No More Room in Hell 2 Zombies — Every Type, Behavior & How to Kill Them

No More Room in Hell 2 keeps its zombie design grounded in Romero tradition — no special-infected mutations with tentacles, just freshly reanimated corpses that run, decayed shamblers that scream, and armored dead wearing what they died in. The official 1.0 patch notes give exact health values: normal Zombies have 100 HP, Shamblers 70, and Primes 130. How each type behaves — and how you should kill them — is the difference between a clean extraction and a lost Responder.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • The core zombie types and their exact health values
  • How Runners, Shamblers, and Primes each change the fight
  • The special zombies (Firefighter, Riot Police, Construction) and their weak points
  • Crawlers and why you must always confirm kills
  • The best weapon approach for every type

Zombie HP & Damage Basics

The 1.0 notes state it plainly: "keep in mind that normal Zombies have 100 health, while Shamblers have 70 & Primes have 130." Melee damage is listed as Quick / Strong / Charged (X/Y/Z), and knowing the breakpoints matters:

  • Two heavy attacks to the head put down any standard walker — most non-Prime types.
  • One headshot kills most zombies with a decent caliber; a single headshot from the .357 lever-action or .45 M1911 is the community's bread-and-butter.
  • Primes need two headshots (or one from the biggest rifles) — the fandom documentation notes a single headshot kills them with the right weapon, but treating them as a 2-tap is the safe play.

Headshots are king, but dismemberment is the franchise's other signature: cut legs with a sharp weapon and the zombie becomes a Crawler — slower, but not dead. The full melee damage system (Quick/Strong/Charged, stability damage, limb severing) is in our weapons guide.

Walkers — The Standard Zombie

The default dead: slow, shambling, 100 HP, and dangerous only in numbers or when they get their hands on you. Their grab leads to the button-mash escape minigame; fail it (or get grabbed below ~15% stamina) and you're bitten and infected. See the infection guide for what a bite costs you. Walkers are the fodder of every map and the majority of your kill counts on the way to achievements like leetsauce (1,337 kills).

Runners — Fast, Loud, and Everywhere on Hard

Runners are freshly reanimated walkers that sprint. They scream while chasing — the audio cue is your warning — and they spawn more often when you fire unsuppressed weapons or push into higher danger zones. Critical details:

  • Any zombie type except Shambler can be a Runner — including Firefighter and Riot Police variants.
  • Runner crawlers are still fast. If you cut a runner's legs off, it keeps crawling at you quickly — always confirm the kill.
  • Headshots are the efficient answer; runners have lower stamina than walkers in the game's lore, but you won't win a foot race in a corridor.

Nightmare difficulty makes Runners "much more prevalent," per the official notes, which is a big part of why Nightmare runs demand silenced weapons or strict melee discipline.

Shamblers — The Gas Carrier

Shamblers (70 HP, the weakest zombie) are the most dangerous per point of health. They're the decayed end of the undead spectrum — practically flesh and bone — and they carry a gas cloud around their bodies:

  • When a Shambler spots you it begins small screams for a few seconds; if you don't kill it fast enough it emits a loud scream that spawns nearby Walkers — and possibly Runners and Primes.
  • Killed, it leaves a gas cloud for roughly 20 seconds around the body. Standing in it gives you a very high chance of being infected.
  • Zombies that walk through the cloud become more infectious — their hits carry a higher infection chance.
Kill the screamer first

In any mixed crowd, the Shambler is the priority target. One loud scream turns a manageable group into a horde with Runners. A fast headshot (or two heavy melee hits) before it finishes its scream chain is the whole game.

Primes — The Red-Eyed Elites

Primes are the super-powered tier: 130 HP, drenched in blood, glowing red eyes, and a ~100m detection radius — they notice you from absurd range and advance at a walker-fast pace you can't out-jog in hallways. The compass marks Primes when they're nearby, which is your only reliable early warning.

