All Servant of the Lake characters explained: Aldous, William and Alexandra Vanderboom, baby James, maid Kate, Rustie the cat and Harvey the parrot.
Servant of the Lake Characters — Every Vanderboom & Staff Profile
Servant of the Lake is a character piece wearing a housekeeping game's clothes. The whole three-day weekend revolves around the three Vanderboom siblings — Aldous, William and Alexandra — and the people who serve them: the player's servant, the maid Kate, the estate cat Rustie, and a parrot with a very long series history. Because this is a Rusty Lake prequel, every face here connects forward to Rusty Lake: Roots and beyond — baby James in the cradle is the James who inherits the estate twenty years later. This guide profiles everyone in the house, what they do in the game, and where they end up in the series timeline.

Here's what you'll learn:
- Aldous, William and Alexandra — who each sibling is, and their roles in the weekend
- Baby James, the cradle-bound future protagonist of Rusty Lake: Roots
- Kate the maid and the servant you play — the house staff's side of the story
- Rustie the cat and Harvey the parrot, the estate's two animal residents
- The masked figure of the Night Watch, and what's (and isn't) confirmed about them
- How every character connects to the wider Rusty Lake timeline

The Vanderboom Siblings — Aldous, William and Alexandra
The game's official release trailer introduces the trio with pointed descriptions:
Official source: the launch trailer narration introduces "Aldous, the trustworthy. He seeks wisdom while upholding family tradition. Alexandra, the bright, full of a ruthless ambition, the holder of the family lineage. And William, the powerful, gentle to the staff when he's not in a blind drunken rage. Once a year, they gather to feast and reminisce. While beneath the surface, tensions take a root."
Each sibling gets a full arc over the weekend, and each one's arc matters for the rest of the series.
Aldous Vanderboom — the Eldest Brother (Mr. Crow)
Aldous is the eldest sibling and the one who owns the Vanderboom house — he's the one who hires you. Reviews describe him as "quiet and reserved," the polar opposite of his brother: he follows a strict morning routine (wake at 7:00, shave, breakfast, exercise, dress), and his favourite breakfast is porridge, served a very specific way. He keeps to his bedroom, his study and his alchemy.
In-game, Aldous is the one who needs the most care: you wake him, shave him, dress him, feed him and make him exercise — and the walkthrough chapter "Waking Up Aldous" is where most players meet the game's trickiest personal-care puzzles.
Where he ends up: Aldous is the alchemist of the pair, and around 1859 he and William complete the Elixir of Life. William dies drinking it; Aldous drinks it himself and transforms into Mr. Crow — the crow-headed figure who recurs through Cube Escape, Rusty Lake Hotel and Roots. He sends the family seed to his nephew James, setting the entire Roots family tree in motion. His morning-routine note ("He doesn't like cold feet!") is a running gag that turns grim once you know his future.
William Vanderboom — the Younger Brother (the Corrupted Soul)
William is Aldous's younger brother and the engine of the weekend's paranoia. He climbs in through windows, always has a drink nearby, and is "gentle to the staff" until the alcohol turns him hostile. William is convinced Aldous is hiding something, and early in the game he directs you to investigate the attic and the basement for evidence of the Elixir — an alchemical mixture rumoured to grant immortality. His suspicion drives the game's central mystery and its best hidden content; the attic's "Riddle of Vanderboom" sequence is effectively his request.
If you only follow the maid's task list, you'll finish the weekend without touching the game's deepest content. William's investigation push is what opens the attic riddle, the constellation box and the post-game "you've found him" chain — full routes in the puzzles guide and the walkthrough.
Where he ends up: Around 1859, William drinks the finished Elixir first and dies on the spot, becoming a Corrupted Soul — one of the shadowy, scratchy-eyed entities that stalk the series. A seed is found in his corpse, and Aldous (now Mr. Crow) passes it to James. William's ghost then manipulates the family for decades, collecting ten sacrifices, and is finally resurrected in 1935 as a baby: Laura Vanderboom, the protagonist of the Cube Escape series. Servant of the Lake shows the charismatic, destructive human being behind that long ghost story.
