Scrap Mechanic Vehicle Building — Cars, Tanks, Trucks, Boats & Trailers
How to build vehicles in Scrap Mechanic: chassis rules, wheels and suspension, engines, steering and tank tracks — plus car, truck, small tank, boat and trailer build recipes.
Scrap Mechanic Vehicle Building — Cars, Tanks, Trucks, Boats & Trailers
Every Scrap Mechanic adventure lives or dies by its vehicles. A good car turns a boring walk into a resource run; a good truck moves whole bases. This guide covers the physics rules every build must respect, then gives you proven layouts for cars, small tanks, trucks, boats and trailers in Scrap Mechanic 1.0.

The Garage lets you build with unlimited parts and no survival risk — prototype every vehicle there, blueprint it, then rebuild in survival. Skills and parts are identical.
The Five Rules of Vehicle Building
- Suspension or nothing — wheels must mount through suspension parts (Sport, Off-Road, Wishbone). Bolted wheels shake apart on terrain. See the suspension guide for the part-by-part breakdown
- Frame first, decorate later — build the chassis as a solid block spine, then attach seats, engines and storage
- Engine placement matters — the engine needs fuel connections and clearance; the petrol engine is the standard, the electric engine (1.0) is quieter but needs charging
- Steering is bearings — a steering bearing on the front axle, or tank steering with two independent sides
- Test in the Garage — build and test without survival pressure (it also unlocks an achievement)
The Beginner Car (Your First Car Quest)
The quest-tested starter layout:
- 4-block chassis (2×2)
- Sport Suspension on all four corners
- 4 wheels, front two on steering bearings
- Seat on top, connected
- Small petrol engine + fuel tank
- Optional: bed on the back
This is the fastest reliable car in the game to build and handles roads and mild off-road fine. Upgrade to Off-Road or Wishbone suspension when you hit rough biomes.
The Small Tank
Tanks trade speed for armor and firepower. The classic small tank:
- Wide metal frame (4×3 or wider) so it doesn't tip
- Tank steering: two independent driven wheel sides (or track blocks) — each side driven separately, no steering bearings needed
- Spud guns or turret on top (see the raid defense guide for turret builds)
- Armor blocks around the engine — engines are the weak point
Tanks shine in raid defense and mining; they're slow for exploration.
The Truck (Cargo Hauler)
Trucks are about carrying capacity:
- Long chassis, two axles (4 or 6 wheels)
- Off-Road Suspension for load stability
- Large storage chests mounted low — top-heavy trucks flip on slopes
- A trailer hitch on the rear lets you tow a trailer (see below)
The classic "semi truck" build adds a powered cab with a bed plus an unpowered trailer with its own wheels — the community standard for long mining hauls.
Boats
Water crossing is early-game pain. The basic boat:
- Flat hull (wider than it is long for stability)
- Sealed block base — no gaps or it floods
- Thrusters pointing backward for propulsion, or a paddle system
- A steering thruster or rudder bearing
Boats matter more after 1.0, since the underground chapters have water sections. See 1.0 & Drilling Thunder.
Trailers & The Trailer Hitch
The trailer hitch connects a trailer to a vehicle — the difference between "a truck" and "a truck with a base on it":
- Build the trailer as a normal frame with wheels + suspension
- Mount the hitch part on the truck's rear
- Keep the trailer's center of gravity low — a top-heavy trailer jackknifes every turn
- Trailer wheels need their own suspension and brake setup
Trailers carry mining rigs, water supplies and harvested crops. A well-towed trailer doubles effective base-building capacity.
Car Design Ideas (Community Favorites)
- The Farm Runner — small car with a watering tank and harvester mounted front (see auto farm)
- The Mining Rig — truck chassis with drill attachments and cable rolls (see 1.0 guide)
- The Mobile Base — a wide truck carrying a bed, chests and a Craftbot — respawn, craft and haul in one vehicle
- The Hovercraft — thrusters only, no wheels; fun, fuel-hungry, and a great way to learn logic gates for control
FAQ
Why does my car shake and spin? Most likely bearing rotation directions — flip one side with the connector tool. Also check suspension stiffness consistency.
What's the best suspension for a car? Sport for roads, Off-Road for terrain, Wishbone/Double Wishbone for stability at speed. Details in the suspension guide.
Can vehicles be saved and reused? Yes — every creation is stored in your Garage list; you can spawn blueprints anytime (creative mode) and rebuild with survival parts.
Do vehicles need fuel? Petrol engines need fuel; electric engines (1.0) run on battery. In creative mode nothing needs fuel.
How many players fit in one vehicle? As many seats as you build — the classic troop carrier holds 4+ with a turret seat.
