Doloc Town Vertical Farm Design: Layouts, Platforms & Building Ideas

Doloc Town is a side-scrolling farming sim, which means your farm grows up, not out. You don't till fields — you stack planters on platforms, climb between floors, and eventually run a tower of crops, machines and buildings. Design isn't decoration here: a badly planned vertical farm wastes your scarcest resources (time and walkable space), while a good one puts fast crops at your feet, slow crops on the skyline, and keeps your machines within reach of power. This guide covers the building system, the design principles that matter, and concrete layout ideas you can copy.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • How platforms and planters actually work in the building system
  • The design rules that make a vertical farm efficient, not just tall
  • Weather-proofing per floor (coverings, lightning rods, indoor options)
  • Copyable layout concepts, including the community's 15-tile design math
  • How farm expansion works in 1.0 (final tier + two extra territories)

How Vertical Farming Works in Doloc Town

The official pitch is literal: "Stack platforms freely across your farm and build your home upwards, level by level. Climb and jump as you craft extra space for farming, survival and creativity alike." Mechanically:

  • Planters (plant basins) are placed on platforms instead of tilled soil — the ground is contaminated, so everything grows in reclaimed containers.
  • Platforms stack vertically; you climb between tiers with jumps (double jump after joining the Guild — see the progression guide).
  • Basin types matter: Wood, Shrub, Vine, Cardboard, Tire, Fungus, Metal, Foam — each unlocked via the Agriculture tree and matched to crop types (vines need Vine basins, fungus needs Fungus basins, etc.).
  • The Vertical Frame technology (Tree Planting, 4 Field Study + 1 Tool Operation) unlocks tree cultivation on the structure.
Think in floors, not tiles

Each horizontal platform slice is a floor you walk, water and harvest. Fast-turnover crops (lettuce, radishes, herbs — a few days) belong on low floors you pass constantly; slow crops (melons, grain, Agave's 20-day cycle) belong on dedicated tiers you visit rarely. Community layout guides for Doloc Town consistently preach this "fast below, slow above" rule — the crop rotation guide tells you which crops are which.

Vertical Farm Design Principles That Actually Matter

Skip the pretty-tower instinct until the basics are right:

  1. Weather proofing per floor. Acid rain and heatwaves hit outdoor platforms. Plastic coverings protect key planters; the Rainy season demands them or the Keratinized gene (see the gene build guide). Indoor space (tents, shipping containers, greenhouse, polytunnel) is weather-immune — a covered tier is a safe tier.
  2. Power placement. Generators and lightning rods want to be central, not buried. Community automation guides warn that a solar/wind cluster placed far from the planting grid forces a full rewire later — every device pulls from the same power pool. See the automation guide.
  3. Leave walkway gaps. Drones path between platforms; cramped single-file rows slow them. If you automate, design for drone traffic from day one — retrofitting is painful.
  4. Machines on their own floors. Ore smelters, the Resin Press, gene machines and cooking stations each have footprints and, often, power needs. Give Industry its own tier so crops and machines don't fight for floor space.
  5. Storage near the action. Cardboard boxes (5 slots each, auto-collect assigned resources) and later Storage Shelves/Large Wooden Cases should sit beside the harvest floor, not the far end of the tower.
Buildings are not just cosmetic

Tents and shipping containers aren't decoration — they create protected interior space and, per the 1.0 patch notes, changes to buildable areas inside tents have shipped in hotfixes (1.00.03 fixed planters removed from tents). Plan which floors get buildings before you stack, because reorganizing a container tower is expensive.

Copyable Layout Ideas

Real layouts that work in the side-scrolling space (community-tested concepts, sizes approximate):

  • The Production Spine — one central column: ground floor = smelter + generator + batteries; mid floors = planters; top floor = gene machines + seed compressor. Everything reachable in one climb.
  • The Weather Tower — lower floors covered (plastic or indoor) for Rainy-season staples; upper open floors for Dry-season sun-lovers; lightning rod on the apex.
  • The 15-Tile Stack — a widely shared community template packs three tower sections at 15 tiles high each: e.g. Big Barn (9) + Power Compartment (6), Cellar (2) + Big Container (8) + Polytunnel (5), or Greenhouse (7) + Big Container (8). Same height, different functions — stack them as separate columns so each has its own footprint.
  • The Greenhouse Wing — the greenhouse (unlocked via the Treaty Port faction quest line) is season-independent and has no build limit reported; a dedicated greenhouse tier keeps your gene-bred money crops running through every season.

One structural trick from player guides: buildings can slightly overlap on their right side, which squeezes more into less space — useful for packing containers around a power hub, but test the clearance before committing.

Farm Expansion in 1.0: How Big Can You Go?

The 1.0 release added the expansion endgame:

  • Final Farm Expansion — the main farm's largest, final upgrade tier.
  • Two additional farming territories in different world areas (the Wetland Farm was previewed pre-launch). Territories support automation if you bring power infrastructure — solar/wind on exposed annex platforms, batteries near export chests.
  • Clearing costs: player reports cite ~25,000 G to clear debris for the farm's left exit (opens a faster loop to water sources and the swamp), and a 20,000 G drone tool that can relocate whole buildings (holding up to 16).

Per the official 1.0 announcement, the release includes the "Final Farm Expansion & New Farming Territories: upgrade your main farm to its largest and final expansion level, or grow beyond it with two additional farming territories." Build your master design around that ceiling — three territories, one plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I build a vertical farm in Doloc Town?

Place plant basins on stacked platforms instead of tilled soil. Unlock basin types (Wood → Shrub → Vine → Cardboard → Tire → Fungus → Metal → Foam) in the Agriculture tech tree, and the Vertical Frame tech for trees. Design in floors: fast crops low, slow crops high.

What is the best vertical farm layout in Doloc Town?

The Production Spine: power + smelter on the ground floor, planters mid, gene machines and seed compressor on top, storage beside the harvest floor. Leave walkway gaps for drones and keep weather-proofing per floor (covers or indoor space).

How do platforms work in Doloc Town?

Platforms are horizontal buildable slices you stack and climb. Buildings (tents, shipping containers) and planters go on them; weather affects outdoor platforms unless covered or indoors.

Can you stack buildings in Doloc Town?

Yes — containers and tents stack, and buildings can slightly overlap on their right side to save space. Buildings create weather-safe interior floors.

How big can your farm get in Doloc Town?

1.0 adds the final main-farm expansion tier plus two additional farming territories elsewhere in the world, for a three-site endgame. See the best farm layout guide for the efficiency-focused companion to this design guide.
