Servant of the Lake puzzles solved: flower combination, cockroach, portrait code 2-4-3, porridge/insect berries, wine bottles and the secret box 6294.
Servant of the Lake Puzzles — Every Puzzle Solved & Explained
Servant of the Lake hides a full Rusty Lake file of puzzles inside a housekeeping routine. Every chore — breakfast, portraits, tea, the reunion dinner — is a puzzle chain dressed as work, and the game's alchemical ambitions push several of them well past "serve the porridge." This is the complete puzzle file, grouped by where you'll hit them, with step-by-step solutions for the ones that actually trap people: the flower combination, the cockroach board, the portrait code, the porridge/insect berry trick, and the dangerous alchemy symbol locks.
Here's what you'll learn:
- The flower combination puzzle, solve order and the nesting logic
- The cockroach board, including how to avoid a forced restart
- Every numeric code: the portrait box (2-4-3), the coffee box (315), the suitcase (374), the champagne box (1753)
- The porridge / insect-berry sequence in Waking Up Aldous
- The fly-and-buds steering sequence for the reunion
- Wine-bottle alchemy locks and the final box 6294

The Flower Combination Puzzle
You meet the flower puzzle in Welcoming the Guests (Day 1, the garden). The planter gives a clue, but it's cryptic shorthand — here's what it actually means. You're filling a small pyramid where:
- The bottom row is the four individual elements: the leaves, the base, the pink middle, and the white petals.
- Each row above combines the two elements below it into the next state.
- The top cell is the fully combined flower.
Read it like a craft of combining pixels/elements: base + leaves, then fold in the pink middle, then the white petals. Copy the reference in the garden and build bottom-up. When the top flower is complete you take the stone tablet reward.
If you're stuck, stop trying to force the flower and instead combine the two cells beneath each slot. It's the same "parent = merge of children" logic used by the later nesting-doll box — once you see the pattern, the whole garden unlocks.
For the Ruining the bouquet hidden achievement, solve this puzzle and feed the resulting flowers to the goat before you milk it — covered in the achievements guide.
The Cockroach Puzzle (Garden Board)
Roaches, a board, and a stone with arrows — you're clearing every roach into its hole. Move the arrowed stone next to a roach to push it one space toward the hole. The catch: a roach pushed into a corner it can't escape from forces a full restart of the board.
Strategy that avoids restarts:
- Plan the move order before touching a roach — never push one toward a wall or a dead-end of the board.
- Work roaches that sit near the edge of their holes first.
- If a roach would end its push diagonally-boxed, push another roach first to open the path, then come back.
Take the stone tablet when clear. This is the garden's most restart-prone puzzle, so go slow.
The Portrait Code (2-4-3)
In Preparing the Reception, dust the three living Vanderboom portraits. Each reveals a number:
- William blinks 3 times.
- Alexandra holds up 2 fingers.
- Aldous shakes his pocket watch 4 times.
Upstairs, the locked cabinet shows the three portraits of Alexandra, Aldous and William (in that picture order). Match each slot to the number from the same sibling — so the code is Alexandra(2), Aldous(4), William(3) = 2 4 3. Inside is the third candle.
It's easy to assume "2 fingers, 3 blinks, 4 shakes" in portrait order William-Alexandra-Aldous — but the box's slots are ordered Alexandra, Aldous, William. Enter 243, not 342.
The Coffee Box Code (315) — Day 2
Day 2's Preparing Coffee reuses the same code-under-dusting trick with a direction twist:
- Upstairs near William's room, open all the windows — each shows a Vanderboom with a number.
- Back at the three portraits, read which direction each points: Alexandra points up, Aldous points right, William points left.
- Match each pointing direction to the numbered window above/beside each sibling: number above Alexandra = 3, to the right of Aldous = 1, to the left of William = 5.
- Enter 315 in the servant's room lock for the coffee beans.
Official source: Per the Rusty Lake developer blogs, the coffee-bean roasting hint — "serve Mr. Aldous his favorite coffee: roast the beans before grinding" — is the key to the day-two hidden achievement.
The Suitcase Code (374) — Welcoming the Guests
Alexandra's suitcase and the baby basket are linked. Open the basket (the crying baby may startle) and rotate/interact until you make out three numbers: 374. Enter 374 on the locked suitcase (open both sides) and pack the clothing neatly; the coin and bill inside pay the coachman and feed the horse.
