Big Walk Multiplayer & Co-op Guide — Player Count, Join Codes & Voice
Big Walk is a multiplayer-only co-op adventure — every puzzle, every moment, is built around a group working and talking together. Understanding how its multiplayer works (player count, join codes, voice chat, and its limits) matters before you even start. This guide covers everything you need to get your group playing.

Here's what you'll learn:
- The player count and how puzzles scale (2/3/4 players)
- How Join Codes work and how to start a session
- Why there's no local co-op and no solo mode
- How proximity voice chat actually behaves
- How the host/save system works

Player Count: 2 to 12
Big Walk supports 2 to 12 players in a single session. The official press kit describes the range perfectly: "as few as 2 players (a focused co-op experience) or as many as 12 (an absolute mess)." Both are valid ways to play.
Puzzles scale for 2/3/4-player groups: bigger groups get more buttons to press, more pieces to collect, and higher point targets — but the core logic stays the same. The game officially balances for 2, 3 and 4 players; sessions above 4 still work but get more chaotic by design.
The best first experience is a focused 2–3 player group. Bigger groups are fun but puzzle rooms get crowded and communication gets harder — especially in the puzzles that mute you.
How to Start a Session & Join Codes
Big Walk has no automatic matchmaking — you connect with friends through direct invites or Join Codes:
- The host starts a session and generates a Join Code
- Share the code with anyone you want to play with
- Friends enter the code to join seamlessly — crossplay included (PS5, PC, Switch 2 and macOS)
The host's save file is the world state — friends join and leave the host's world, and their progress ties back to it. There's no platform-specific friends list requirement; the code is the whole mechanism.
Progress, unlocks, and transport all live in the host's save. If you swap hosts mid-run, the new host starts from their own save state — unlocked transport can disappear. Designate one person as the group's "canonical" host.
Why There's No Local Co-op or Solo Mode
Two of the most-asked questions have definitive answers:
- No local co-op / splitscreen. Big Walk is online co-op only — no couch co-op, no splitscreen, one player per device.
- No solo mode. You can load into a world alone, but you cannot solve puzzles or progress on your own — every puzzle requires cooperation. There is no single-player path.
If you only have one device, you need friends playing on their own devices. This isn't a missing feature — the entire game loop assumes more than one person.
Voice Chat & Communication
Big Walk leans hard on talking, then takes it away. The in-game proximity voice chat is the primary channel:
- Voices fade with distance — walk too far and you simply can't hear each other
- Voices echo down corridors and muffle through walls
- Walkie-talkies crackle and relay your voice over long range
- Many puzzles remove your voice entirely, forcing you to use gestures, mimes, laser pointers and flares
The best groups keep an external voice channel open (Discord, etc.) for the parts where the game mutes you — some puzzles are dramatically easier when you can still coordinate outside the game's restrictions.
The Best Group Setup
From how the game is actually played:
- Sweet spot: 3–6 players — enough hands for split-up puzzles without voice chaos
- Permanent host: the person whose save carries the world's progress
- Scheduled sessions: progress persists, so a weekly group hang that advances the island is the intended way to play
- Solo prep time: load in alone before group time to tune audio, scout the starting area, and practice gestures — everything you do carries over when friends join
