunts by vibration. While it tunnels just below the surface it leaves a trail of pushed-up snow and a jet of steam, and it is attracted to noise and movement — footsteps, the Snowfox, and machinery all draw it in. When it breaches, it roars first, then picks an attack:
- Lunge — from a distance, it launches out of the snow at you.
- Horn poke — it stays buried and jabs upward with its super-heated horn (50 damage to you, 25 to a Prawn Suit).
- Spear & swallow — if it catches you while tunnelling, it spears you, flings you into the air, and swallows you whole. That's the instant kill.
- Whip / dive attacks — close-range variants it chains together once it enters hunt mode.
- It will also happily grab and eat a Snow Stalker that wanders too close.
Because it senses vibration, running makes things worse. The correct play is the opposite: freeze when you hear the roar, move deliberately, and use Thumpers to mask your presence.
How to Survive Ice Worms (Thumper Strategy)
The Thumper is the intended counter: a deployable device that sends high-impact sonic pulses into the ice, which prevent Ice Worms from surfacing within its radius as long as its battery lasts.
- Blueprint: from a Data Box at a tech site in the Arctic Spires — the official wiki lists two spawns at (-1337, 38, -265) and (-966, 68, -84).
- Recipe: 1 Titanium + 1 Magnetite + 1 Battery (Below Zero versions), crafted at any Fabricator.
- Battery life: roughly 5 minutes on a normal battery; swap in a fresh one with the R key.
- Use: deploy it, move through the safe radius, then deploy the next one ahead of you — the community-standard technique is a chain of Thumpers across the Arctic Spires canyon, plus a stack of First Aid Kits for the pokes that get through.
Each Thumper covers a limited radius for ~5 minutes. The standard Arctic Spires crossing is: run to the edge of the safe zone, drop the next Thumper, sprint through, repeat. Craft three or four before you enter — going back to the Fabricator mid-canyon is how players die.
Community-verified extras that work:
- The Prawn Suit is ignored by the worms — a consistent Steam community observation is that Ice Worms don't agro on you while you're in the Prawn, making it the "cheat" vehicle for crossing worm territory.
- Hover over the ice with jump jets — Reddit's guide to avoiding the Ice Worm reports worms can't detect you while you're airborne; the Snowfox's Jump Jet module turns this into a viable crossing trick.
- Thumpers attract the old dev-build worms — a trivia quirk: in an older version, Thumpers drew worms toward you instead of repelling them, the exact opposite of the intended effect.
The Snowfox: Help or Hazard?
The Snowfox hoverbike is the only land vehicle in the franchise, and the Ice Worm is basically its anti-demo: worms knock you off the Snowfox on contact (the official wiki confirms this doesn't deal direct damage to you — the danger is the follow-up attacks while you're on the ground). Two things to know:
- The Snowfox Ice Worm Attack Reduction Module (recipe 2 Titanium + 1 Wiring Kit, Data Box at a tech site in the Arctic Spires at (-1096, 61, 332)) is described by the official wiki as greatly reducing worm attacks while riding. However, a measured Steam community test (thread here) recorded only ~2 fewer encounters over 10 minutes (~6%) and concluded the module is "too weak" to rely on. Treat it as a minor QoL upgrade, not a free pass.
- Many players skip the Snowfox in the Arctic Spires entirely and walk with Thumpers instead — the community consensus is the vehicle just makes you a bigger, louder target. The Snowfox is genuinely useful for the Glacial Basin's long crossings, though.
Ice Worms in the Story
Ice Worm territory is not optional. The Glacial Basin holds the Frozen Leviathan storyline (the cure research at Phi Robotics and the basin's northern reaches), and the Arctic Spires hold the Architect Tissues blueprint for AL-AN's body — the last of the three body-part caches and the only one on land, according to IGN. So you cross worm country at least twice: once mid-game through the basin, once endgame into the spires. The worms also reinforce the worldbuilding — AL-AN's thousand-year-old memory of "ravenous creatures, tunnelling beneath the ice" is one of the few hints about how long they've ruled the surface. For how the Ice Worm stacks up against the rest of the leviathan roster (it's one of four Below Zero species, alongside the Chelicerate, Shadow Leviathan and Ventgarden), see our leviathans guide and the full size-and-attitude table in the all-leviathans guide.
FAQ
Where do Ice Worms spawn in Subnautica Below Zero?
Officially the Arctic Spires biome, but you'll also encounter them in the northern Glacial Basin. Both are mandatory story areas — the basin for the Frozen Leviathan storyline and the spires for AL-AN's body.
Can you kill an Ice Worm?
No. It has no hitbox and is invulnerable to all weapons. You can only avoid it (Thumpers, Prawn Suit, staying airborne) — the official databank assessment is "Aggressive and lethal - Avoid."
How do I get past the Ice Worms in the Arctic Spires?
Craft several Thumpers (1 Titanium + 1 Magnetite + 1 Battery, blueprint from a Data Box in the spires), chain them across the canyon, and keep First Aid Kits for the pokes. The Prawn Suit is ignored by the worms if you prefer that route.
Do Ice Worms attack the Snowfox?
They knock you off the Snowfox on contact (no direct damage), then attack you on the ground. The Ice Worm Attack Reduction Module exists but community tests suggest its effect is marginal (~6% fewer encounters).
How big is the Ice Worm?
95 meters long — the only non-extinct land-based leviathan in the franchise. Its super-heated horn melts ice via an alkali-metal/water reaction.
