Escape From Tarkov Customs Map: Extracts, Reshala, Keys and the Quests That Keep You Here

Customs is the map everyone learns first and never really leaves: an industrial park that grew to nearly double its original size with the 2022 expansion, and the engine room for the game's early quest lines. Raids run 35 minutes with roughly 10–13 PMC players depending on the patch (community trackers like tarkov.dev list 10–12; map guides report up to 13), and the map boss Reshala roams between Dorms, New Gas Station and the Stronghold at a high spawn rate. It is also the most quest-dense map in the game — half of Prapor, Therapist and Skier's early tasks live here, along with the unknown key (Extortionist) and multiple MS2000 marker objectives. This guide covers the full map: extracts with requirements, the keys worth carrying, Reshala and the night cultists, the quest walkthroughs players search for, loot routes and the overlay tools that make it all navigable.

Customs at a Glance

Customs is the second map added to Tarkov (2017), a strip of industrial land between the factory zone and the river. Its layout is a rough west–east spine: the train yard and warehouses in the west, the factory/construction zone in the middle, the two Dorms buildings and the bridge in the east, with the river splitting the south. After the 0.12.12-era expansion it roughly doubled, adding the Stronghold, new gas station and the Fortress area (official wiki — Customs).

Stat Value
Raid duration 35 minutes
PMC players 10–13 (patch-dependent)
Main boss Reshala (Dorms / New Gas Station / Stronghold)
Other threats Cultists at night (Scav base near ZB-013), Partisan, the Goons
Signature loot Dorms marked room (3-story, Room 314 key), Stronghold weapon crates
Map hazards Sniper scavs, open crossing points, one bridge choke

The map is a corridor, which is both its strength and its trap: everyone funnels through the same landmarks, so firefights are predictable, and the early quests are all within walking distance of each other. The flip side is that extract camping (especially around the west-side exits) is a constant, so route planning matters more here than on any map this size.

You unlock Customs early, but watch the map gate

Like Woods and Factory, Customs is initially reachable only by transit, and direct access unlocks as you progress the story chapter "Tour". If the map tab is greyed out in the location screen, finish the current story step first — it is not a bug.

Every PMC Extract on Customs

Extracts depend on your spawn side (east or west), and Customs has one of the largest extract pools in the game (timesaver's 2026 Customs guide, official wiki extract table):

Extract Side Requirement Notes
Crossroads East None Always-open road exit; quiet, low traffic
Old Gas Station East/south Green flare (RSP-30 or signal pistol) Flare extract by the old station
Trailer Park East None Exit through the trailer park corner; also a quest cabin nearby
Dorms V-Ex East ~7,000₽ car fee Single-use car; the classic "loot Dorms and leave" exit
ZB-1011 West None Underground bunker exit, mid-west
ZB-013 West Factory Emergency Exit key Bunker exit that needs the key
RUAF Roadblock West None The west-side workhorse exit; near the Extortionist key body
Sniper Roadblock West None Walk-in exit past the train yard
Railway Bridge to Tarkov West None Transit extract onward to other maps
Smugglers' Boat / Co-op South PMC + player Scav together Co-op extract on the river side
Outskirts-class camping happens at RUAF and Trailer Park

The open-field extracts on Customs are the classic ambush spots — players hide in the bushes around RUAF Roadblock and wait for quest runners. Approach the extract line from cover, and if a quest item is on you, consider the bunker exits instead.

The spawn-side rule is the same as every map: double-tap O at raid start and plan around the two or three extracts you actually have, never a single one.

Keys Worth Carrying on Customs

Customs has more relevant keys than any early map. The ones that pay for themselves:

  1. 3-story Dorms marked room key (Room 314) — the single most lucrative locked room on the map: marked-room loot spawns (weapon cases, valuables, occasionally keycards). Expect fighting — everyone rushes it (timesaver Customs guide).
  2. Factory Emergency Exit key — unlocks ZB-013 extract and the Factory exit room key sources; found in the factory zone.
  3. Dorm room keys (204, 206, 214, 303, 306...) — room 303 is required for the Golden Swag quest (Golden Zibbo lighter), and Therapist barters the 303 key (7 T-Plugs + 3 Tape). A stack of dorm keys turns one Dorms run into a full loot loop.
  4. Unknown key — a quest key with a 100% spawn rate on a dead Scav near RUAF Roadblock; used in The Extortionist (below). Not for loot, but essential.
Keys live in your secure container

Dorm keys and the marked-room key survive death only if they're in your secure container. Insurance is a 24-hour delay; the container is instant. Every Customs veteran keeps a keytool loaded before loading in.

Reshala, the Customs Boss

Reshala is the map boss and the community's favorite warm-up boss — genuinely dangerous with his guards, but far easier than the Streets or Reserve bosses. Current spawn data from live trackers puts him at roughly 75% on Customs in the 1.0.6/seasonal patch (historically 30–40% across older patches; timesaver boss data, goon-tracker live spawn rates). He rotates between three zones with 2–3 heavily armed guards:

  • Dorms — the classic spot; guards hold the buildings and the yard between them
  • New Gas Station — the mid-map gas station
  • Stronghold — the Fortress/stronghold building complex

Reshala's guard squad uses mid-tier armor and aggressive AI; the community consensus is to engage at range, use grenades to split the guards, and always assume a guard is flanking. He drops his Golden TT pistol (a quest/collector item) plus his weapon and armor — the Golden TT is one of the reasons farming Reshala early in a cycle is a staple routine (GGRecon Customs guide).

