7 Days to Die Armor Sets: Stats, Best Armor, Cosmetics

The 1.0 overhaul gave 7 Days to Die a set-based armor system: 16 armor sets in three weight classes — light, medium and heavy — each with a full-set bonus that scales with the quality of your lowest piece. The best armor isn't a single answer: it's Preacher for all-round light combat, Enforcer for pistol builds, Raider for heavy melee tanks, and Nerd for XP farming. This guide covers the full set list with stats, how weight classes change stamina, mobility and noise, what to craft first, and how the V2.0 cosmetic wardrobe system lets your look and your protection evolve separately.

How Armor Works After the 1.0 Overhaul

Version 1.0 replaced the old armor pieces with themed sets. You wear a helmet, chest, gloves, legs and boots from one set (plus a shirt, pants and shoes underneath from the wardrobe system), and matching all five grants a set bonus — the bonus strength scales with the quality of the lowest-quality piece you're wearing, which is the game's way of telling you your armor is only as good as its weakest link.

The three weight classes are the real decision:

Weight Armor rating Stamina drain Mobility Noise Best for
Light Lowest None (0) 0% penalty 0% Stealth, agility builds, long expeditions
Medium Middle Moderate (-0.56/s per piece) -4% +10% Balanced combat, mixed loadouts
Heavy Highest Heavy (-0.9/s per piece) -6% +20% Horde-night tanking, melee

The trade is real: heavy armor's damage reduction is meaningless if you're out of stamina mid-fight, which is why light-armor builds with the right mods routinely outperform heavy sets in the current meta — you can reposition during a horde instead of standing still.

The Armor Set List and Stats

Per the official wiki's List of Armor, the core stats (Quality 1 → Quality 6):

Set Class Armor rating (Q1→Q6) Stamina/s Mobility Noise Durability
Padded Light 4.5 → 6.5 0 0% 0% 100 → 200
Leather Light 6.9 → 8.9 -0.56 -4% +10% 200 → 300
Military Light 10.0 → 11.9 -0.56 -4% +10% 300 → 400
Scrap Heavy 7.0 → 9.0 -0.9 -6% +20% 200 → 300
Iron Heavy 9.5 → 11.4 -0.9 -6% +20% 300 → 400
Steel Heavy 13.7 → 15.6 -0.9 -6% +20% 400 → 500

On top of these six "plain" sets sit the outfit sets — themed armor with gameplay-defining bonuses. The ones the community actually builds around:

  • Preacher (light) — arguably the best weight-to-value set in the game: no movement or stealth penalty, and the Tier-6 gloves give a 60% all-damage bonus. Full set grants injury resistance and infection reduction.
  • Enforcer (light) — the pistol set: bartering and fuel bonuses, plus a big damage/reload boost for the .44 Magnum and Desert Vulture on the full set.
  • Athletic (light) — the endurance set: max health/stamina, sprint speed boots, and slower food/water drain. The PvP and long-expedition favorite.
  • Nerd (light, heavy-ish head) — XP-focused: the headgear grants bonus XP (Nerd Goggles 2–20%), and the outfit can grant extra skill levels. The leveling workhorse.
  • Ranger (medium) — the jack-of-all-trades: health, stamina, bartering, and revolver/lever-action boosts.
  • Biker (medium) — melee: stun resistance, melee damage, and reduced stamina per swing; full set adds armor rating and fuel savings.
  • Commando (medium) — ranged DPS: strong all-ranged-weapons gloves bonus, sprint speed, faster healing recovery.
  • Assassin (medium) — stealth: sneak-attack damage, Agility weapon speed, noise-reducing boots.
  • Raider (heavy) — the tank's set: highest protection, melee damage gloves, and at Legendary quality the helmet grants complete stun immunity.
Set bonus scales with your weakest piece

A Tier-6 Preacher chest with Tier-2 gloves is a Tier-2 set bonus. When you upgrade, upgrade the whole set evenly — one straggler piece caps everything. The game shows the bonus strength under Status Effects in the character menu so you can verify it yourself.

