Conan Exiles Gameplay Guide: How the Game Works in 2026

Conan Exiles is an open-world survival sandbox set in the Hyborian Age: you wake naked on a cross, and everything after that — water, food, shelter, weapons, thralls, a fortress — is yours to make. In 2026 the game is better than it has ever been, because the free Conan Exiles Enhanced UE5 relaunch (May 5, 2026) modernised the visuals and permanently connected the two maps, and the Legacy of the Giant-Kings update cycle (Part One arrived July 21, 2026) finally added the long-requested Legendary repair system. If you are new and searching for what the gameplay actually is, this is the complete picture: the survival loop, combat, building, the follower systems, the modes, and what the 2026 builds changed.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • The core survival loop: gather, craft, build, conquer — and the bracelet quest that ends it
  • Combat: stamina-driven melee combos, blocking, dodging, and why it is more like a fighting game than a hack-and-slash
  • Character creation: the six attributes, backgrounds, races, and the religion choice you make before you spawn
  • The follower ladder: thralls, pets, golems, companions and mounts
  • Solo, co-op, official servers and private servers — which mode for which player
  • What Conan Exiles Enhanced and Legacy of the Giant-Kings actually changed
  • The adult content settings (no, partial or full nudity), and what that means for you

The Survival Loop: What You Actually Do

Conan Exiles puts you in the Exiled Lands (75 km² of desert, highlands, jungle, tundra and volcano) with a bracelet fused to your wrist and a simple premise: survive. The loop is the same one the genre popularised, but with a distinctly Conan flavour:

  1. Gather — chop trees, mine rock and iron, skin animals, pick plants. Tools matter: a pickaxe pulls stone, ore and bark; a hatchet pulls wood and hide.
  2. Craft — turn raw materials into gear at workstations: furnaces for metal, a carpenter's bench for wood and bows, a tannery for leather, an alchemist's bench for everything arcane.
  3. Build — place a foundation, claim a plot, and grow from a sandstone shack to a tier-3 fortress. Building is fully sandboxed: if you can place a piece, you can build with it.
  4. Conquer — recruit thralls, tame animals, and use them to raid camps, dungeons, bosses, or (on PvP servers) other players' bases.

Survival itself is a constant background tax. Your Thirst, Hunger and Temperature meters drain in real time; water sources are finite and polluted in places, food rots, and the northern tundra will freeze you to death in cloth. Early game is dominated by managing those three meters while punching shalebacks to death with your fists.

The deeper objective, if you want one, is the bracelet quest: defeat the game's bosses, collect the pieces of the Keystone, and ultimately remove the bracelet at the Gate of the Necromancer to "finish" the game. Most players treat it as a soft goal and the sandbox as the real game. For the fast-travel and farming side of the sandbox, our interactive map guide covers the obelisk network and every resource route.

Per the official Conan Exiles Enhanced announcement, the Enhanced build is "a massive free upgrade" that launched on the game's 8th anniversary, with "significantly improved visuals, enhanced performance", and for the first time connecting the Exiled Lands with the Isle of Siptah into one playable world.

Combat: Stamina-Driven, Not Stats-Driven

Combat in Conan Exiles is the system that most surprises new players. There are no skill trees for weapon types and no cooldowns — instead, every weapon family (one-handed sword, two-handed sword, axes, maces, spears, daggers, bows) has its own light/heavy combo chain, and stamina is the entire economy of a fight:

  • Light attacks are fast and cheap; heavy attacks hit harder but commit you.
  • Blocking costs stamina and a shield or a one-handed weapon; perfect timing matters more than raw armour.
  • Rolling/dodging i-frames through attacks is the core defensive skill — heavy armour gives protection but slows your roll.
  • Limb damage: enough damage to a limb dismembers NPCs (and your character can lose limbs too), a gore system the game is famous for.
  • Armour penetration matters against high-armour targets; weapons like the star metal greatsword excel at it.

The meta lesson: a naked player with good stamina management can beat a full-armour player who wastes theirs. That's why the Enhanced era combat guides (including ours on the best weapon for golems) are all written around the same idea — weapon choice is about match-ups, not a "best sword" line.

Character Creation: Races, Attributes and the Religion Choice

Before you spawn you make three decisions that shape your entire run:

  • Race — the creation screen offers the peoples of the Hyborian Age: Aquilonian, Cimmerian, Darfari, Hyborian, Hyrkanian, Khitan, Kushite, Nordheimer, Pict, Shemite, Stygian, Turanian, Vendhyan, Yamatai, Zamorian, Zingaran and more. Races are purely cosmetic — the official wiki is explicit that they have no effect on gameplay, so pick the one that looks right to you.
  • Background — a light flavour pick (soldier, slave, noble...) that influences your starting look.
  • Religion — the only genuinely mechanical early choice. You worship one god at creation (Crom, Mitra, Set, Yog, Ymir, Derketo or Jhebbal Sag on the Exiled Lands; Zath is a Siptah addition), which grants you that religion's altar and recipes. You can learn the others later via trainers. The full breakdown is in our religion guide.

Your character has six attributes: Strength (melee damage and carry), Agility (light-armour damage, bow damage), Vitality (health), Grit (stamina), Authority (follower damage and control), and Expertise (harvesting yields and carry weight). Attribute points come from level-ups (max level 60), and feat points unlock the knowledge tree — crafting stations, building tiers and weapons. Since the feat cap is tight, endgame players spend extra Fragments of Power to bypass it, which we cover in the sorcery guide.