Customs also hosts the roaming threats: Cultists (night raids, at the Scav base near ZB-013 — they can replace Reshala's spawn between 22:00 and 06:00), Partisan (hunts campers) and occasionally the Goons (Knight, Big Pipe, Birdeye) (GGRecon, Slyther Games map guide). Night raids on Customs are quieter, but the cultists make them a different game — the bosses guide covers them in depth.

Per the official Escape from Tarkov Wiki — Customs, Customs is "the second map that was added to the game," an industrial park housing a customs terminal, fuel storage, offices and dorms.

The Unknown Key and The Extortionist Quest

The unknown key is the quest key players search for constantly. It spawns every raid, 100% of the time, on a dead Scav hidden in the bushes near the RUAF Roadblock extract (by the fence hole next to Crackhouse). Take it, put it in your secure container, and it's yours until you use it (official wiki — Unknown key, Tarkov Market item page).

It's used for The Extortionist (Skier's second task, unlocks at level 7 after Supplier): take the key to the crane yard / trainyard area near New Gas Station and unlock the portable cabin; inside is the Secure Folder 0048. Grab it and extract — the folder must reach Skier alive. The key has a single use, so if you die after opening the cabin you have to go collect it again (HackerNoon walkthrough, Pro Game Guides walkthrough).

Grab the key at night or late-raid

The Extortionist body is a known camp spot — players watch the RUAF bushes for quest runners. Hit it at night or 10+ minutes into the raid, loot the body prone, and get the key into your container before anyone reacts.

MS2000 Marker Quests on Customs

The MS2000 Marker is the strobe-light item you plant on objectives; it persists in a special slot and is bought cheap from Prapor or Ragman. Multiple quests send you to Customs with one:

  • Out of Curiosity (Therapist) — unlock by finishing Skier's Chemical Part 3; find the chemical transport van in the warehouse by the big crane and mark it with an MS2000. After planting, survive 30 seconds. Rewards: +7,700 EXP, Therapist rep, 170,000₽ and an injector case. This is the quest that taught most players the "hold F to plant" mechanic.
  • Abandoned Cargo (Therapist) — plant multiple MS2000 markers on cargo points across Customs; best done in two night raids.
  • Big Customer (Prapor) — the Chemical-chain alternative on Customs with its own objectives.

The MS2000 is also used on Woods (Steady Signal, Weapons Circulation) and Streets (Route Deviation — 6 BTR stops), but Customs is where most players learn the mechanic. Keep markers in your secure container; a backpack death means a wasted raid (official wiki — MS2000 Marker).

The Rest of the Early Quest Stack

Beyond the two above, Customs carries the bulk of the first-50-levels quest load: Debut and Checking (Prapor), Shortage and Operation Aquarius (Therapist — find water in Dorms), Delivery from the Past (Prapor — the bronze pocket watch in Dorms), Golden Swag (Skier — Zibbo lighter from Dorms 303 to the Trailer Park cabin), Chemical Parts 1–4, Bad Rep Evidence, Shaking Up the Teller, and Provide Viewership (Ref — install 4 Wi-Fi cameras in the industrial plant, then kill 15 targets inside; +32,000 EXP and GP coins). Batch them: one Dorms raid can clear three objectives at once, which is exactly how the early-season playbook in the wipe guide recommends playing the first 72 hours.

Loot Routes and Map Overlays

Customs loot is concentrated in a handful of zones: Dorms (safes, jackets, keys, marked room), Stronghold (weapon crates, tech), New Gas Station (fuel, tools), the warehouses/train yard (technical loot, intel folders) and hidden stashes along the roads. Early wipe, prioritize quest items over roubles — flash drives (two potential spawns behind 2-story Dorms), gas analyzers and Salewas are worth more as quest progress than as vendor trash (eft-ammo Customs guide).

For navigation, the community standard is an interactive map overlay — a second monitor (or a phone) showing live extracts, key spawns and quest markers. The best maintained options: tarkov.dev interactive Customs map (open-source, quest and loot layers), MapGenie (detailed paid layers) and the in-game maps sold by traders for flavor. Overlay apps that read your game memory are cheat-adjacent and bannable — stick to browser-based maps, which is what the cheater-safe practices in our cheat guide actually mean by a clean setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many players are on the Customs map?

Community trackers (tarkov.dev) list 10–12 PMCs with some guides reporting up to 13 on the expanded layout. Raids run 35 minutes. Expect PvP concentration around Dorms, New Gas Station and the Stronghold.

Where does Reshala spawn on Customs?

He rotates between three zones: Dorms, New Gas Station and the Stronghold, with 2–3 guards. Current tracked spawn rate is roughly 75% in the 1.0.6/seasonal patch (historically 30–40%). At night, cultists can replace his Scav-base spawn between 22:00 and 06:00.

What is the unknown key used for in Escape from Tarkov?

It's the quest key for The Extortionist (Skier): it spawns 100% of raids on a dead Scav near RUAF Roadblock and opens the portable cabin in the crane yard holding Secure Folder 0048. It has one use.

What quests use the MS2000 marker on Customs?

Out of Curiosity (mark the chemical van by the big crane, survive 30 seconds), Abandoned Cargo (multiple cargo points) and Big Customer are the Customs ones. Markers cost little from Prapor and sit in a special slot that survives death.

What is the best map overlay for Customs?

tarkov.dev's interactive Customs map is the community favorite (free, open-source, quest/loot layers); MapGenie is the feature-rich alternative. Use browser-based overlays — memory-reading overlay apps are bannable.
