Hell Let Loose Vietnam Keybindings — Complete Key List & Recommended Rebinds

Hell Let Loose: Vietnam inherits the franchise's dense control scheme — three voice channels, a tactical map, marking, leaning, freelook, and an entire pilot binding set for the new Huey helicopters — and adds a few Vietnam-specific twists like the NVA tunnel interaction and patrol boat driver controls. The defaults are mostly well-chosen; this guide lists every binding, flags the ones worth rebinding, and shows the mouse settings that make jungle rifle fights manageable.

Voice Chat and Push to Talk: The Three Radios

Vietnam has three voice channels, and getting them onto thumb buttons transforms how you play:

  • V — Proximity Talk: everyone nearby hears you.
  • C — Unit Radio: your squad (officer + members).
  • X — Leadership Radio: commanders, squad leaders, tank and helicopter leads.

Push to talk is the default behavior, but there's a catch worth knowing: the game has a "Toggle Radio Channels" option under Keyboard & Mouse. With it On (which the developers set as the default for the playtest builds), pressing the key toggles the channel open until you press it again — safer against voice distortion, but it leaves your mic hot. Set it Off for classic hold-to-talk where the mic transmits only while you hold the key.

Per the official Crossplay Playtest announcement: "Keyboard & Mouse -> Toggle Radio Channels: Default has been changed from Off to On" during the playtest to minimize voice distortion — and the launch update confirmed the robotic-voice issue was largely resolved for Command and Squad chat. You can flip the toggle either way in the launch build.

Thumb-button radio setup

Bind Unit Radio to Mouse Button 4 and Proximity Talk to Mouse Button 5. You keep moving and aiming while talking, which matters constantly in Vietnam — the game's movement system is already demanding, and a radio on the keyboard takes a finger off a movement key.

The Five Rebinds Worth Making Immediately

  1. Crouch Ctrl → C, Prone Z → X. Ctrl sits below the palm and slows your strafing; C/X put crouch and prone on easy reach so you drop into foliage instantly when shots crack past.
  2. Steady Aim Shift → Caps Lock or MB4. Vietnam adds heavy weapon sway when aiming down sights for long periods (see the vs guide for how it differs from WWII HLL). Steady aim on a thumb button lets you hold breath while keeping Shift free for sprint.
  3. Radios onto mouse buttons (above) — V/C on MB4/MB5.
  4. Equipment Wheel → Mouse Button 5 if your mouse has the buttons to spare; the wheel is a quick swap between grenades, smoke and tools.
  5. Tank Smoke Screen Space → F — prevents accidentally deploying smoke when you meant handbrake.

Pilot Keybindings (Helicopter)

The Huey has its own binding set, and it's the most important new control scheme in the game:

Action Default Recommendation
Pitch Forwards / Backwards W / S Keep
Yaw Left / Right Left / Right Mouse Button Keep
Roll Left / Right A / D Keep
Increase Collective Space Keep
Reduce Collective Left Ctrl Keep
Helicopter Supply Drop E Keep
Fire Recon Flare Space F
Auto-Level Left Shift Keep
Mouse buttons = yaw on the Huey

The default binds yaw to the mouse buttons (LMB/RMB) and roll to A/D — unusual for flight games, but deliberate: it keeps your mouse hand on throttle-independent controls. Don't rebind it to standard pitch-on-mouse until you've flown a few minutes; the Vietnam scheme is tuned for its flight model. Full flight technique is in the helicopter pilot guide.

Low sensitivity wins in Vietnam — engagements happen at range through foliage, and "every unnecessary mouse movement costs you":

Setting Best Value
Look Sensitivity 15
Free Look Sensitivity 20
ADS Sensitivity 10
Scoped Sensitivity 7
Smooth Mouse Off
Crouch Toggle On

Pair these with a 400–800 DPI mouse and a comfortable in-game sens rather than high DPI + high sens. The scoped value at 7 keeps a 200-meter rifle target steady; ADS at 10 handles the 50–150m jungle band. Many competitive players also run a FOV between 90 and 100 for situational awareness — see the best settings guide for the full graphics side.

Steam Deck and Linux

Hell Let Loose: Vietnam runs on SteamOS/Linux (GamingOnLinux confirmed it works on the Steam Deck at launch). On Deck, the trackpads map to mouse look, and the back buttons make excellent Unit Radio / Steady Aim bindings — the full keybinding screen works from the Deck's virtual keyboard.
