Conan Exiles Raise Horses Guide: Taming, Breeding & Saddles

Horses are the default mount of Conan Exiles — pack animals, combat mounts and the fastest way to cross the Exiled Lands before the obelisk network. Getting one is a mini-economy of its own: find a foal in the wild (level 15+), carry it home, raise it in a Stable, and craft a saddle to ride it (level 20+). This guide covers the whole process — where foals spawn, how raising works, what to feed them, and how horses compare to the camels and rhinos the later updates added.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • The exact taming process: foal → Stable → horse
  • Where foals spawn (with map grids)
  • Feeding and growth: what makes a foal grow fastest
  • Saddles and riding requirements
  • Horses vs camels vs rhinos (and why "raise horses" queries are usually about this)

How to Tame a Horse: Foal to Stable to Mount

The horse taming loop has four steps, and the level gates matter:

  1. Reach level 15 and unlock Stablemaster — the knowledge that lets you tame foals. You also need the Saddler knowledge (Saddle-maker) for the riding gear.
  2. Find a foal — foals roam in specific regions (below). Approach and press E to pick the foal up into your inventory. It's a heavy item (weight 50), so don't plan on sprinting home.
  3. Build a Stable (learned from Stablemaster) — a Carpenter's Workbench crafts it. One stable raises one foal; multiple horses need multiple stables. Place the foal inside.
  4. Feed it and wait — transfer food into the stable's inventory. The foal grows into a horse automatically over time; the food you provide sets the growth speed and, at maturity, can influence stats and coat color.

Per the official Foal (Pet) wiki page, foals "can be tamed at Level 15," come in three variants (Foal, Swift Foal, Sturdy Foal), and "the type of foal raised does not currently have any meaningful effect on the type of horse produced" — the mature horse's variant is determined at growth, not by the foal you caught.

Feed Asura's Glory for fastest growth

The foal grows fastest when fed Asura's Glory, the premium horse feed. Plant fiber works but is slow. At max level, Asura's Glory also grants an extra health buff — the community's standard endgame horse food. Tainted Fodder or Sorcerous Pet Food can transform a standard foal into a black or white horse before it matures.

Where to Find Horse Foals

Foal spawns were moved after the mount system update — they're no longer along the southern starting river. The confirmed current locations:

  • Past the Pitfall Pass — grids K5 and K6, a variety of foals
  • The Northern Aqueduct — northeast and southeast of the massive aqueduct
  • Circle of Swords — grids B10 and C10, a chance of foals

The Horse wiki page confirms foals come in three wild variants (regular, swift, sturdy), all showing the same Dunn color pattern — which is not indicative of the mature horse's coat. If you want a specific color, you breed and feed for it, or use the Tainted Fodder/Sorcerous Pet Food transformation.

Raising and Leveling Your Horse

Once the foal matures into a horse, it's a follower-class pet with real stats (a base horse carries 993 health and 53 armor per the wiki's pet infobox), and it levels like any follower:

  • Horses level up from combat experience — take them into fights (carefully, early on) or on long expeditions.
  • Food drives stat growth — what's in the horse's inventory when it levels determines which attributes improve; health is the priority, and Asura's Glory gives an additional health buff at max level.
  • Horses die permanently — no respawn. Early on, keep them out of fights entirely; a horse dragged down a cliff takes fall damage, and low-stamina riders can be thrown.
  • Mounts don't count toward your companion limit — you can have one follower and a mount. You can also rename them freely.

To actually ride: craft a saddle at a Saddler's Worktable (learned from the Saddler knowledge) and equip it to the mount. The simple saddle unlocks at level 20 (45 Iron Ingots, 50 Leather, 20 Thread); better saddles unlock at levels 40 and 60 and improve speed, stamina and resilience. Saddles come in many cosmetic styles, and the Age of War era added saddle dyeing.

Horse first aid 101

New riders lose horses to three things: fights (they engage hostiles near you), falls (cliff drags), and stamina exhaustion (they flee combat when stamina runs low). Rule of thumb: don't ride into a fight until the horse is level 30+, and walk (dismount) down steep terrain.

Horses vs Camels vs Rhinos: Which Mount?

The mount roster grew over the years, and each type trades off differently:

Mount Where Strengths Weaknesses
Horse Exiled Lands (foals in the north) Fastest all-rounder; easy to raise; the default Dies in combat if not leveled; stamina-limited
Camel Age of War Ch. 3 (tamed like horses) 2x the storage of a horse, same combat speed Slower feel in fights; desert-appropriate
Rhino Isle of Siptah (baby rhinos in Animal Pen) Tough; fights nearby hostiles Tankier but slower; Siptah-only base spawns
Demonic mounts Age of Sorcery (Circle of Power summon) Powerful stats Turn hostile after a timer — never leave them in base

For pure logistics, camels win (2x storage at equal speed). For combat support, a leveled rhino is a wall. For everything else — speed, ease, and the classic look — the horse is still the right answer, and it's the only mount you can raise entirely from a foal with zero dungeon or DLC dependency. If you're planning base logistics around mounts, our resource locations guide has the hauling routes, and the thralls guide covers follower rules for the rest of your squad.

FAQ

How do I tame a horse in Conan Exiles? Reach level 15 and unlock Stablemaster, find a foal in the wild, pick it up (E), build a Stable, place the foal inside and feed it. It grows into a horse over time; you then craft a saddle (level 20+) at a Saddler's Worktable to ride it.

Where can I find horse foals? Past the Pitfall Pass (grids K5/K6), around the Northern Aqueduct, and at Circle of Swords (grids B10/C10). Foals no longer spawn near the southern starting river — the spawns were moved after the mount system update.

How long does it take to raise a foal into a horse? It depends on feed. Plant fiber is slow; Asura's Glory grows it fastest. The foal matures automatically once fed, so stock the stable generously if you want speed.

What do I need to ride a horse? A saddle equipped on the mount — craftable at a Saddler's Worktable (Saddler knowledge). The simple saddle unlocks at level 20 (45 Iron Ingots, 50 Leather, 20 Thread); improved saddles at 40 and 60 boost speed, stamina and resilience.

Are horses better than camels or rhinos? Horses are the fastest all-rounder and easiest to raise. Camels double the storage at equal combat speed (Age of War Ch. 3). Rhinos are tougher combat mounts but slower and Siptah-focused. Demonic mounts (Age of Sorcery) are powerful but turn hostile on a timer.
