Persona 5 and Royal New Game Plus: what carries over (social stats, money, compendium, equipment), what resets, NG+ exclusives like Satanael, and trophy tips.

New Game Plus Persona 5 — What Carries Over & NG+ Guide

New Game Plus unlocks after you beat Persona 5 or Royal, and it carries over your social stats, money, equipment and the entire Persona compendium — while resetting Confidant ranks, Joker's level and story progress. The result is a dramatically faster second run (community reports typically 40-60 hours vs. the ~100-hour first playthrough) that exists partly for the Platinum trophy, the NG+-exclusive Personas like Satanael, and the true-ending route requirements you may have missed the first time.

How to Start New Game Plus

Beat the game and save the clear data, then from the title screen choose New Game+ (the option appears once a clear save exists). Both Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal support it, and Royal's version carries the same systems plus a few extras (Mementos stamps, Thieves Den progress). The Push Square NG+ guide walks through the exact menu flow if you're unsure.

You can't use a New Game+ save to branch endings

NG+ starts the full story over from April 12. If your goal was only to see Royal's third-semester ending, make sure you unlocked it on your first run (Maruki's Councillor Confidant at rank 9 before November 18) — NG+ is for replaying, not save-scumming one ending.

What Carries Over

Confirmed by Push Square and TheGamer's NG+ guides, which agree on every item:

Carries over Details
Social stats Knowledge, Guts, Proficiency, Kindness, Charm — all five stay maxed
Persona compendium Every registered Persona, at the level/skills/traits you last registered
Money All remaining yen carries over
Equipment Weapons, armor and accessories — both equipped and in inventory
HP/SP increases Permanent boosts from training at home / meditating at the temple
Mementos stamps (Royal) All collected stamps carry over
Key items Some story-adjacent items (e.g., Valentine's chocolate)
Playtime Your clock keeps running (100h + 5h NG+ = 105h shown)
Challenge battle scores (Royal) Velvet Room challenge results and rewards

TheGamer's NG+ guide covers the full list including the smaller carries.

What Resets

  • Confidant ranks — all reset to 1. Their key items (gifts you earn at rank 10) carry over and let you start with some rank perks, but the ranks themselves start fresh. This is the main reason a completionist run is a two-run project: maxing all 23 Confidants in Royal in one playthrough is theoretically possible but brutal, and the Platinum is designed around NG+.
  • Joker's level — resets to 1 (though compendium Personas can be re-summoned at high levels if you have the money).
  • Consumables and story items — restocked/removed.
  • Story progression — everything restarts; palaces, Mementos paths and requests are re-gated.
Spend down before the final save

Money carries, but there's a smarter play: spend your remaining cash on compendium registrations (so high-level Personas are cheap to re-summon) and equipment you actually want, then finish. Players who enter NG+ broke lose nothing but also gain nothing — the compendium re-summon costs are the biggest early-game money sink.

NG+ Exclusive Content

New Game Plus in Persona 5/Royal is where the true endgame lives:

  • Satanael — the Fool Arcana ultimate (level 95), fusion-able only in NG+ (the list notes it as "Start New Game Plus" on the Megami Tensei Wiki P5R persona list).
  • Superbosses — the Reaper (available in NG+ at a much lower difficulty ratio thanks to your carryover) and the Justine & Caroline showdown.
  • True ending / max-Confidant requirements — NG+ is the practical path to maxing every Confidant and seeing Royal's full third semester with all requirements met.
  • Platinum trophy — trophy lists in both games assume NG+ (full compendium, all Confidants, all Mementos requests).

Our Persona 5 persona list covers the compendium targets, and if you're planning the marathon itself, how long is Persona 5 breaks down the time investment for run one and run two.

Tips for a Fast NG+ Run

  1. Keep a "core four" of compendium Personas — one damage persona, one healer/support, and a filler for coverage. Re-summon them on day one and you'll one-shot your way through Kamoshida.
  2. Do Confidants first, grind later — with social stats maxed, every rank-up opportunity is available immediately; the only real bottleneck is calendar slots.
  3. Grab the free DLC personas if you're on PC/current-gen — the all-DLC-included ports give you Izanagi-no-Okami Picaro and friends from the start (see our Take Your Heart edition guide), which trivializes early palaces.
  4. Target NG+ exclusives early — Satanael's fusion ingredients should be registered as soon as their arcana slots open, so you're not re-farming at level 90.

Per the official Persona 5 Royal Steam store page, Royal adds a third semester and new endings — the NG+ run is also where the "true" version of that content with maxed bonds actually plays out in full.
