Subnautica Sea Dragon Leviathan — Locations, Stats and How to Survive

The Sea Dragon is Subnautica's largest aggressive leviathan — 112 meters long, 5,000 HP, and the only creature in the game that hunts and eats Reaper Leviathans. Three of them exist: two patrol the Inactive Lava Zone (one circling the Lava Castle) and one roams the Lava Lakes near the Primary Containment Facility. Unlike the Reaper's grab-and-shake, the Sea Dragon fights at range — it spits fireballs that can start fires inside your Cyclops and deal up to 500 damage to the hull. You can't outfight it; you outdrive it.

Official resources: Steam store page · Official Subnautica Wiki — Sea Dragon Leviathan · IGN Subnautica page

Per the official Subnautica Wiki: "The Sea Dragon Leviathan is an aggressive leviathan class fauna species... The Sea Dragon Leviathan is the third largest aggressive creature in the game and the second largest overall. It is the apex predator of the Lava Zones."

Sea Dragon Stats

Stat Value
Length 112 m (367 ft)
Health 5,000
Attitude Aggressive
Damage — Bite Instant kill (player), 10–20 (Prawn)
Damage — Swat 40 (player), 11 (Prawn), 250 (Cyclops)
Damage — Fire breath 12–72 (player), 3–19 (Prawn), 500 (Cyclops)
Biomes Inactive Lava Zone, Lava Lakes
Population 3 (2 ILZ + 1 Lava Lakes)

The fire breath number is the one that matters: a direct hit on a Cyclops is 500 hull damage out of 1,500 — and the fireballs ignite onboard fires that spread if you don't suppress them. Two clean hits plus a fire can put a maxed Cyclops on the edge.

Where the Three Sea Dragons Live

All three spawns are in the Lava Zone chain — the deepest area of the game, which also means they're the last leviathans most players ever see:

Location Behavior
Inactive Lava Zone — main chamber Patrols the big cavern at ~960 m; you'll cross its path entering the zone
Inactive Lava Zone — Lava Castle Circles the rock castle containing the Alien Thermal Plant — the classic ambush point
Lava Lakes Roams the final ~1,300 m chamber around the Primary Containment Facility

They don't respawn if killed, and each one's patrol route is roughly fixed, so after a couple of visits you can predict exactly where the ambushes happen. Our Active Lava Zone guide maps the two entrances and the routes through both zones — use it as the route reference while this page covers the monster itself.

How to Get Past One — the Dodge Playbook

The Sea Dragon is fast in a straight line but turns like a cruise ship, and its fireballs are telegraphed. The pro sequence:

  1. Travel at Slow speed, engine off when close. Like every Cyclops threat, the sub's noise sphere is what draws attacks — a silent, stationary Cyclops is ignored even by Sea Dragons (the full noise system is in our Cyclops guide).
  2. Use the rock walls. Sea Dragons have trouble tracking through tight lava-canyon gaps. Squeeze the Cyclops against terrain or slip through narrow passages — the AI gives up and repositions.
  3. Decoy on approach. Launch a Creature Decoy when the AI announces the dragon; it investigates the decoy for the ~20 seconds you need to clear the corridor.
  4. Shield for the seconds that matter. When a fireball is mid-flight at you, flick the Shield Generator — it negates the hit and repels the dragon. Never leave it on; it burns ~600 energy/min (six times flank speed).
  5. On foot or Prawn: keep moving. The fire breath has a wind-up — the moment the dragon rears its head, strafe sideways or jet upward. Standing still is how you eat 500.
Fire suppression or die

If a fireball lands on the Cyclops, fires start inside immediately. Without the Fire Suppression System you'll be running wall-to-wall with extinguishers while the dragon lines up hit two. Install it before your first ILZ run — it auto-extinguishes everything and locks the bulkheads. If you must run without it, kill the engine first (a moving sub keeps drawing attacks), then extinguish, then move.

Can You Kill a Sea Dragon?

Yes, but it's a grind, not a fight. The reliable methods:

  • Prawn Suit + Drill Arm + Grappling Arm. Grapple to its face and drill. At ~5,000 HP with the drill doing ~30 DPS, it's a several-minute sustained grind while dodging swats. The Thermal Reactor Module keeps the Prawn alive in the hot water.
  • Stasis Rifle + Thermoblade/knife. Freeze it in a stasis bubble and slash — the slow, tedious route, viable because the dragon is large enough to stay in the bubble.
  • Cyclops ramming. Technically possible; practically a way to lose a Cyclops. Don't.

Killing all three is an achievement-oriented completionist goal, not a strategy — the loot is nothing special (regular creature meat) and they don't block anything. The all leviathans guide has the full kill-everything checklist if you're hunting the extinction run.

Why you should almost never fight it

Everything you actually need from the Lava Zones — kyanite, the Alien Thermal Plant's Ion Cubes, the Primary Containment Facility — is reachable by avoiding the dragons. The game designed them as environmental pressure, not boss fights. Bring decoys, a shield, and route knowledge, and you'll touch all three story objectives without ever trading a single hit.

Sea Dragon Trivia Worth Knowing

  • It's the only creature that preys on other leviathans: the devs added a rare animation of a Sea Dragon eating a Reaper in the ILZ's upper reaches.
  • It shares its body plan with the Sea Emperor (which is why the two look alike — the wiki notes the Emperor is 160–200 m, dwarfing it).
  • Its fire breath isn't just flavor: it's the only source of onboard fires in the game that can hit a moving Cyclops, which is why the Fire Suppression System exists at all.
  • Lore: the Precursor database describes it as the apex of the Lava Zone food web — and Marguerit Maida of the Degasi crew famously hunted one, per the story logs in the lost river guide's Degasi lore section.

FAQ

Where do Sea Dragons spawn in Subnautica?

Three total: two in the Inactive Lava Zone (one patrolling the main chamber, one circling the Lava Castle) and one in the Lava Lakes near the Primary Containment Facility. They never respawn once killed.

How big is the Sea Dragon Leviathan?

112 meters long (367 ft) with 5,000 HP — the largest aggressive creature in the game, second-largest leviathan overall behind the 160–200 m Sea Emperor.

How do I avoid Sea Dragons in the Lava Zones?

Travel slow, kill the engine when close (silent subs are ignored), hug rock walls through narrow passages, launch decoys on approach, and flick the Shield Generator only when a fireball is incoming. Keep the Fire Suppression System installed for the hits that do land.

Can you kill a Sea Dragon?

Yes — a Prawn Suit with Drill Arm + Grappling Arm grinds through its 5,000 HP in a few minutes, or you can freeze it with the Stasis Rifle and slash it. There's no loot incentive; killing all three is a completionist goal.

What is the Sea Dragon's weakness?

Noise discipline and terrain. It can't track a silent stationary Cyclops, gives up through tight lava canyons, and its fire breath has a long wind-up you can strafe out of. It has no elemental weakness — don't expect a "counter" weapon.
