All 19 DragonSword: Awakening heroes: every roster member's element, role, and how they play, plus the 8 story unlocks and 11 Fate's Invitation picks.
DragonSword Awakening Characters — Full 19-Hero Roster Explained
Every hero in DragonSword: Awakening is earnable without spending money — that's the game's whole pitch — but the 19 launch characters play very differently. This guide lists the full roster, explains the element/status system each hero plugs into, and tells you who comes free from the story versus who costs a Fate's Invitation ticket.
Here's what you'll learn:
- All 19 launch heroes with their role and status specialty
- The 8 story-unlock heroes and where they join
- The 11 Exchange heroes and what they bring
- How the status-ailment families shape team building
- Which heroes are coming post-launch

| Dana | Summon support | Chills — summons a frost golem |

The Eight Story-Unlock Heroes
Eight heroes join automatically through the main campaign — no tickets needed:
| Hero | Unlock quest |
|---|---|
| Lute | Starting protagonist (Prologue) |
| Castella | Chapter 1 — "To the Orbis Kingdom" |
| Aria | "Mercenary Starting Today" |
| Johnny | Main quest #10 — "A Temporary Alliance" |
| Ornette | Main quest #20 — "The Hero's Quest" |
| Cerese | Main quest #30 — "Those Left Behind" |
| Kalsion | Main quest #40 — "Looming Crisis" |
| Othello | Main quest #50 — "Individual Preparations" |
These aren't just roster filler — several carry exclusive Karma weapons from their story moments, and Othello's unlock (deep in the campaign) is one of the game's bigger story beats. Full details in our character unlock guide.
The Eleven Exchange Heroes
The other 11 — Eileen, Reina, Astria, Roxy, Alex, Kalien, Dana, Theresia, Tarte, Sion, and Charlotte — unlock through Fate's Invitation tickets in the Exchange menu, and you choose exactly who you get. No random pool, no duplicate protection math.
The standouts by role:
- Theresia — the meta's favorite connector: bleed/stun application plus Signal Skills that chain into almost any team.
- Dana — summon-based support; community guides call her the safest endgame investment.
- Charlotte — multi-ailment DPS for aggressive players; poison, airborne, and knockdown in one kit.
- Roxy — the ranged bleed carry; strong in bleed teams, less combo-y than S-tier picks.
- Alex — the dedicated tank with knockdown; useful if you want a front-line anchor.
- Kalien — easy-to-learn burn mage; outshone by better Burn specialists later.
Who to unlock first depends on your carry preference — we rank the options in our tier list and best teams guide.
Because Signal Skills light up for benched characters, teams that cover different status families chain longer than teams of three big damage dealers. A Bleed hero + a Shock hero + an all-rounder will out-combo three copies of the same role.
How the Nine Status Families Work
Every hero maps to one of the game's nine status-ailment families, and stacking those statuses is the entire combat loop:
- Hemorrhage (Bleed) — Roxy's family; sustained damage over time.
- Prominence (Burn) — fire damage over time with stun potential (Kalien, Kalsion, Aria).
- Turbidity — poison-style pressure and knockdown setups (Johnny, Charlotte).
- Chills (Frost) — freezing and crowd control (Dana, Cerese, Othello).
- Thunderstroke (Shock) — stun and knockdown chains (Ornette, Sion, Tarte).
- Gust — airborne juggling (Reina, Eileen).
- Destruction — raw breaking power (Castella, Astria).
- Amplitude — burst amplifiers (Lute, Theresia).
- Crushing — knock-down and guarding (Alex).
Stack a family with Active Skills, fill the enemy's gauge, and Signal Skills trigger — including for heroes still on the bench. That's the switching loop explained in our combat guide.
Post-Launch Heroes
Hound13's roadmap confirms four free heroes for the second half of 2026: Ryza (spear-throwing shock specialist who teleports to her thrown spear), Jerome (greatsword knockdown specialist with a three-stage grab), Veronica (bare-fist martial arts plus a gun), and Logan (shield tank). They're free additions to the base game — see our roadmap guide for timing.
