Remnant 2 Bulwark — How Damage Reduction Stacks Work

Remnant 2 Bulwark explained: damage reduction per stack, the 5-stack cap, every ring and skill that grants Bulwark, and how it stacks with armor.

Remnant 2 Bulwark — Damage Reduction Stacks Explained

Bulwark is a stacking damage-reduction buff in Remnant 2 that goes up to 5 stacks (6 with a specific ring), worth 7% damage reduction on the first stack and 25% at the full 5-stack cap. It shows up as a shield icon under your health bar, stacks from multiple sources at once, and combines multiplicatively with armor and other damage reduction. Since total damage reduction is hard-capped at 80%, Bulwark is the standard way tank builds actually reach that ceiling. This guide covers the exact numbers, every source of the buff, and the best ways to keep it permanently active.

Bulwark's Scaling Table (Exact Numbers)

Each stack gives less than the last — the first is the strongest:

Stacks Damage Reduction
1 7%
2 13% (+6%)
3 18% (+5%)
4 22% (+4%)
5 25% (+3%)
6* 27% (+2%)

* The 6th stack is only possible while wearing the Thalos Eyelet ring (from The Forgotten Kingdom DLC).

Per the Remnant 2 Wiki — Bulwark: "It can stack up to five times, with diminishing returns per stack, and combines multiplicatively with other forms of damage reduction."

Two numbers define the whole mechanic: the buff's 25% at 5 stacks, and the game's 80% total damage-reduction cap (armor DR and buff DR all count toward it). That 80% ceiling is why you rarely want to stack Bulwark blindly — once your armor already gives, say, 70% DR, only three stacks of Bulwark are useful before you start wasting the buff.

How Bulwark Combines With Armor

Bulwark is multiplicative with armor DR, not additive: the formula is damage taken = incoming × (1 − armor DR) × (1 − Bulwark DR) × (1 − other flat DR). In practice, this means Bulwark is most valuable on builds with moderate armor — it widens the gap between "heavy armor only" and "heavy armor plus capped Bulwark." Full armor math, weight classes and the exact DR formula are in our armor sets guide.

(Effects marked "on..." vary by trigger — relic use, perfect dodge, kill, or proximity. Check the item's full description in-game for the exact trigger.)

Skills and Perks

  • Juggernaut (Challenger skill) — grants 3 stacks of Bulwark for 25 seconds, plus +15% movement/melee speed, +50% melee damage and reduced stamina cost.
  • Die Hard (Challenger prime perk) — after cheating death, grants temporary invulnerability and Bulwark.
  • Face of Danger (Challenger relic perk) — Bulwark on relic use.

The Challenger is effectively the Bulwark class; details on its kit are in our archetypes guide.

The infinite-Bulwark combo

Equip Atonement Fold (which permanently bleeds you) together with Hardcore Metal Band — the constant self-damage keeps your Bulwark stacks maxed out for the entire map, with no timing or trigger management. It's the single most reliable way to sit at 25% DR from Bulwark alone. Add Ring of Omens from the Cathedral of Omens for superheavy-armor dodge builds — see our rings guide.

Is Bulwark Worth Building Around?

Yes, with a caveat about the 80% cap. On an Apocalypse run, a tank that stacks armor DR + Bulwark + Barkskin (the trait's flat 10% DR — see our traits guide) genuinely becomes unkillable against everything but one-shot mechanics. The trap is over-stacking: if your total DR already reads 75%+, extra Bulwark sources do almost nothing because of the cap. The practical recipe is one consistent Bulwark source (Juggernaut or the Atonement Fold combo) plus armor that lands you in the 55-70% range — that combination reaches the cap without wasting slots.

Bulwark also has a 2026 endgame angle: the prism legendary Immovable makes you un-staggerable while Bulwark is active, and Impervious adds a flat 30% damage reduction on top. Both are worth planning your prism fusions around — see our prisms guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Bulwark do in Remnant 2?

It's a stacking buff that grants damage reduction: 7% at 1 stack, up to 25% at 5 stacks (27% at 6 with the Thalos Eyelet ring). A shield icon under your health bar shows your current stack count.

How many Bulwark stacks can you have?

Five normally, six with the Thalos Eyelet ring (The Forgotten Kingdom DLC). Different sources can all contribute at once, and the buff refreshes while sources remain active.

How do I get Bulwark stacks?

From gear (Hardcore Metal Band, Blessed Ring, Guardian's Ring, Fae Bruiser Ring and more), the Challenger's Juggernaut skill and Die Hard/Face of Danger perks, and several rings from the DLCs. The Atonement Fold + Hardcore Metal Band combo keeps it permanently maxed.

Is Bulwark worth building around?

Yes — it's the standard route to the 80% damage-reduction cap, especially with Challenger or the Atonement Fold combo. But total DR is capped at 80%, so don't stack more sources than needed.

What is the damage reduction cap in Remnant 2?

80% total, counting armor DR, Bulwark and all other damage reduction together. Bulwark's 25% and a good armor set alone can get a tank build there.
