Is DOS2 Cross-Platform? — Multiplayer Explained

Is Divinity Original Sin 2 cross-platform? No — here is how co-op actually works on PC, PS4, Xbox and Switch, which modes exist, and where cross-saves do exist.

Is Divinity Original Sin 2 Cross Platform? — Crossplay and Co-Op Explained

No — Divinity Original Sin 2 has no cross-platform multiplayer of any kind. PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch player pools are completely separate: a PC player cannot join a PS5 campaign, and a Switch player cannot play with Xbox. The one cross-platform feature in the entire game is Steam-to-Switch cloud saves, which transfers a campaign file between those two platforms but never allows playing together. The short version: if crossplay is your deciding factor, DOS2 will not give it to you; if you just want to know how co-op works on your platform, this guide covers every mode — online co-op, split-screen, Arena PvP and Game Master mode — and exactly what each platform supports.

Do not assume crossplay works like other RPGs

DOS2 is from an era before cross-platform multiplayer became standard, and Larian never retrofitted it. If your group is split between PC and console — or between PlayStation and Xbox — you will not be able to play together in any mode, no matter how you host the session. Plan the platform choice as a group before anyone buys.

The Crossplay Answer, Platform by Platform

Pair Crossplay? Notes
PC ↔ PS4/PS5 No Separate ecosystems entirely
PC ↔ Xbox No Separate ecosystems entirely
PS4 ↔ PS5 Yes (same account) The free next-gen upgrade keeps the same player base
Xbox One ↔ Series X|S Yes (same account) Smart Delivery; same pool
PlayStation ↔ Xbox No No cross-platform anything
Steam ↔ Switch No (save only) Cross-saves work; crossplay does not

Official source: Fextralife — Multiplayer — "There is no cross-platform multiplayer mode... Those who are playing on PC cannot play with console players (PS, Xbox), as well as with handheld players (Nintendo Switch 2, iPad)."

This has been true since launch and nothing has changed it — not the 2019 Switch port, not the December 2025 current-gen releases. When the native PS5/Xbox Series/Switch 2 versions launched, Larian confirmed the same feature set with no crossplay addition; the PS5 guide has the upgrade details.

The One Cross-Platform Feature: Steam ↔ Switch Cross-Saves

The exception that confuses everyone: save files do travel between Steam and Switch, through your free Larian account. You play the Definitive Edition on PC, quit, and pick the same campaign up on Switch — progress, characters and quest states all carry over. Confirmed by Larian at the Switch launch and still working today (including on the Switch 2 edition).

Important caveats:

  • It is save transfer, not live play — you cannot be in the same session from both platforms.
  • It links Steam Definitive Edition ↔ Switch Definitive Edition only; PlayStation and Xbox saves do not participate.
  • Gift Bag settings travel inside the save, so a Gift Bag-enabled PC save arrives with those features active.

The full mechanics are covered in our Switch port guide. For everything else on this page, the console guide and PS5 guide break down the platform-specific multiplayer.

DOS2 Game Modes: Everything Multiplayer

Beyond the campaign, DOS2 ships with two dedicated multiplayer modes plus the co-op options — this is the "game modes" question people search for:

  • Online co-op (2-4 players): the core multiplayer. The host runs the campaign, friends join through the lobby system, and each player controls their own character. Everyone needs their own copy; on console, online play requires PS Plus (PlayStation) or Game Pass Core/Ultimate (Xbox).
  • Local split-screen co-op (2 players): couch co-op on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Series X|S — but not on Switch, which is the one platform without split-screen.
  • Arena mode (local/online PvP): the Definitive Edition revamped the Arena into a proper PvP mode — build a party, fight another party. It supports local hot-seat play with a single controller and online matches, and it is the only local multiplayer option on Switch.
  • Game Master mode: a tabletop-style tool where one player acts as Game Master — spawning enemies, triggering quests, controlling NPCs and improvising a story for 1-4 players. Available on all platforms (it was overhauled for the Definitive Edition).
  • PvP (lobbies): beyond the Arena, you can run player-vs-player fights in custom lobbies — the Steam store lists "PvP / Online PvP / Shared and Split Screen PvP" as supported features.

The multiplayer design is the game's BAFTA-winning element (Best Multiplayer, 2018): up to four players each driving their own character through a shared story, where dialogue choices can openly conflict — one player can make a choice that undermines another's quest, and the game lets it stand.

How Many Players and What You Need

Mode Players Requirement
Campaign co-op 2-4 One copy per player; online or split-screen
Split-screen 2 One console, two controllers (not Switch)
Arena PvP 2 parties (up to 4v4 with custom rules) Local hot-seat or online
Game Master 1 GM + 1-4 players Same session as co-op

Practical notes from years of player reports:

  • Every player creates their own character in the host's campaign — you cannot import a character from a solo save, and joining players' characters are saved with the host's campaign.
  • The host's world state is king. Quests, loot and NPC fates belong to the host; co-op partners are guests with agency in dialogue, not parallel protagonists.
  • Lag and desync are rare because combat is turn-based — DOS2 is genuinely one of the smoothest online co-op RPGs of its era on a decent connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Divinity Original Sin 2 cross-platform?

No. DOS2 has no cross-platform multiplayer on any platform combination — PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and iPad players are all in separate pools. The only cross-platform feature is Steam-to-Switch cloud saves.

Can PC and PS4 players play DOS2 together?

No. There is no crossplay between PC and any console. If your friend group is split across platforms, you cannot play the campaign together — the Steam-to-Switch cross-save only lets you each play the same campaign on your own platform.

Does DOS2 have cross-saves?

Partially. Steam Definitive Edition and Switch Definitive Edition sync saves through your Larian account — start on PC, continue on Switch. PlayStation and Xbox saves do not cross-save anywhere (PS4→PS5 and Xbox One→Series transfers are same-platform migrations).

What multiplayer modes does DOS2 have?

Online co-op (2-4), local split-screen co-op (2, on all platforms except Switch), Arena PvP (local hot-seat and online), Game Master mode (1 GM + 1-4 players) and custom PvP lobbies.

Can you play DOS2 split-screen?

Yes, on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S — 2 players on one console. The Switch version is the exception: it has no split-screen at all, only online co-op and Arena hot-seat.
