Big Walk Multiplayer & Crossplay Guide — How to Play With Friends

Big Walk is a multiplayer-only co-op adventure — every puzzle, every moment, is built around a group working and talking together. Understanding how its multiplayer works (player counts, join codes, crossplay, and its limitations) matters before you even start. This guide covers everything you need to get your group playing.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • The player count and how puzzles scale (2/3/4 players)
  • How Join Codes work and how to start a session
  • Crossplay between PS5, PC, Switch 2 and macOS
  • Why there's no local co-op and no solo mode
  • How the host/save system works

Player Count: 2 to 12

Big Walk supports 2 to 12 players in a single session. The official press kit describes it as "as few as 2 players (a focused co-op experience) or as many as 12 (an absolute mess)" — both are valid ways to play.

Puzzles scale for 2/3/4-player groups: bigger groups get more buttons to press, more pieces to collect, and higher point targets — but the core logic stays the same. The game officially balances for 2, 3 and 4 players; sessions above 4 still work but are more chaotic by design.

Start with 2-3 players

The best first experience is a focused 2-3 player group. Bigger groups are fun but the puzzle rooms get crowded, and communication gets harder — especially in the puzzles that mute you.

How to Start a Session & Join Codes

Big Walk has no automatic matchmaking — you connect with friends through direct invites or Join Codes:

  1. The host starts a session and generates a Join Code
  2. Share the code with anyone you want to play with
  3. Friends enter the code to join seamlessly — crossplay included (see below)

The host's save file is the world state — friends join and leave the host's world, and their progress ties back to it.

Crossplay: PS5, PC, Switch 2 & macOS

Yes, Big Walk is crossplay. Because there's no platform lock on lobbies, players on PS5, Windows PC, Nintendo Switch 2 and macOS can all play together using Join Codes — no platform-specific friends lists required.

What about Xbox? Big Walk is not available on Xbox at launch, and House House hasn't announced a port. Xbox players can't play it at all.

No cross-progression between platforms

Crossplay lets different platforms play together, but your save and progress live in the host's session. Don't expect your unlocks to carry across to another platform or another host.

Voice Chat & Communication

Big Walk leans hard on talking, then takes it away. In-game, you get:

  • Proximity voice/text chat while you're close to each other
  • The game's signature twist: many puzzles remove your voice, forcing you to use gestures, mimes, walkie-talkies, laser pointers, and flares to communicate

The best setups keep an external voice channel open (Discord, etc.) for the parts where the game mutes you — some puzzles are dramatically easier when you can still coordinate outside the game's restrictions.

Why There's No Local Co-op or Solo Mode

Two of the most-asked questions have definitive answers:

  • No local co-op / splitscreen. Big Walk is online co-op only — there's no couch co-op, no splitscreen, one player per device.
  • No solo mode. You can load into a world alone, but you cannot solve puzzles or progress on your own — every puzzle requires cooperation. There is no single-player path.

If you only have one device, you need to play online with friends on their own devices.
