Subnautica Below Zero Spiral Plant: where to find it in Deep Purple Vents and Ventgardens, how to harvest Spiral Plant Clippings, and how to grow your own.
Subnautica Below Zero Spiral Plant — Where to Find It and What It's Used For
The Spiral Plant is a Below Zero-exclusive flora that grows inside Ventgardens in the Tree Spires and across the Deep Purple Vents — two of the map's deeper, Chelicerate-patrolled zones. Knife it and each plant drops Spiral Plant Clippings (1 per slash, 2 per plant), which you can then plant in an Exterior Growbed at your base and harvest forever without ever returning to the vents. It has no crafting recipe — it's a renewable decorative flora and a mild flex, but the clippings-only-once loop is the whole point of grabbing it. This guide covers exactly where the plants spawn, how to harvest them safely, and how to grow your own supply.
Here's what you'll learn:
- The two Spiral Plant locations and how to reach them
- How harvesting works (clippings per slash, per plant)
- Planting your own clippings in an Exterior Growbed
- Whether it's worth the trip into Chelicerate territory

What Is the Spiral Plant?
Per the official Subnautica Wiki: the Spiral Plant "is a flora species that is found inside Ventgardens and the Deep Purple Vents… When knifed, it gives 1 Spiral Plant Clipping per slash. Each plant is destroyed after 2 slashes, yielding 2 clippings per plant."
It's a tall, tubular sea plant woven from thin white fibers that opens into a funnel at the top, with red leaves spiraling down the body — the spiral that gives it its name. The in-game databank frames it nicely: its "strong-but-lightweight fibrous material is useful for insulation and pressure equalization," and it lives in symbiosis with the Ventgarden, "which provides a safe environment for the spiral plant to grow. In turn, the mesh-like fibers of the plant filter out heavy metals from the vent emissions below."
The important gameplay fact: the Spiral Plant is not an ingredient in anything. It's a collectible/decorative flora — which makes it an unusual item to search for, and a common completionist stop. What you do get is renewable clippings.
Where to Find It
Two zones hold Spiral Plants, both on the deeper end of the Below Zero map (full biome details in our Below Zero map guide):
| Location | Depth | Danger level | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deep Purple Vents | 160–480m | High (Chelicerate patrols) | Plants grow near the Fossil Excavator; also the zone's magnetite/lithium runs |
| Ventgardens (Tree Spires) | 70–460m | Medium (Chelicerates outside; calm inside) | Plants grow inside the Ventgarden creatures — the safest harvest |
The Ventgarden route is the smart one. Ventgardens are huge, passive, jellyfish-like organisms in the Tree Spires; swimming inside one is safe (no aggressive fauna), and the Spiral Plants grow on the inner tissue. You get the plants, you get to study the Ventgarden up close, and you avoid most of the Chelicerate problem. The Deep Purple Vents variant is for players who are already down there doing the magnetite/lithium grind.
The Deep Purple Vents is one of Below Zero's most dangerous zones — Chelicerates patrol it heavily, and the plants near the Fossil Excavator sit right in the danger corridor. If you only want Spiral Plants, go to the Ventgardens instead. If you must harvest in the vents, use a Seatruck and don't linger.
How to Harvest (and Not Waste Plants)
Harvesting is simple but easy to get wrong:
- Equip the Survival Knife.
- Slash the plant once → 1 Spiral Plant Clipping.
- Slash again → the plant is destroyed and drops the second clipping.
- Stop there. Two clippings per plant is the maximum — a third slash would have been wasted anyway since the plant is gone.
Each plant gives exactly 2 clippings, so grab clippings from at least two plants on your first visit — that gives you 4 clippings, enough to plant a small grove and never return.
The clippings are plantable in an Exterior Growbed (per the wiki: "Spiral Plant Clippings can be planted in an Exterior Growbed. Given the difficulty of accessing them, this can save significant trouble after harvesting the first sample"). Two plants = 4 clippings = a home grove that spawns new plants — and new plants can be re-knifed for more clippings whenever you like. One trip, permanent supply.
What to Do With It (Honest Verdict)
- Decorative flora: Spiral Plants are genuinely pretty in a growbed, and the funnel shapes stand out among Below Zero's other plants.
- Collection/completion: if you're filling the PDA flora log or want every growable species, it's one of the rarer entries — most players miss it entirely because the Ventgardens are easy to overlook.
- Not useful for crafting: no recipe uses Spiral Plant or its clippings. Do not go out of your way for it if you're mid-story — it's a "when you're already in the neighborhood" pickup.
Given that, the practical advice: grab it once during your Tree Spires exploration (which you'll do anyway for kyanite and the Marguerit storyline), plant the clippings, and tick it off the list. If you're playing co-op through the Below Zero multiplayer mod, one player harvesting and sharing clippings saves the whole group a second trip.
FAQ
Where can I find the Spiral Plant in Subnautica Below Zero?
Inside Ventgardens in the Tree Spires (safest) and across the Deep Purple Vents near the Fossil Excavator (more dangerous). Both are deep-water zones patrolled by Chelicerates outside the Ventgardens.
What is the Spiral Plant used for in Below Zero?
Nothing craftable — it's a collectible decorative flora. Its clippings can be planted in an Exterior Growbed for renewable plants. The databank frames its fibers as useful for insulation, but no recipe uses it.
How do I get Spiral Plant Clippings?
Knife the plant with the Survival Knife: 1 clipping per slash, 2 slashes destroy the plant, 2 clippings per plant total.
Can you grow Spiral Plants in Below Zero?
Yes — plant the clippings in an Exterior Growbed at your base. Two plants give 4 clippings, enough for a permanent home grove that re-grows and can be re-harvested.
Is the Spiral Plant dangerous?
No — it's passive flora. The danger is the surrounding zones: Chelicerates patrol the Deep Purple Vents and Tree Spires. Inside a Ventgarden is safe.
