Fields of Mistria Fishing Guide — Every Season, Fish & Legendary Catch

Fields of Mistria has 140 fish and a catch system most guides overcomplicate. The real rules are simple: a fish appears when its season, water type and weather all match — time of day never matters — and every cast costs 12 stamina. The four legendary fish are the only truly tricky part: they need a level-30 fishing perk and a specific storm or windy day.

This guide covers the full 1.0 fishing system: how catches are decided, where every active fishing spot is, the skill perks that matter, the complete legendary fish conditions, and what's actually worth your stamina.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • How the shadow-size draw system decides what you catch
  • Why time of day is a myth — and what actually controls the catch pool
  • All 34 active fishing spots and the ones everyone overlooks
  • The fishing skill, the Legendary perk, and rod upgrades
  • Every legendary fish: season, water, weather and shadow size
  • Whether fishing is worth your stamina early game

How Fishing Works in Fields of Mistria

A fish enters the catch pool when its season, water type and weather all match. Time of day is not checked — no fish in the game is restricted to a time of day, so the available list is identical at 3am and at midday.

The game then makes two draws. A fishing spot first picks a shadow size (small, medium, large or giant), then picks a catch from the fish assigned to that size:

  1. Fish with other shadow sizes don't enter the draw — a giant fish only competes with other giants, which is why they're rare and valuable.
  2. Candidates within a shadow size have different weights. Each rarity tier has a fixed number of "votes" (from 300 for the most common tier down to 40 for rare), and a fish's chance is its votes divided by the total votes in that shadow.
  3. Junk and treasure boxes use the same draw — roughly one bite in six is not a fish.
  4. As more fish unlock for a shadow size, each existing fish becomes slightly less likely to appear.
Shadow sizes at a glance

Small shadows give you cheap, common fish like Blue Gill (40g) and Chub (45g). Medium adds Carp, Rock Bass, Trout and Goby (up to 70g). Large shadows are where the money is — Pike (45g), Salmon (40g) and Sturgeon (80g). Giant shadows are the rarest and almost always worth chasing: Paddlefish sells for 90g and legendary fish only appear here or in large shadows.

Weather has four categories: clear, rain or snow, storm or blizzard, and windy. Windy days only occur in spring and autumn (about 4-6 per season), which means wind-only fish can't be caught in summer or winter. You cannot force weather — check the forecast before planning a session.

Where the Fishing Spots Are

Not every body of water has an active fishing spot. The eight outdoor areas contain 34 active spots (plus 11 decorative boxes that spawn nothing):

Area Active spots
The Beach 13
Town 9
The Eastern Road 5
Your farm (river) 2
Sweetwater Farm (ocean) 1
Other areas (Narrows, Deep Woods, Western Ruins) 4
The spots everyone misses

Two active fishing spots are in the river on your own farm, and another in the ocean at Sweetwater Farm — and the game doesn't mark them. If you're fishing casually, you're probably missing three of the most convenient spots in the game.

Each spot has its own shadow weights. Giant is the rarest size at every spot where it appears — typically one vote versus ten or more for the other sizes — so catching giants usually takes repeated casts. Four of Mistria's eight river spots give no weight to giant shadows at all, so position matters if you're hunting Paddlefish or legendary fish.

Fishing Skill, Perks & Rod Upgrades

Fishing skill increases by fishing or diving. The unlocks that actually matter:

  • Level 30 — the Legendary perk: Buy it for 80 Essence at Caldarus' Statue. Without it, legendary fish never appear — they simply aren't in any catch pool. This is the single most important unlock for completionists, and most "I've fished for days and never saw one" posts are actually this.
  • Rod upgrades: Upgrading your rod (wood → stone → copper → silver → gold and beyond) increases your chances at higher-tier fish. Community testing consistently points to gold+ rods, non-sunny days and the Reel Power perk for the rarest catches like the SDI/Ancient fish. Exact odds vary by spot.
  • The "nearby" notification: When a legendary fish is in the pool, the game flashes a "a legendary fish is nearby" message when you approach the right water. It doesn't tell you where — it tells you to stop moving and cast.

