7 Days to Die Darkness Falls: Classes, Features and Install (2026)

Darkness Falls (DF) is the most famous 7 Days to Die overhaul mod — a total conversion by KhaineGB that has been in development since Alpha 8 and is the default answer to "what overhaul should I play?" Its 2026 build (V6) adds 8 playable classes with 6 quests each, a 96-slot backpack, a 12-slot crafting queue, demon-tier zombies, and a tech tree that runs all the way to titanium and laser weapons — and it's pinned to the game's 1.x version line (currently V1.4), which is the single most important fact before you install it. This guide covers what DF changes, the class roster, the version pin, and the install path.

What Darkness Falls Actually Changes

DF isn't a tweak pack — it rebuilds the game's progression, combat and crafting around its own systems. From the mod's own release documentation: "8 Classes to choose from, with 6 quests each! (Class quests take approx 60 mins to finish if you grind hard)… 96 Slot Bigger back pack! 12 slot crafting queue! Custom UI." On top of that:

  • Classes with identity. Your class decides your perk lines, crafting specializations and quest rewards. In multiplayer, roles actually matter — a party of one of each plays completely differently from a vanilla group.
  • A much harder world. Ferals dominate at night from earlier than vanilla, towns have noticeably higher zombie density, and the endgame throws demonic-tier enemies and the Behemoth at you — real boss-fight material.
  • A longer tech tree. Scrap tier bridges stone and iron; stainless steel and titanium extend the tree past vanilla's steel ceiling; late-game weapons include coilguns and laser weapons.
  • New workstations. Nine new crafting stations including the Advanced Forge (smelts without burning fuel) and the Lathe, which gates firearm crafting.
  • Richer survival. Expanded crops (apples, oranges, wheat, tomatoes…), new cooked recipes, action skills and skill books layered on top of vanilla's system.
  • 96-slot backpack + 12-slot crafting queue. The inventory upgrade alone changes the game; you scavenge longer and queue crafting instead of babysitting it.

Per the official Darkness Falls thread, the mod was created to fix "a few 'issues' myself, my wife and some friends felt the game had" — it's a passion project that grew into the scene's flagship overhaul, and KhaineGB still supports it via Patreon/Ko-fi without paywalling any content.

The Eight Classes

The current roster (it has evolved across DF versions, so always confirm against the release notes):

Class Playstyle
Civilian No masteries, no perks — the hardcore option
Farmer Farming recipes, the Blunderbuss; slow start, strong mid-game
Hunter Extra weapon blueprints via masteries, strong early damage
Laborer High-tier construction and base-building recipes
Mechanic Engines, vehicles and related crafting
Scientist The medic — advanced healing; near-mandatory in serious groups
Security The tank — better armor access and damage absorption
Survivalist Generalist with early Radio, Pickaxe and Fire Axe access

Each class runs 6 quests (roughly an hour of grinding each), and you can master multiple classes over a long campaign. The standard co-op advice: don't double up — one Scientist, one Security and one Mechanic beats three generalists, because the class quest rewards and perk lines don't overlap.

The Version Pin: Why DF Needs the 1.x Branch

This is the part that catches everyone. DF V6 is built for the game's 1.x line — currently pinned at V1.4 — and it will not load on V2.x or V3.x. The mod's own files list "7DTD Version Required: 1.4 / Current Mod Version: 6.0.0.20". Hosting providers document the same picture (BisectHosting's DF table: A20 → alpha20.7, A21 → alpha21.2, DF v1.4 → v1.4).

To play it:

  1. Pin the game branch first: Steam → right-click 7 Days to Die → Properties → Betas → select the 1.x branch (e.g. v1.4), or let the 7D2D Mod Launcher do it automatically.
  2. Install DF into that pinned install (see below).
  3. Never open the DF save on a newer branch — and don't chase the newest game version for DF. The 2.x and 3.x lines (V2.6, V3.0 "Dead Hot Summer", V3.1 "Henpocalypse" — see the roadmap) run vanilla, War3zuk, The Wasteland and the other current-line packs; DF stays on 1.x until KhaineGB ships a forward port.
Update order is everything

Updating 7 Days to Die to V2.6 or V3.1 and then dropping DF V6 into the Mods folder produces a game that won't load — the XML targets DF patches don't exist on newer branches. Pin the game to the branch the mod needs first, then install the mod. The 7D2D Mod Launcher does both steps together.

How to Install Darkness Falls

  1. Install the 7D2D Mod Launcher (V5).
  2. Create a profile, search "Darkness Falls", install the V6 build.
  3. Press Play — the launcher pins the 1.x branch, disables EAC, and boots the modded game in its own isolated install.

Manual

  1. Pin Steam to the v1.4 (1.x) branch.
  2. Download the DF V6 files from KhaineGB's official channels (the community thread, the Azure DevOps repo, or GitLab) — not from random re-host sites.
  3. Extract and copy the DarknessFalls folder into %APPDATA%\7DaysToDie\Mods.
  4. Launch with Easy Anti-Cheat disabled (Properties → Launch Options) — mods and EAC don't mix (same rule as every mod, see the mod launcher guide).
  5. Start a new world — DF rebuilds blocks, items and progression, so a vanilla save won't load.

Server side

DF on a dedicated server: install the server files (Azure/GitLab), pin the server to the same 1.x branch, and give the box headroom — 8 GB of RAM is the documented requirement. BisectHosting's guide covers the panel install; the servers guide covers the config basics. Client and server must match mod list and version exactly.

Pair DF with CompoPack

DF worlds get dramatically better with CompoPack prefabs (thousands of community POIs) installed into the same 1.x branch. It's the classic DF companion — more and better buildings, same install rules.

FAQ

What is Darkness Falls in 7 Days to Die?

The flagship total-overhaul mod by KhaineGB: 8 classes with 6 quests each, a 96-slot backpack, demon-tier endgame, titanium/laser tech, nine new workstations and a much harder survival loop. It's a free expansion-sized rebuild of the game.

What classes are in Darkness Falls?

Civilian, Farmer, Hunter, Laborer, Mechanic, Scientist, Security and Survivalist (the roster evolves between DF versions). Each has its own perk lines, crafting specializations and a 6-quest class storyline.

What game version does Darkness Falls need?

DF V6 requires the 1.x line of the game (currently V1.4). It does not run on V2.x or V3.x. Pin the game to the 1.x branch in Steam's Betas menu (or via the 7D2D Mod Launcher) and keep it there.

Is Darkness Falls harder than vanilla 7 Days to Die?

Yes, deliberately. More zombies, feral nights from early, boss-style demon enemies, and stricter progression. It also gives you better tools — the 96-slot backpack, deeper crafting and class perks are the compensation.

How do I install Darkness Falls?

Best path: 7D2D Mod Launcher → profile → install Darkness Falls → Play (it pins the branch and disables EAC automatically). Manual: pin the game to 1.x, drop the DF folder into the Mods folder, disable EAC, start a new world.
