Conan Exiles Enhanced Guide: The Free UE5 Upgrade Explained

Conan Exiles Enhanced is a free Unreal Engine 5 upgrade that launched May 5, 2026 on the game's 8th anniversary, developed in collaboration with Inflexion Games (the studio behind Nightingale). It's the biggest technical change in the game's history: a full engine upgrade from UE4 to UE5, the Exiled Lands and Isle of Siptah merged into one seamless world, a revamped UI, and an 80 GB smaller install — delivered free to everyone who owns the game. It also split the player base into Enhanced (UE5) and Legacy (UE4) builds, which is the first thing every returning player needs to understand.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • What Enhanced actually is, who made it, and when it launched
  • Every major change: engine, merged maps, UI, QoL, performance
  • Enhanced vs Legacy: which version should you run?
  • The 2026 patch history and the new Giant-Kings content
  • How the sorcery quest line works in the Enhanced world

What Conan Exiles Enhanced Is

Conan Exiles Enhanced is not a sequel and not a paid edition — it's a free visual and technical overhaul of the existing game. Announced April 23, 2026, it shipped May 5, 2026 (the 8th anniversary of the May 2018 release) as a separate UE5 edition, with the original UE4 build kept alongside as Conan Exiles Legacy for players who want it.

Per the official Conan Exiles Enhanced announcement from April 23, 2026, the upgrade brings "eight years of incredible content into a fully modernized experience, featuring dramatically improved visuals, enhanced performance, and cutting-edge rendering technology powered by Unreal Engine 5" — developed in collaboration with Inflexion Games.

The engine jump is the headline: UE5 brings Lumen global illumination (dynamic real-time lighting), Nanite geometry, and Virtual Shadow Maps — the same rendering stack used by UE5-native titles. The official announcement promised smoother 60+ FPS gameplay across all graphical presets on a wider range of hardware, and the install shrank by roughly 80 GB compared to the Legacy build.

Every Major Change in Enhanced

The feature list from the official announcement and launch coverage:

  • Merged worlds — the Isle of Siptah was physically merged into the Exiled Lands; both maps run on one server and you can travel between them freely (see our map 2026 guide).
  • Multiple characters per account — the long-requested ability to create more than one character on a single account.
  • Revamped UI — cleaner menus and improved navigation.
  • Smarter crafting — crafting now pulls ingredients from nearby storage and follower inventories instead of requiring everything in your own inventory.
  • Expanded character customization — including an enhanced "endowment" slider.
  • Day-one mod support — several popular mods were ready at launch through Funcom's work with the modding community; the Mod Dev Kit was refreshed for UE5 (see our mods guide).
  • Performance and stability work — improved loading times and multiplayer performance, per G-Portal's and Host Havoc's launch-day server guides (G-Portal Enhanced guide).

Funcom's own numbers around launch: 15 million players, 45 major updates, 69 km² of land across 13 biomes and 23 dungeons, 24 building sets, 1,075 building pieces, 1,731 armor pieces and 1,350 weapons across the eight-year content stack.

Enhanced vs Legacy: Which Should You Run?

The split is the single most confusing thing about 2026 Conan Exiles, so here's the decision framework:

  • Enhanced (UE5) — the new default: better visuals, merged maps, active development. All official PC servers migrated to Enhanced on May 4, 2026 (15:00 UTC), and there is no way back for characters on those servers.
  • Legacy (UE4) — the original build, selectable from the launcher. Still playable, but: no additional updates, no official servers, no Bazaar access, no crossplay with Enhanced. Its main audience is communities whose mod stacks haven't been ported yet, and console players (PS4/PS5, Xbox) who remain on Legacy entirely.

The official Enhanced FAQ thread on the Funcom forums covers the migration details: save files carry over, Exiled Lands bases were preserved, but Isle of Siptah bases could not be preserved because the island's coordinates changed — Funcom recommended dismantling and storing materials before the transition.

The May 4 deadline was real

Official-server characters left in place on May 4, 2026 at 15:00 UTC were permanently migrated to Enhanced — no revert. If you were on an official server, the choice was made for you on that date. Private servers chose their own timelines.

Consoles: Enhanced launched PC-first. Funcom said there are "no current plans" for Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, Xbox and PlayStation versions, while "considering" them later — no committed timeline (see our crossplay guide for the platform breakdown).

The 2026 Patch History

Enhanced has shipped on a fast cadence since May, and every patch touched the community:

  • May 13, 2026 — Hotfix 1.0.3 (launcher, BattlEye on Steam Deck, legacy server upgrades)
  • May 19, 2026 — Patch 1.1.0 (server browser performance, saved filters, ping accuracy, saddle dyeing, exploit fixes)
  • June 2026 — Patch 1.2.0, released then reverted after introducing a collision bug that caused item loss on dedicated servers and a named-thrall nerf; Hotfix 1.2.1 reintroduced the changes with fixes
  • July 2026 — Patch 1.3.0, then 2.0.0 "Legacy of the Giant-Kings — Part One": the new Cyclopean Halls dungeon beneath the Unnamed City and the Legendary Repair System, opening a four-part story arc
  • August 11, 2026 — Patch 2.1.0 entered Public Beta on the test client

The Giant-Kings arc is the current content wave — a four-part storyline announced June 30, 2026, with Part One (2.0.0) out July 21. For the update cadence and what it means for mods, see our unofficial patch guide.

The Sorcery Quest Line (Still the Best Content in the Game)

The Age of Sorcery (update 3.0, September 1, 2022) introduced the game's deepest optional system, and it's fully present in Enhanced. The starting quest, which "Wings of Valkyrie"-style queries usually circle around, works like this:

  1. Loot a Dead Sorcerer's Map from any defeated sorcerer.
  2. Follow the map to Shaleback Hollow in the Exiled Lands (TeleportPlayer -117949 167080 -13503) or the cave beneath Riverwatch Keep on the Isle of Siptah.
  3. At the end of the cave you'll find a plateau with books and a Thaumaturgy Bench. Interact with the Book on the Table to learn Basic Sorcery and your first spells.

Per the official Sorcery wiki page, the sorcery system arrived with the free 3.0 update on September 1, 2022 on PC, PS4 and Xbox — and the map piece leads to Shaleback Hollow (Exiled Lands) or the cave under Riverwatch Keep (Isle of Siptah), where the Book on the Table teaches Basic Sorcery and the first two spells.

Sorcery is risk-laden by design: casting raises Corruption, which drains your stats until cleansed (Performers cleanse it). In the Enhanced world the system connects to the Legendary Repair System — the new 2.0.0 repair mechanics use eldarium and other sorcery-adjacent materials, so learning sorcery is now part of the endgame repair loop.
