DragonSword Awakening Character Unlocks — Fate's Invitation

How to unlock every character in DragonSword: Awakening — every Fate's Invitation ticket source, the 8 story unlocks, and who to spend tickets on first.

How to Unlock Characters in DragonSword Awakening — Every Ticket Source

DragonSword: Awakening has no gacha — every one of the 19 launch heroes is earnable by playing. But "earnable" doesn't mean "handed to you": 11 heroes require Fate's Invitation tickets, and tickets are a finite resource you'll want to spend carefully. This guide covers every unlock path, every ticket source, and a sane spending order.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • The two unlock systems: story quests and the Exchange shop
  • Every Fate's Invitation source, with rough timing
  • The 8 story heroes and exactly where they join
  • Who to spend your first tickets on

The Two Unlock Systems

1. Story unlocks (8 heroes). Some heroes join automatically as you complete the main campaign — no tickets, no choice involved. These are effectively party members with narrative arcs.

2. Exchange unlocks (11 heroes). Everyone else unlocks in the Exchange menu (the scales-of-justice icon on the pause screen) using a Fate's Invitation. Crucially, you choose the character — there's no random pool, no pity system, no duplicates. Destructoid's unlock guide walks the exact menu path: pause → Exchange → pick hero → confirm.

Tickets are finite — treat them like a budget

Fate's Invitation is a limited currency with exactly one use. Spending it on a hero you bench is gone forever. The game gives you a healthy flow of tickets, but never enough to unlock everything on impulse — plan the roster before you spend.

Every Fate's Invitation Source

Source Reward Notes
Prologue completion 1 ticket ~15 minutes in; your very first ticket
Main story chapters 1 per chapter The most reliable ongoing source
Numbered mainline quests 1 per 10 quests Every 10th quest (e.g., #10, #20) gives a bonus ticket
Hero Quests 1 per quest Character-specific side stories that also grant exclusive Karma

The chapter reward is the backbone of the economy — finish a chapter, get a ticket, spend it on the hero your team needs next. Keengamer's full unlock guide confirms the same four sources with the same math.

The 8 Story-Unlock Heroes

Hero Unlock point
Lute Starting protagonist (Prologue)
Castella Chapter 1 — "To the Orbis Kingdom"
Aria "Mercenary Starting Today"
Johnny Main quest #10 — "A Temporary Alliance"
Ornette Main quest #20 — "The Hero's Quest"
Cerese Main quest #30 — "Those Left Behind"
Kalsion Main quest #40 — "Looming Crisis"
Othello Main quest #50 — "Individual Preparations"

Note that quest numbering and chapter numbering are different systems — "Main quest #50" is deep in the campaign. Othello is the last story unlock and one of the bigger narrative beats; see our story guide for context.

The 11 Exchange Heroes

These 11 cost one Fate's Invitation each, available from the moment you reach the Exchange regardless of story progress: Eileen, Reina, Astria, Roxy, Alex, Kalien, Dana, Theresia, Tarte, Sion, Charlotte.

Recommended first-ticket picks, per the tier list consensus:

  • Theresia — best all-around first unlock; chains with the free story heroes.
  • Dana — if you want a support-oriented team from the start.
  • Charlotte — if you're confident with aggressive switching.
  • Roxy — if you want a ranged carry for bleed teams.
Test before you spend

You can preview any hero in the Exchange menu — stats, voice, skills, and Awakening info — via the magnifying-glass icon. Use it. A hero who looks great in a tier list can feel wrong in your hands, and tickets don't come back.

Can You Unlock Everything?

Yes — 100% of the roster is obtainable with the tickets the game gives you. There are no paid-only heroes. The only paid content is cosmetic: Familiars and costumes sold as DLC on the Steam store. The four post-launch heroes (Ryza, Jerome, Veronica, Logan) are also free — see the roadmap guide.

Official source: DragonSword: Awakening Steam page — the store description confirms "Each of the 19 Heroes possesses distinct Status Ailment abilities" and that all heroes and core content are "earned through story progression and exploration."
