DayZ Zombies Guide: Infected Types, Behavior & How to Fight Them

DayZ's zombies — officially "the infected" — are slow, relentless, and absolutely lethal in groups: they detect you by sight and sound, they chase through buildings, and a horde in a city will stunlock you to death faster than any player will. They're not the biggest threat in DayZ (other players are), but they're the one you face every single run, and knowing their types, detection rules and fight patterns is what separates a loot run from a respawn.

This guide covers what the infected are, every type since Update 1.13, how their AI actually works, the melee and gun tactics that win fights, and how to loot infected-heavy cities without turning them into your grave.

What the Infected Are

In DayZ lore, the infected are humans permanently driven into a "blood-thirsty rage" by an unknown pathogen — the official DayZ Wiki page notes nothing is known about the pathogen that "has devastated the populations of South Zagoria in Chernarus and the Topolin..." region. They were the original draw of the DayZ mod in 2012 (they were the entire game then), and in the standalone they've been rebuilt twice — most importantly in Update 1.13 (October 2022), which introduced distinct infected types rather than one uniform walker.

Per the DayZ Wiki's Infected page, an infected "is a human infected with an unknown pathogen that causes them to permanently enter a blood-thirsty rage" — the in-game framing for the zombies that patrol every town, military base and road on all maps.

The Infected Types (Since Update 1.13)

Update 1.13 reworked the infected into multiple variants that differ in toughness, appearance and loot. The commonly documented categories:

  • Regular (civilian) infected — the standard walkers in their pre-outbreak clothes. Slow, moderate HP, hit hard enough to matter. They're the bulk of every town's population.
  • Military infected — tougher, often wearing helmets and gear (some sources describe armored variants), with noticeably more HP and better loot on death. They patrol military bases, airfields and checkpoints — expect them where the good loot is.
  • Special variants — Update 1.13's "special" infected cover the outliers: heavily geared or visually distinct infected that spawn in specific locations (including the infected officers with hip holsters at military convoys, who are the 40%-chance drop source for Livonia's punched cards — see the Livonia map guide).

The practical difference: military and special infected are not worth meleeing unless you have to. They absorb hits, hit back harder, and draw every other infected in earshot.

How Infected AI Works: Sight, Sound & Doors

Understanding detection is 80% of not dying to zombies:

  • Sight — infected spot you from a significant distance (they have better "eyes" than their posture suggests). Crouching, staying behind cover, and moving at night reduce detection.
  • Sound — gunshots, sprinting, breaking doors, and melee hits all attract infected from far away. One unsuppressed gunshot in a town can pull a horde from two blocks over. Suppressors are the difference between a quiet loot run and a running battle.
  • Pursuit — once aggroed, they chase with surprising persistence, and they will enter buildings after you. They can also smash through many doors and some windows given time.
  • Doors and windows — a common belief is "zombies can't open doors," which is half true: they can't politely open them, but they do break some doors down and climb/wade through broken windows. Never assume a closed door is a wall.
The aggro chain is the real killer

The infected fight isn't the danger — the chain is. Hit one infected, and every infected in earshot joins. Fire a gun in a city, and you get a parade. Plan your fights so the noise doesn't compound: kill with one melee hit, move between kills, and if a horde forms, break line of sight and circle — they lose you surprisingly fast if you stay quiet and out of sight.

How to Fight: Melee, Guns & Escape

Melee tactics (the early game):

  • Headshots. Heavy attacks (or the right weapon) to the head kill in fewer hits than body shots. A hatchet, pickaxe or machete one-two to the head is the standard early kit.
  • Back away between swings. Never let them surround you; keep one in front, hit, step back, hit. Infected are slow enough to kite indefinitely.
  • Funnel them. In a house, back into a doorway so only one comes through at a time. Fighting in an open field against 5+ is how you die.
  • Never fight a horde in a confined room — they stunlock. If a group forms, leave the building and reset the chase.

