SpiritVale Gear Guide — Equipment, Crafting, Refining and Gems

Gear is the other half of SpiritVale's build depth (cards being the first). The game's equipment pool counts 442 items across weapons, armor and accessories — swords, axes, daggers, katanas, spears, maces, staves, scythes, bows, rifles, shotguns, pistols, gatlings, launchers, twinblades, shields, headgears, faces, chests, legwear, shoes, gloves and utility items. The unusual twist: gear is not class-locked — you can equip anything your stats can carry, which opens wild hybrid builds.

This guide covers the equipment systems: substat rolls, refining, Essence crafting, enchantment, gems, and the upgrade NPCs you'll use constantly.

Substats: The Roll That Matters

Every piece of equipment drops with base stats plus substats rolled between 66.7% and 100% of their maximum value — a flat distribution that averages ~83%. The wiki's mechanics page documents the formula:

substat value = max × (roll/100 × 0.3333 + 0.6667)

Consequences:

  • Two identical items can be wildly different. A low-tier weapon with a 100% roll on attack speed can out-DPS a higher-tier weapon with a 66.7% roll.
  • Always compare before you vendor. This is the #1 beginner lesson — see the beginner's guide.
  • Substats come from each slot's own pool — there are no per-stat weights to chase, so any given roll is equally likely.

Refining: The +1/+2 Ladder

Refining is handled by the Blacksmith NPC and follows the classic MMO pattern: each refine step raises the item's power and unlocks per-refine bonuses (the wiki's compare tool lets you set refine levels and see the higher value highlighted per row). Cards, gems and artifacts also scale with refine (e.g., "+2% damage per refine").

Essence Crafting: Build Your Own Lines

The crafting system (wiki crafting page) is a point-pool system built around Essences:

Essence Effect PT cost
Essence of Flow Adjust the value of a selected line (within its min–max) 2–3
Essence of Growth Add a new substat line (up to the normal cap) 3–4
Essence of Destruction Reroll the selected line into a different substat 4–5
Essence of Rebirth Reroll every unlocked line at once 5–6
Essence of Chaos Random event — the only way to unlock the bonus line all

Each crafting action draws from your PT (point) pool. It's a crafting sandbox for perfecting pieces — the wiki even hosts a practice simulator so you can test rolls before spending real materials.

Enchantment and Gems

  • Enchantment (see the wiki enchantments page) adds bonus substats on top of the item's base lines — every item gets one forced base-attribute line, then enchantment layers more.
  • Gems (131 total): socket effects that scale per refine — e.g., "Aerial Shot Damage +2% per refine." The Gemsmith NPC removes and refines gems.

The Upgrade NPCs (Where to Do Everything)

NPC Function
Blacksmith Equipment refining
Artificer Item upgrading
Craftsman Crafting new equipment
Material Vendor Crafting materials
Gemsmith Gem removal and refining
Weaver (NPC) Card removal

All live in town hubs like Wayfarer's Landing and Nevaris — see the beginner's guide for the full NPC map.

Gearing Up Efficiently, 1–150

  1. 1–40: use quest "Bound" gear and drops with good rolls; refine only pieces you'll wear for a while. Don't sink materials into low-level items.
  2. 40–90: start investing — refine your weapon first (damage scales with refine), then chest (survival). Complete a gear set if you can; set bonuses are one of the smartest early power gains (see the builds guide).
  3. 90–150: chase boss drops (the bosses guide has the 25-boss list with levels and HP), then use Essence crafting to perfect the substat lines you actually need.
Refine wisely

Refining consumes materials and risk on the piece you spend it on. Because substat rolls vary so much, a refined "okay" item is often worse than an unrefined great-roll item — refine your best roll, not your highest base.

Frequently Asked Gear Questions

Is gear class-locked? No — equipment is freely equippable, which enables hybrid builds; only your stat spread and skill tree constrain what works.

Where do card slots come from? Equipment shows 1 or 2 card slots (e.g., "Abyss Shard — Dagger · 2 slots"); slots are part of the item, and cards socket into them — see the cards guide.

What's the difference between refining, enchanting and crafting? Refining upgrades the item (+1 ladder), enchanting layers extra substats, crafting (Essences) creates/perfects pieces from scratch.

For how gear, cards and stats combine into a full build, see the builds guide and the stats guide.
