Cooking in DragonSword: Awakening — how to unlock it, every ingredient type, healing recipes, and why cooking is the only reliable heal.

DragonSword Awakening Cooking Guide — Recipes, Healing and Food Buffs

Cooking is the quiet backbone of DragonSword: Awakening. Meals are the only reliable way to heal your heroes — there's no potion shop and no passive regen worth relying on — and the right dishes also buff combat and enable deep-dive exploration. This guide covers how to unlock the system, what ingredients matter, and the recipes you'll actually use.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • How to unlock cooking (Anne's quest) and where to cook
  • Every ingredient type and the star-tier system
  • Healing recipes, including the documented early-game dishes
  • Stamina food — the key to underwater exploration

Unlocking Cooking: In Search of Ascension Mushroom

Cooking unlocks through a quest from Anne, the quest-giver you meet early in Orbis. The mission — "In Search of Ascension Mushroom" — sends you to meet Guard Bart outside the castle and find mushrooms to cook him a meal. Complete it and you learn the cooking system itself. It's short, it's early, and it's the single most important unlock in the opening hours — GameRant's cooking and healing guide calls the same quest out as the gateway to all healing.

Where you cook: campfires with pots and pans — usually at camps or outposts. You cannot cook from your inventory, and you cannot cook on the go.

Cook before entering a dungeon

Once you're inside a dungeon, there's no way to recharge meals. If you run out of healing food mid-dungeon, you're done. Treat every dungeon entry as "stock up first."

Ingredients and the Star-Tier System

The game has roughly ten ingredient categories: Meat, Fish, Seafood, Eggs, Vegetables, Mushrooms, Grains, Herbs, Natural Food, and Processed Food — each with star tiers. Higher-tier ingredients produce higher-tier meals with stronger effects.

Where to find them:

  • Fish — requires learning fishing
  • Meat — hunt enemies like boar
  • Eggs — find bird nests around the map
  • Everything else — gather while traveling; the "I'll collect it later" trap is real

The Documented Early Recipes

GameRant documents the opening healing dishes:

Recipe Ingredients Effect
Grilled Meat Grilled Meat (1x) Instantly restores ~950 HP
Roasted Vegetables Grilled Vegetable (1x) Restores 2% of max HP per second for 10 seconds
Stir-Fried Mushrooms & Vegetables Grilled Vegetables (2x) + Mushroom (1x) Restores 140 HP + 2.4% of max HP

Recipes unlock by mixing ingredients at the campfire — not by finding recipe books in the world. Experiment with combinations and the codex fills itself in. That's also how you find the stronger team-heal, revive, and combat-buff dishes: most meals are discovered by matching, not granted.

Stamina Food: The Key to Deep Dives

Some of the game's best secrets sit at the bottom of the ocean — far deeper than your stamina bar normally allows. Two dishes solve that:

Food Ingredients Effect
Egg Renew Eggs x3 Instantly restores 25% stamina
Assorted Rice Bowls Meat x1, Fish x1, Rice x1 Reduces stamina consumption while active

The documented deep-dive recipe (from the community's Vestment of the Great Spirit route): eat an Assorted Rice Bowl before diving, descend slowly (no dashing — it burns stamina), and sip Egg Renew when the bar gets low. A diving-capable Familiar helps too — see our Familiars guide and map guide for where those dives pay off.

Combat Buffs and Team Heals

Beyond healing, meals provide a spread of combat effects: attack power increases, defense buffs, increased rage gain, status-effect removal, and stamina-consumption reduction for your hero or Familiar. Some meals heal the whole team instead of just the active hero; others can resurrect a dead ally. Match the dish to the fight — raid night calls for different food than a dungeon crawl.

Stockpile ingredients constantly

The best dishes need high-tier ingredients, and ingredients are the most time-consuming part of cooking. Grab everything you pass while questing, and spend a few minutes on gathering routes between story pushes. See our farming guide for efficient routes.
