Big Walk map guide: the island's regions in order, unlocking the Map Room after the Red Tower, the paper map and GPS, and how navigation actually works.

Big Walk Map — Regions, Map Room & How to Navigate the Island (2026)

Big Walk starts with no map at all — no HUD, no quest log, nothing but landmarks and each other. The map arrives later, and it arrives in style: a giant 3D model of the whole island on the floor of the Map Room, unlocked behind the Red Tower. This guide covers the island's regions in order, how to unlock and use every map tool, and how navigation actually works before and after you find it.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • The region layout in progression order (drawbridge → four towers → Black Tower)
  • Exactly how to unlock the Map Room and its tools
  • The paper map, the 3D map, laser pointers and the compass — what each is for
  • How the GPS and coordinate system fit in (linked to our coordinates guide)
  • What the map can't tell you (and what to use instead)

The Island Layout: Regions in Order

Big Walk's open world is one continuous island, but progression runs through a natural order. Everything loops on the same pattern — solve puzzles, collect gourds, cut keys, unlock the next region:

  1. The Playground (tutorial) — your spawn hub; the controls are pinned on the walls
  2. The Drawbridge — the starting area's gate; four puzzles open it
  3. Red Tower — the first colored tower; its key unlocks the Map Room
  4. Green Tower — the chairlift route into the high country
  5. Blue Tower — the train route (the famous Big Ride)
  6. Yellow Tower — the underground tunnel network
  7. Black Tower — the late-game progression tower
  8. The black sphere — the final puzzle area that leads to the ending

The full step-by-step through every region is in our walkthrough; the puzzle-by-puzzle breakdown is in puzzle solutions.

Per the official Steam store page: "Set out with your friends through a wide-open world full of challenges, puzzles, and discoveries."

Before the Map: Navigating by Landmarks

Until you unlock the map, orientation comes from the world itself:

  • Towers are the compass — each colored tower is visible from far away and sticks out against the greenery
  • Key-cutter arrows — every key cutter points toward the next one, so the key route is self-navigating
  • The skyline — the drawbridge, the train station and the chairlift are all readable from a distance

Groups that communicate well (see our multiplayer guide for voice/gesture tips) navigate the early hours faster than any map could help them.

How to Unlock the Map Room (Red Tower Route)

The map is gated behind the Red Tower, the first colored tower you can reach after crossing the drawbridge. The unlock chain, confirmed by IGN's wiki and Polygon:

  1. Solve puzzles around the world to collect five gourds (the pear-shaped collectibles)
  2. Slot all five into the Red Tower's console to get a key
  3. Insert the key at the tower's entrance — it shaves the key down and the arrow on the machine points to the next cutter
  4. Follow the cutter arrows until you reach a big blue doorway with red stairs
  5. Go in — that's the Map Room
Do the Red Tower before any coordinate work

The GPS, the paper map and the 3D map are all inside the Map Room. If you're staring at a number puzzle (like the famous 4166 1899 box) and haven't done the Red Tower, that's the missing piece — not the puzzle. See our coordinates guide for how the numbers fit in.

Inside the Map Room: Four Tools, Four Jobs

The Map Room is a small museum of navigation gear, and each tool does something different:

  • The 3D floor map — a massive model of the entire island showing every landmark and puzzle location. It does not show completion state, so "where have we been?" is still a group memory problem
  • The paper map — a normal-sized map you can carry around (it fits in your backpack). It shows landmarks and towers, which makes it the travel map
  • Laser pointers — three of them, for marking spots on the big map and agreeing on targets from a distance ("we're going to that ridge")
  • The compass — helps with bearing-based navigation and reading the coordinate system
The big map hides challenge locations until you visit them

Both Polygon and IGN note the 3D map won't tell you which challenges you've completed. The color-coding of the regions is the real signal — each colored area clusters its puzzles, so "head to a colorful area" is the intended fallback.

GPS & Coordinates: The Map's Hidden Layer

Once you have the paper map, the GPS device (a light-blue box showing your position as two four-digit numbers) turns the island into a grid. Coordinates like 4166, 1899 are latitude/longitude-style positions you can look up on the paper map and walk to. The GPS lives just southeast of the Green Tower near the chairlift station, and the full coordinate table plus every secret location is in our coordinates & secrets guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Big Walk have a map?

Yes — but only after you unlock it. The game starts with no map at all; the Map Room (and the carryable paper map inside it) unlocks after completing the Red Tower.

How do you get the map in Big Walk?

Complete the Red Tower: collect five gourds, slot them in the tower console, get the key, follow the key-cutter arrows to the blue doorway with red stairs, and enter the Map Room. The paper map and GPS are inside.

What regions are in Big Walk?

The Playground (tutorial), the Drawbridge, the Red/Green/Blue/Yellow towers, the Black Tower, and the black sphere finale — plus the underground tunnel network and the train route between them.

How do coordinates work in Big Walk?

Unlock the Map Room, grab the paper map, find the GPS device near the Green Tower's chairlift, and read your position as two four-digit numbers (lat/long-style). Match them on the paper map and walk there.

Where is the map room in Big Walk?

Follow the Red Tower key-cutter route — it ends at a big blue doorway with red stairs on the tower side of the island. The room holds the 3D island map, paper map, laser pointers and compass.