Common Fish by Season

The table below shows the fish available from the default "Anywhere" planner view, with their share within their shadow size (not overall odds — that depends on the spot):

Shadow size Fish Sell price Share in shadow
Small Blue Gill 40g 29%
Small Chub 45g 29%
Small Smallmouth Bass 35g 29%
Medium Carp 35g 21%
Medium Rock Bass 40g 21%
Medium Trout 40g 21%
Medium Goby 70g 15%
Large Pike 45g 33%
Large Salmon 40g 33%
Large Sturgeon 80g 24%
Giant Paddlefish 90g 100%

The full 140-fish list is season- and location-dependent, so your actual pool shifts as the calendar turns. Spring favours river and pond catches (Cherry Fish needs a spring pond), summer and fall are the best all-round seasons, and winter narrows things to the ocean and deep-water favourites. Before you sell a first catch, check the museum sets — fish are a donation category — and check the gift finder before selling anything rare: several villagers love fish dishes.

Mine water is a separate system

Each layer of the mines has its own fixed fish list and weights — season, weather and pool shape don't affect underground catches. If you're clearing the mines anyway, the fish there double as free museum donations and cooking ingredients.

All 4 Legendary Fish — Full Conditions

There are exactly four legendary fish, and they form the Legendary Fish Set in the museum's Fish wing. All four require the Legendary perk (Fishing level 30, 80 Essence at Caldarus' Statue) before they can appear at all.

Fish Season Water Weather Shadow
Cherry Fish Spring Pond Windy Small
Leaf Fish Fall River Windy Small
Lightning Fish Summer River Storm or blizzard Medium
Snow Fish Winter Ocean Storm or blizzard Medium

How to catch them, step by step:

  1. Unlock the Legendary perk (level 30 + 80 Essence). This is non-negotiable — the fish aren't in the game's pool before this.
  2. Check the daily forecast for the right weather: windy days (spring/fall only) for Cherry and Leaf, storms for Lightning and Snow.
  3. Head to the correct water type and keep casting at the right shadow size. Use the "a legendary fish is nearby" notification to confirm you're in the right water.
  4. Bring food — at 12 stamina per cast, a legendary hunt burns through your energy fast.
  5. Don't sell the first one: donate it to the museum to complete the Legendary Fish Set.
Weather cannot be forced

Stormy days and windy days are on a rotating forecast. If you miss Cherry Fish's spring-windy window, you wait a full in-game year. Stockpile bait, keep your rod upgraded, and make the day count when the forecast turns.

Is Fishing Worth Your Stamina?

Early game, fishing is a solid mid-tier money maker: 12 stamina per catch, Goby and Sturgeon sell for 70-80g, and a good day of large-shadow fishing beats foraging for raw gold. It falls behind cooking once you unlock recipes (a cooked dish multiplies ingredient value several times over) — but fishing feeds that cooking loop and the museum grind, so it never stops being useful.

The real value of fishing past the early game is museum completion and gift coverage: Terithia the fisherwoman loves fish dishes, Taliferro the chef loves seafood, and several romanceable characters have fish-based loved gifts. Fishing is infrastructure for the rest of your game, not just a money tap.

The 12-stamina rule

Every cast costs exactly 12 stamina regardless of what you catch. A serious fishing session costs 100+ stamina, so carry food (or eat a meal before you leave town). If you're low on stamina, skip the small shadows — the common fish aren't worth the energy.

FAQ

How do you catch legendary fish in Fields of Mistria? Unlock the Legendary fishing perk (Fishing level 30, 80 Essence at Caldarus' Statue), then fish the right water on the right weather day: Cherry Fish (spring pond, windy), Leaf Fish (fall river, windy), Lightning Fish (summer river, storm), Snow Fish (winter ocean, storm).

What is the best way to make money fishing in Fields of Mistria? Target large and giant shadows — Sturgeon (80g) and Paddlefish (90g) — and use the museum/gift finder before selling rare catches. Cooking beats fishing for raw profit once unlocked, but fish feed the cooking and museum loops.

How many fishing spots are in Fields of Mistria? 34 active spots across eight outdoor areas: 13 at the Beach, 9 in town, 5 on the Eastern Road, 2 in your farm's river and 1 in the ocean at Sweetwater Farm, plus 4 elsewhere.

Does time of day matter for fishing in Fields of Mistria? No. No fish in the game is restricted to a time of day — the catch pool depends only on season, water type and weather.

How do you unlock the Legendary fishing perk in Fields of Mistria? Raise your Fishing skill to level 30, then buy the Legendary perk for 80 Essence at Caldarus' Statue. Legendary fish cannot appear before this.

What fish can you catch in the mines in Fields of Mistria? Each mine layer has a fixed fish list and weights that ignore season and weather. Mine fish are good for museum donations and cooking, and they don't compete with the surface rotation.