Alexandra Vanderboom — the Sister (and James's Mother)
Alexandra is the siblings' sister and "the holder of the family lineage" — she arrives at the estate with her three-month-old son James, travelling to show off the family's next generation. She is the least present of the three during chores, but the game makes her presence felt: the maid speaks of her only in a hushed whisper, and reviews note that Kate is "horrified" of her and doesn't trust her as a mother. In-game you serve her tea (a surprisingly fiddly chain — the cup breaks and must be glued back with cat residue), hand her flowers, and help quiet baby James during the reunion dinner.
Where she ends up: Alexandra is the mother of James Vanderboom and therefore the ancestor of every Vanderboom after him — Emma, Samuel and Albert (the triplets), Frank, Leonard, Rose, and eventually Laura herself. In 1860, after William's death, she sends James the letter that tells him of his inheritance and the code to the briefcase holding the seed — the opening scene of Rusty Lake: Roots. One day-two scene in Servant of the Lake, under a bloody moon, hints at just how far her ambitions ran. She's profiled in more detail in the timeline guide.
James Vanderboom — the Cradle Protagonist
James is Alexandra's three-month-old son, present at the reunion mostly as a crying baby who needs soothing mid-dinner (the instructions — touch his eyes, the moon, his body, her ring, her gem, her lips, the cloud — make that one of the game's most memorable "puzzles"). The achievements guide flags the scene because of its hidden-achievement interplay.
Where he ends up: James is the protagonist of Rusty Lake: Roots (1860–1935). He inherits William's estate, plants the mysterious seed, marries Mary, fathers the triplets, and dies in 1870 trying to recreate the Elixir. Seeing him as a swaddled infant in 1839 is exactly the kind of connective tissue this prequel exists for.
Kate the Maid & the Servant (You)
Kate is the live-in maid and the only permanent member of staff left at the Vanderboom House after the mysterious disappearance of her brother — one of many staff members who "went missing" after prying into the family's affairs. She greets you on arrival, has you sign the employment contract (with a crow feather, naturally), and hands out every daily task. She repeatedly warns you not to meddle, and her visible exhaustion and barely-concealed terror became one of the most-commented details in reviews. Near the end of the game she flees the house — but has a change of heart and returns to rescue baby James.
The servant (you) is the unnamed new hire working the weekend. You sign the contract, receive the Servant's Notebook, and perform every chore. The game never gives you a name or voice; you're the camera through which the family's dysfunction unfolds, and your own fate is quietly hinted at by Kate's warnings — and by William's opening line to "the next unfortunate servant."
Kate is both the story's conscience and the game's de-facto quest log: she issues the next task and nudges you forward. If a day stalls, go back and talk to her — she advances the chapter every time. Walkthrough order for each task is in the walkthrough guide.
Rustie the Cat & Harvey the Parrot
The estate's two animals are both series veterans hiding in plain sight.
Rustie the Cat is the Vanderboom family cat, and the Rusty Lake Wiki confirms the note in the kitchen — "Don't forget to feed Rustie" — refers to him. His routine: on Day 1 you feed him a dead rat so he drops the matches you need for the stove, and he later coughs up a sticky substance used to glue Alexandra's broken teacup (the secret matcha latte achievement requires feeding him tea first). On Day 2 he hides in William's clock, on Day 3 he goes missing (found behind a log), and in the final act he trades you a hairpin for a piece of meat so you can pick the lock of the cage.
Harvey is the parrot — and one of the oldest characters in the Rusty Lake universe. He's introduced across the series as Laura's pet parrot, but the Rusty Lake Wiki reveals the deeper story: Harvey was originally hired as a servant by Aldous Vanderboom and took his parrot form after drinking an unperfected version of the Elixir. He's in Servant of the Lake on Day 3, where one hidden achievement has you feed him elixir during the alchemy scene — a wink at how he got his feathers in the first place. Where's the connection to your own job? You and Harvey are both servants of the Vanderbooms; he just got further along.
The Masked Figure — What We Know (and Don't)
Several times during the weekend — the Night Watch's strange spots, the ajar upstairs door, the garden door, and the attic ladder finale — you glimpse a masked figure watching from the dark. The game never names them outright in the main story; the official wiki's location list for the game includes "The Cave of the Lady of the Lake," tying the post-game sequence to the lake's mysterious lady, and the figure appears again in the post-story content.
Fan theories connect the masked figure to the Elixir storyline and to William's arc (the post-game chain is literally titled "you've found him"), but Rusty Lake hasn't confirmed an identity as of this writing. Treat anything beyond "it appears at the Night Watch and in the cave" as speculation. We'll update this page if the devs confirm more.