Gun tactics:

  • Shots attract. Use firearms only when you can handle the aggro: suppressors, or kill-and-move so you're not standing where the noise happened.
  • Headshots with guns are similarly decisive; a silenced .22 or pistol is the standard city-clearing tool.
  • Military infected — use guns, not melee. Kite them one at a time and headshot.

Escape:

  • Infected lose interest if you break line of sight, stay quiet and get distance. Climbing through a window and crouching behind the building often drops the chase entirely.
  • If you're bleeding, bandage FIRST — the blood trail and the damage tick will kill you before the infected finish you. Our sickness chart covers wound infection from dirty bandages if you skip the disinfection step.

Looting Infected-Heavy Cities Safely

Cities are where the loot is and where the infected are thickest. The professional approach:

  1. Enter quiet. Crouch, avoid sprinting, and let the infected's patrol patterns work for you.
  2. Loot buildings, not streets. Buildings have far fewer infected than roads and alleys; enter, clear the room, loot, exit. If infected pile at the door, leave and re-enter or use a window.
  3. Use the noise economy. A single distant gunshot pulls infected AWAY from where you are — some players deliberately trigger noise on one side of a town to loot the other.
  4. Military zones — bring a suppressor or accept the fight. The loot justifies the noise at NWAF and Tisy, but only if you're equipped to survive the chain.
The knife is the quietest weapon

A knife or hatchet to the head is silent and infinite-use (with durability). The best city-clearing kit is: knife/hatchet for singles, a suppressed pistol for emergencies, and bandages + disinfectant always on hand. Silence is survival — every player within 500 meters also heard that gunshot.

Are DayZ Zombies the Biggest Threat?

No — other players are. The infected are the constant pressure, but they're predictable: you can learn to fight them reliably within a few hours. Players are not predictable, and DayZ's whole design (no map markers, visible bases, global voice) exists to create player encounters. The infected are the reason you're quiet, armed and bandaged; players are the reason you're careful about which fights you take. That's the same threat ladder every veteran describes: infected → environment (cold, sickness, falls) → other survivors.

That said, the infected are the most common death on fresh runs — not because they're hard, but because new players fight them wrong (in the open, in groups, without headshots). Fix that and they become background noise.

DayZ Zombies FAQ

Are there zombies in DayZ?

Yes — officially called "the infected," they're the game's PvE core: slow, relentless, and dangerous in groups. They've been in DayZ since the original ARMA 2 mod in 2012.

How many types of infected are there in DayZ?

Since Update 1.13 there are distinct types: regular civilian infected, tougher military infected (often armored, better loot), and special variants including the military officers at convoys that drop Livonia's punched cards. Different types have different HP and loot.

Can DayZ zombies open doors?

Partially. They can't politely open doors, but they do break some doors down over time and come through broken windows. Treat a closed door as a delay, not a wall.

How do you fight zombies in DayZ?

Headshots with melee (hatchet, pickaxe, knife) kill fastest; back away between swings to avoid being surrounded; funnel them through doorways; and use suppressed guns so the noise doesn't pull a horde. Break line of sight to drop a chase.

Do DayZ zombies drop loot?

Yes, some do — military and special infected drop better loot than regular ones, and military convoy officers have a 40% chance to drop Livonia's punched card (needed for the Dambog bunker). Regular infected occasionally carry food, clothing and basic items.

Are DayZ zombies the biggest threat?

No — other players are. Infected are the constant pressure (and the most common fresh-run killer), but they're learnable and predictable. The environment (cold, sickness) and other survivors are what end veteran runs.

The Bottom Line

DayZ's infected are a threat you solve with knowledge, not gear: learn the types (civilian vs military vs special), respect the sight-and-sound detection, fight with headshots and doorways, and never let noise compound into a horde. Solve that and cities become loot dispensaries instead of death traps — leaving the real threat, other players, as the only thing you truly have to fear. For the weapons to bring into those fights, see our guns guide; for the injuries they inflict, the sickness chart; and for quieter maps where infected thin out, the Sakhal map guide and Livonia map guide both cover wildlife-heavy alternatives.