The Follower Ladder: Thralls, Pets, Golems, Companions, Mounts

Conan Exiles is not a solo-only game — your army is a core part of the sandbox, and there's a clear ladder of how you get one:

  1. Thralls — captured NPCs, knocked out with a truncheon, bound and converted on the Wheel of Pain. Tiers 1–4, with tier 4 being named masters that supercharge your workstations or fight beside you. The full capture system is in our thralls guide.
  2. Pets — baby animals (wolves, bears, sabretooths, rocknoses, shalebacks) raised in an Animal Pen from eggs or captured offspring.
  3. Golems — craftable sorcerous followers built from parts at the Guardian Assembly Station: no leveling, huge health pool, hard-hitting but slow. See the golem section of our best weapon for golems guide.
  4. Companions — story NPCs like Freya and Liu Fei who join you after completing their quest lines (added in the Age of Heroes update).
  5. Mounts — horses (the default) and rhinos (requires the Isle of Siptah DLC for the saddle). Bears are not rideable — a disappointment the community has been asking about for years; the details are in our horse locations & mounts guide.

Follower cap on official servers: 50 per player + 15 per clan member (soft cap), with a hard cap of 225 for a five-man clan.

Game Modes: Solo, Co-op, Official and Private Servers

Mode What it is Best for
Single-player / Co-op Your own world, up to a handful of friends via invite; full admin panel access Learning the game, builders, offline play
Official servers Funcom-hosted PvE, PvP or PvE-Conflict with default rules The "authentic" shared-world experience, server wipes included
Private / dedicated servers Player-run servers with custom rates, mods, RP and rules Modded play, RP communities, clans that want control

Private servers are where the mod scene lives — mods are blocked on official servers entirely. If you want to run one, our dedicated server guide walks through setup, and our best mods guide covers what to install on top.

What the 2026 Enhanced Era Changed

Two events in 2026 permanently changed the game, and both matter for how you play today:

Conan Exiles Enhanced (May 5, 2026) — a free Unreal Engine 5 upgrade developed with Inflexion Games. Better lighting, LODs, foliage and performance on modern GPUs; the engine moved from UE4.16 to UE5.6.1, which broke every existing mod (old UE4 mods are now tagged "Legacy" on the Workshop and crash the game). It also connected the Exiled Lands and Isle of Siptah into a single world for the first time — you can now travel between them via the obelisk/Map Room network.

Legacy of the Giant-Kings (July 21, 2026 onward) — a free four-part story arc. Part One added the Cyclopean Halls dungeon beneath the Unnamed City, the Legendary Repair system (repair legendary gear with Legendary Fragments instead of letting it break forever), 10 save slots (up from 5), and 10 extra inventory slots (210 total). Part Two-plus and 2.1.0 were in Public Beta as of August 11, 2026.

The Legendary Repair change is the 2026 headline

Before 2.0.0, legendary weapons and armour had fixed durability and eventually broke permanently — the #1 endgame complaint for years. The Legendary Repair system in the Cyclopean Halls lets you restore them, which completely changed endgame gear planning. Farm Legendary Fragments in the dungeon, then repair your best drops instead of hoarding them.

Is Conan Exiles Worth Playing in 2026?

Short answer: yes — if the survival-sandbox genre is for you. The Enhanced relaunch brought the concurrent player count back into five figures (monthly averages around 48k in May 2026 vs ~10k the previous year; we track the numbers in our player count & Steam charts guide), the mod scene rebuilt on the new devkit, and Funcom is shipping scheduled content again after a year of stability work. The honest caveats: the game is eight years old under the new paint, the UI remains clunky, PvE-C balance is still a work in progress, and on official servers your progress lives on borrowed time between wipes. If you want a sandbox you can sink hundreds of hours into solo or with a clan, it's the strongest the game has ever been.

FAQ

How does Conan Exiles gameplay work? It's a survival sandbox: you manage thirst, hunger and temperature while gathering resources, crafting gear and building a base, then recruit thralls and tame animals to conquer dungeons, bosses and other players. Level up to 60 by earning XP from crafting and combat, unlock the knowledge tree with feat points, and optionally complete the bracelet quest to "finish" the game.

Does Conan Exiles have nudity? Yes, as a setting, not a mechanic. The game ships with an adult content toggle offering no, partial or full nudity, adjustable in the settings and selectable in both single and multiplayer — this is the official content descriptor on the Steam store page. It's one of the reasons Conan Exiles carries a Mature/18+ rating.

Are races in Conan Exiles cosmetic? Yes. All races (Cimmerian, Stygian, Nordheimer, Khitan and the rest) are purely cosmetic per the official wiki's Thrall page — no stat differences. Your mechanical early choices are the religion you pick and the background you choose.

What platforms can I play Conan Exiles on? The base game is on PC (Steam), PlayStation 4/5 and Xbox One/Series X|S. The Enhanced UE5 upgrade and the Legacy of the Giant-Kings content launched on PC first — as of August 2026, the new content requires the PC version.

Is Conan Exiles still worth playing in 2026? Yes. The Enhanced relaunch modernised the visuals, reconnected the two maps, revived the player base, and the Legacy of the Giant-Kings cycle added the Legendary Repair system that fixes the endgame's biggest long-running complaint. It remains one of the deepest survival sandboxes on the market.
