What Is Servant of the Lake?
Servant of the Lake is a single-player point-and-click adventure puzzle game developed and published by Rusty Lake (founded by Robin Ras and Maarten Looise). It's the studio's nineteenth game and eighth premium title, following The Past Within (2022) and Underground Blossom (2024) — and it's the first full Rusty Lake adventure to be set in the Vanderboom house during the era of Aldous and William Vanderboom, the generation that Rusty Lake: Roots only references in its backstory.
Official source: the Steam store listing describes it as "the new premium point-and-click adventure in the Rusty Lake series from the creators of the Cube Escape series, The Past Within and Underground Blossom."
The pitch is deceptively simple: you are hired as the new servant of the Vanderboom estate. Guests are arriving for the family's yearly reunion, and you must look after the household — straightening portraits, doing laundry, preparing breakfast, serving tea, welcoming the guests — while the family quietly pursues their alchemical ambitions. What starts as a housekeeping sim slowly becomes one of the most story-dense Rusty Lake games ever shipped.
The game was announced May 1, 2025 during Rusty Lake's 10-year anniversary event (as a secret reward in The Mr. Rabbit Magic Show), revealed with a trailer on August 21, 2025, and got a Steam demo on October 13, 2025. After a short delay from the originally planned spring window, it launched August 13, 2026. Music is by series composer Victor Butzelaar (with a special harp collaboration by Lavinia Meijer), and the game's oil-painted backdrops are by artist Johan Scherft.
If you've never played a Rusty Lake game, or you're not sure the "servant sim" framing is for you, the free demo is the right first step — roughly 15–30 minutes covering the first third of Day 1, and saves are not carried over to the full game.
Servant of the Lake Gameplay — How the Weekend Works
Servant of the Lake isn't an escape-the-room game like most Cube Escape entries. It's a job. Each in-game day is a chain of named tasks — The Arrival, Preparing Breakfast, Waking Up Aldous, Preparing the Reception, Welcoming the Guests, Serving Tea, Opening the Reunion, The Night Watch — and each task is really a puzzle chain dressed up as housework.
The core loop:
- Take your task from the maid. She issues the next chore and nudges the story forward.
- Scavenge. Almost every puzzle is gated behind an object one room back — a cloth, a set of matches, a key. Check tables, drawers and cabinets.
- Solve. The puzzles run the full Rusty Lake spectrum: portrait dusting that unlocks a code, a cockroach board, a flower combination, porridge with a bug inside, a baby-shaking suitcase lock, an Exit 8-style night patrol, and a constellation box in the attic.
- Progress. Finishing a task unlocks the next chapter, and every chapter name doubles as a Steam achievement.
Two systems make the game friendlier than past Rusty Lake entries. The Servant's Notebook, given to you after signing the employment contract, tracks your current task, records every note and document you find, and shows which hidden achievements you're missing. And chapter replay is built in — once you finish a day you can replay it from the notebook, so nothing is permanently missable. Our full walkthrough covers all three days task-by-task, and the puzzles guide has every solution (portrait code, flowers, cockroach board, alchemy symbols) in one place.
Servant of the Lake has no equipment database or loot system — it's pure narrative puzzling, so our guides use standard callouts and screenshots rather than data cards or badges.
The Vanderboom Estate in 1839 — Setting & Story
The year is 1839. The Vanderboom house stands near the shores of Rusty Lake, and three siblings gather for their annual reunion: Aldous, the quiet eldest who owns the house; William, the younger brother who climbs in through windows with a drink in hand; and Alexandra, who arrives with her three-month-old son James — the same James who inherits the estate in Rusty Lake: Roots.
You play the new servant, guided by Kate, the live-in maid, who is visibly terrified of the family and warns you not to pry. William, convinced Aldous is hiding something, pushes you to investigate the attic and basement for evidence of "the Elixir" — an alchemical mixture rumoured to grant immortality. Between breakfasts and tea services you uncover the family's darker secrets, including the "Riddle of Vanderboom" scene in the attic that tells the founding story of the family line.
The game reveals who the siblings' parents were (a father who died at war, a mother who saw a giant cube in her final vision), and it ends with a twist that recontextualizes everything — full plot coverage runs through the walkthrough, and the characters guide profiles every person in the house.
Where Servant of the Lake Fits in the Rusty Lake Timeline
Chronologically, Servant of the Lake is the earliest mainline premium game in the series. The commonly accepted canonical order runs:
| Period | Game |
|---|---|
| 1796 | Rusty Lake Paradise |
| 1839 | Servant of the Lake |
| 1859–1860 | The Elixir event (William dies, Aldous becomes Mr. Crow), James inherits |
| 1860–1935 | Rusty Lake: Roots |
| 1935– | Samsara Room, Cube Escape: Birthday, and onward into the modern-era games |
Because the game sets up the Elixir of Life storyline that Roots pays off — the brothers' 1859 experiment where William drinks first and dies, and Aldous drinks second and transforms into Mr. Crow — it's best played before Roots if you're going chronological. See our Rusty Lake timeline guide for the full series breakdown.
Servant of the Lake was designed as the backstory Roots always implied. If you've only played Roots, this fills in who Aldous and William were before the Elixir — and baby James in the reunion dinner becomes a completely different scene once you know where he ends up.
