Hell Let Loose Vietnam Push to Talk - Channels, Keys & Fixes

Hell Let Loose: Vietnam is a 50v50 game where the radio is more important than the rifle. Every kill-streak hero without a microphone is worth less to the team than a mediocre player calling out enemy positions. The game's voice system is a military-style multi-channel radio — proximity, unit and leadership — and push to talk is enabled by default from your first match. This guide covers the keys, the channels, console controls, and how to fix a mic that won't cooperate.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • The default push to talk keys on PC (and where to rebind them)
  • The three voice channels: what each is for and who can use it
  • How push to talk works on PS5 and Xbox with a controller
  • Toggle vs hold: the "Toggle Radio Channels" setting explained
  • Callout etiquette that makes voice chat actually useful
  • How to fix a mic that isn't transmitting

How to Use Push to Talk in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam

Good news: push to talk is enabled by default — there is no hidden setting to switch on before your first match. Hold the key for the channel you want, speak, release, done. Your microphone is completely muted between presses, which is the point: no keyboard clacking, no breathing, no fan noise bleeding into the team radio.

There is no always-on open-mic mode in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam's voice system — every channel transmits only while you hold its key. If your voice is broadcasting without you pressing anything, that's a bug or a mic-configuration problem (see the fixes section at the bottom).

Test before you deploy

Open the Audio settings before your first match, speak into your mic, and watch for the voice indicator. Five minutes of setup saves you from being the mute who couldn't warn the squad about the T-54 on the ridge.

Voice Channels Explained: Proximity, Unit, Leadership

The game has three radio channels, each with its own key and purpose (colour-coded in the UI):

Channel Default key (PC) Colour Who hears you
Proximity V (hold) Blue Nearby teammates, including players outside your squad
Unit C (hold) Green Your six-player squad, anywhere on the map
Leadership X (hold) Red Command roles only, across the whole map

Proximity chat uses 3D spatial audio: nearby teammates hear your voice coming from your position. It's for on-the-ground coordination — "two coming through the treeline to my left" — and for talking to randoms who aren't in your unit. There is no range limit on the radio channels: Unit chat works whether your squadmate is one metre or one kilometre away.

Leadership radio is restricted to the roles that carry command authority: Commander, Squad Leader, Tank Commander, Spotter, Observer and Logistics Officer (per the playtest-era documentation). This is the channel where the big picture lives — mortar requests, armour sightings, garrison plans. If you're not in a command role, the red channel is locked to you.

There is no enemy chat — you cannot voice chat with the opposing team at all, so there's no risk of leaking intel by holding the wrong key.

Some launch guides list different keys

A couple of launch-window guides list different defaults (for example, L and K for unit/leadership). The V / C / X layout above matches the playtest documentation and the original Hell Let Loose convention. If a key doesn't respond, open Options → Keybindings and check — that page shows your actual binds, and rebinding takes ten seconds.

Push to Talk on Console (PS5 & Xbox)

On a controller, the system works through a channel wheel: hold the left bumper (L1/LB) to open the channel selector, choose Proximity, Unit or Leadership with the stick, and release. Your voice then broadcasts on that channel while you hold... the wheel mechanism means the game stays on your selected channel — the guides covering the launch build note that on console (or PC with a controller) the channel stays on Proximity until you manually switch it.

Practical console tips:

  • Default to Unit chat for squad coordination — it has no range limit and covers your six.
  • Switch to Leadership only when you're in a command role and have something the whole team needs.
  • Use Proximity when working alongside non-squad teammates — river crossings and village fights are where it shines.
  • A headset with a mic is mandatory; the TV speaker and Kinect/PS Camera-style setups are not a practical voice solution in a game this coordinated.

Full controller bindings live in the controller settings guide; PC players who prefer a mouse-and-keyboard layout should check the keyboard and mouse settings guide for the complete bind table.

Toggle vs Hold: The "Toggle Radio Channels" Setting

If you'd rather tap than hold, there's a setting for it. In the Controls page, find "Toggle Radio Channels."

  • Off (default) — push to talk: hold the key, transmit, release.
  • On — toggle: tap the key once to open the channel, tap again to close it.

The developers ship the game in hold-to-talk mode by default. Toggle mode is worth switching on only if you're on a platform where holding a key is awkward — for example, if you're talking on Discord with your squad and only occasionally want to broadcast to the wider team. Otherwise, stay in hold mode: toggling open a channel mid-fight is how you broadcast a panic to 49 teammates.

Voice Etiquette: Callouts That Win Fights

A radio full of noise is worse than no radio. The community standard that works (also the standard in the original Hell Let Loose) is the Who / What / Where format:

  • Who — enemy infantry, tank, machine gunner, squad
  • What — pushing, defending, flanking, retreating
  • Where — direction, landmark or compass bearing

Example: "Enemy squad pushing from the north, 030, toward the village." That's usable in five seconds. "There's dudes over there somewhere behind some trees" is not.

Other etiquette: don't narrate your whole life on Unit chat, keep Leadership chat for things the whole team needs (mortar fire requests, garrison locations, armour sightings), and let the squad leader run the channel — one voice directs, the rest respond.

The commander's radio is a hot mic

Roles like Commander, Squad Leader and Tank Commander should treat the Leadership channel like a live broadcast. Check your binds before the match — accidentally transmitting "I have no idea what I'm doing" to the whole leadership team is a classic first-game moment. The squad leader guide covers the command routine properly.

Fixing Voice Chat in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam

Voice problems at launch were common enough that the developers confirmed audio fixes in the first hotfix (including audio cut-outs on PS5 and distorted voice caused by EOS, the voice backend). Until patches land, work through these:

  • PC — Windows mic privacy: Settings → Privacy → Microphone → allow apps to access the microphone and confirm Hell Let Loose: Vietnam is listed.
  • PC — another app owns the mic: Discord, Steam voice or a headset app can grab exclusive control. In Windows Sound Settings → Microphone → Properties → Advanced, untick "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device."
  • In-game VOIP reset: if chat cuts out mid-match, open Audio Options and use VOIP Status → Disconnect to reset the voice connection without leaving the match.
  • PS5 — audio cut-outs: a developer-confirmed launch bug addressed in the first hotfix; update the game and check your headset's system settings in the meantime.
  • Still broken: the full troubleshooting guide has the complete launch-fix list, and the best audio settings guide covers volume balance, voice volume and headphone setup so you can actually hear the callouts.