Best Armor by Playstyle (2026 Meta)

  • Stealth / sniper: Military (early) → Preacher (late), light class, with Muffled Connectors mods. Full stamina pool for repositioning, minimal noise.
  • Horde-night tank: Steel or Raider, heavy class, with Padded Liner / Reinforced Plate / Impact Bracing mods. The Heavy Armor perk adds 15% damage reduction per rank.
  • All-round solo: Banded Iron chest + light helmet/gloves/boots — decent torso protection where most damage lands, without nuking your stamina budget.
  • Leveling: Nerd set — XP boost while questing, swap to combat armor for the horde.
  • Farming/gathering: keep a Scavenger or Lumberjack set in a box near your mining/farming area and swap in only when harvesting (gathering sets boost yield and tool durability but are useless in combat).

Crafting: Magazines, Kits, and Quality Tiers

Armor crafting is magazine-gated. Each piece needs an Armor Crafting Kit plus materials, and the recipes unlock through the Armored Up crafting magazine (reading 11 lets you craft quality 1–2, up to 100 for the best tiers). The material split:

  • Primitive set — plant fibers, wood, cloth fragments, duct tape. Craftable day one, no set bonus.
  • Light sets — Armor Crafting Kit + cloth fragments + forged iron (higher tiers need forged steel).
  • Medium/heavy sets — Armor Crafting Kit + leather + forged iron / forged steel.
  • Quality 6 also requires 1 Legendary Part per piece.

Per the official 1.0 announcement, 1.0 shipped "a completely overhauled armor system with themed sets and first-person hands reflecting worn gear" — the set system is official 1.0 design, not a mod.

Cosmetics: The Wardrobe System (V2.0+)

The second pillar of looking good is the cosmetic wardrobe system, added with the V2.0 "Storm's Brewing" update. It separates stats from appearance: you equip functional armor in the armor slots and wear any clothing or outfit in the cosmetic slots, so your survivor can look like a lumberjack while running full steel. V2.0 also introduced Twitch Drops and the first DLC outfits on top of the system, and V3.1 continued the trend with the "Big Beak" chicken mascot outfit (announced in the V3.1 release notes). Cosmetics are pure looks — they never change your armor rating.

Don't scrap your cosmetic outfit

If you find a rare clothing piece or outfit you like the look of, store it — you can't re-craft most cosmetic items easily, and the wardrobe system is exactly what makes them wearable without hurting your combat stats.

FAQ

What is the best armor set in 7 Days to Die?

For most players, Preacher (light) — top damage bonus with no mobility penalty. Enforcer for pistol builds, Raider/Steel for heavy horde-night tanking, Nerd for leveling. There's no single best set; pick by playstyle and keep the whole set at similar quality.

How many armor sets are in 7 Days to Die?

16 armor sets as of 1.0+, with 15 providing a set bonus (Primitive has none). They span three weight classes — light, medium and heavy — plus gathering sets like Scavenger and Lumberjack.

What is the difference between light and heavy armor?

Light armor gives no stamina drain or movement/noise penalty but the lowest protection. Heavy armor has the highest armor rating at the cost of stamina drain (-0.9/s per piece), -6% mobility and +20% noise. Medium sits between. Heavy is for standing fights; light is for mobility and stealth.

How do cosmetics and the wardrobe system work?

Since V2.0, armor and appearance are separate: wear functional armor in armor slots and any outfit in cosmetic slots. The look never affects stats, which is how the Twitch Drops and DLC outfits (like the V3.1 "Big Beak" set) work.

How do I craft armor and unlock better tiers?

Read Armored Up crafting magazines (up to 100 to unlock quality 6), craft an Armor Crafting Kit, then make pieces from cloth (light) or leather (heavy) plus forged iron/steel. Quality 6 needs 1 Legendary Part per piece. Primitive armor is craftable immediately from plant fiber and wood.