  • Firearms beat melee on Primes. Two headshots from a decent rifle or revolver put one down; a single big-caliber headshot can too. Melee is a losing trade — they don't stagger like walkers.
  • Never leave a Prime behind you. They're the classic "cleared the room, turned around, dead" killer, and they're most common on Nightmare.

Special Zombies: Firefighter, Riot Police & Construction

NMRIH2's armored dead are real-world occupations, and each has a defined weak point:

  • Firefighter — full turnout gear with a helmet (armored head, like Construction Workers) and an oxygen tank on the back. Shoot or slash the tank: it punctures with a high-pitched squeal, then explodes, killing any zombies standing too close — including the firefighter.
  • Riot Police (SWAT)full body armor and sometimes a riot shield that absorbs melee and bullets and blocks knockback. The shield can be broken by attacking the legs/feet — the shield drops and the zombie becomes much easier.
  • Construction Worker — armored helmet; don't waste headshots until the helmet's off. A leg cut or body shots work, or a rifle caliber that penetrates (the M14 explicitly "penetrates all helmet types").

All three can appear as Runners. The shield-and-helmet zombies are the reason the community's "leg meta" exists: cut the legs, then finish the crawler — it works on every armored type.

Crawlers — The Finish-Your-Kills Rule

Crawlers are zombies whose legs were severed — by you, or by another player's stray shot. Unlike the first game, NMRIH2 crawlers don't grab or bite; they swing their arms and are slow enough to jump over (jumping/vaulting costs no stamina). But they are not dead:

  • Downed infected take 100% bonus damage until they stand up again — the window to finish them cheaply.
  • Runner-derived crawlers crawl fast. A runner you leg-cut will keep coming at speed.
  • Always confirm kills before rotating. A pile of crawlers behind you is how quiet POIs turn into Runner piles.

How to Fight Each Type — Quick Reference

Type HP Priority Best response
Walker 100 Low Headshot or 2 heavy melee hits; cut legs only if you'll finish them
Runner 100 High Headshot; melee only with space; never let it grab from behind
Shambler 70 Highest Kill before the loud scream; avoid its death gas; treat as an infection hazard
Prime 130 High Compass marks it; 2 headshots; don't melee-trade; clear it before advancing
Firefighter 100 Medium Shoot the back-mounted oxygen tank — it explodes and clears the crowd
Riot Police 100 Medium Break the shield via legs/feet, then headshots
Construction 100 Medium Remove the helmet (or use penetrating rifle rounds) before headshots
Crawler Finish it +100% damage window on the ground; stomp it or headshot it before moving on
Leg meta, done safely

Cutting legs is the fastest way to neutralize armored types and hordes — but only if your squad finishes the crawlers. Two players on the legs, one on cleanup, is the pattern that wins tight hallways without wasting ammo. This pairs with the loadout choices in our loadout guide — bring a good sharp melee for exactly this job.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of zombies are in No More Room in Hell 2?

Walkers (standard), Runners (fast variants of most types), Shamblers (gas carriers), Primes (red-eyed elites), armored specials (Firefighter, Riot Police, Construction), and Crawlers created by dismemberment.

How much HP do zombies have?

Per the official 1.0 notes: normal Zombies 100 HP, Shamblers 70, Primes 130. Armored specials share the walker baseline but add helmet/armor/shield damage gates.

How do you kill a Prime zombie?

The compass marks Primes at range. Use firearms — two headshots from a decent rifle or revolver do the job, and one big-caliber headshot can one-tap them. Avoid melee trades; they don't stagger reliably.

What is a Shambler?

The decayed, gas-emitting zombie. It screams to summon Walkers/Runners/Primes if not killed fast, and its death leaves a gas cloud that heavily risks infecting anyone standing in it. Kill it first, always.

Are there special zombies?

Yes — Firefighter (explosive oxygen tank on the back), Riot Police (body armor, riot shield breakable via the legs), and Construction Worker (armored helmet). All can spawn as Runners.