The Champagne Box (1753) — the Reunion
In Opening the Reunion, inside the bottom cabinet the note reads 1753. Rotate the box's pieces so they form 1753 and take the bottle of champagne. The second box in that cabinet isn't a code box — it's the broken-glass arrow pattern box that gives William's cigar (copy the arrow you assemble from the shattered glass on the floor).
The Porridge / Insect-Berry Puzzle (Waking Up Aldous)
The most complained-about early puzzle. Aldous's porridge needs something sweet, and the berries hide a bug:
- Feed the crow the earlobe in the window → it drops a key.
- Unlock the top drawer → berries.
- Add berries to the porridge; a bug crawls out.
- Move the berries around until the bug can no longer reach any of the holes — you're boxing it in by repositioning the berries so every escape route is blocked.
- Squash the bug, then spoon-feed Aldous until he says he's full.
Don't chase the bug with taps — you can't catch it directly. The puzzle is about geometry: rearrange the berries to cover the holes. Seal each hole one at a time from the edges inward, then squash what's cornered in the middle.
Fly-and-Buds Steering (Reunion Cabinet)
In the top cabinet, steer a fly through the big buds only using four left/right toggles. Working sequence:
L L L R — L L R L — L R R L — R L L L — R R L L — R R R R
That clears the path and yields the fly eggs (also your hidden-achievement ingredient for seasoning the soup on Day 3).
The Alchemy Symbol Locks (Day 3 Cellar)
Day 3 leans fully into alchemy, and the wine-bottle cellar lock is the big one. A dream-note describes: "Bronze stairs spiral down… a silver snake… a future son draped in gold, a mark upon his brow." Translated to the lock:
- Bronze bottle → the spiral (the stairs).
- Silver bottle → the snake (S).
- Gold bottle → the triangle with a horizontal line (the brow-mark drawn on baby James/William).
Set all three and crawl through the opened barrel into the strange underground room — the gateway to the final secret. The room itself holds the red-fabric note, a mask, and the locked box 6294.
The Final Box (6294)
The endgame box in the underground room strings together clues from across the whole weekend:
- First digit: cross off numbers on the note using the letter's X-bars → 6.
- Second digit: the window drawn on the note matches the house painting's top window, which carries a 2.
- Third digit: the eyeball corresponds to the hunting eyeball on Day 2's table = 9.
- Fourth digit: the alchemy symbol for 4 from Assisting in Alchemy (Day 3) → 4.
Enter 6294, take the telescope, aim it from the window at the building — You've found him! Full context of what this reveals is in the story explained.
Which Puzzles Are the Easiest to Get Stuck On?
Community reports (across the AppUnwrapper and fandom walkthroughs) consistently flag four as the stickiest:
- The cockroach board — restart-happy if you push a roach into a corner.
- The flower pyramid — only hard until you realize it's a combine-two-below mechanic.
- The portrait code — people enter the numbers in the wrong sibling order (243 vs 342).
- The insect-berry porridge — easy to interpret as a chase instead of a puzzle about sealing holes.
The rest — the clock 7:00, the slipper/razor routine, the fly-buds sequence, the nesting-doll tablets, the attic riddle — unspool naturally once you're used to Rusty Lake's "read the note, use the object" loop. For the full order of when each appears, see the walkthrough.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I solve the flower puzzle in Servant of the Lake?
Build the pyramid bottom-up: bottom row has the leaves, base, pink middle and white petals; each higher slot merges the two beneath it; the top cell is the complete flower. Feed it to the goat before milking for the hidden achievement.
What is the portrait code in Servant of the Lake?
2-4-3 in picture order — Alexandra(2 fingers), Aldous(4 watch-shakes), William(3 blinks). The Day 2 coffee box is instead 315 by pointing-direction.
How do I solve the cockroach puzzle in Servant of the Lake?
Move the arrowed stone next to each roach to push it one space toward its hole. Don't corner any roach or the board restarts; plan moves in advance.
How do I do the porridge / insect berry puzzle in Servant of the Lake?
Add the berries, reposition them to seal every hole so the bug can't escape, squash it, then feed Aldous.
What are the alchemy symbols in Servant of the Lake?
The Day 3 cellar wine-bottle lock: bronze-bottle→spiral, silver-bottle→snake, gold-bottle→brow-mark triangle. The underground box then uses a 6 / window-2 / eyeball-9 / alchemy-4 code = 6294.
