Map of Chernarus DayZ — Full Guide to Spawns, Military Bases & Loot Tiers

Chernarus is DayZ's original map: a 230 km² hand-crafted post-Soviet landscape inspired by the North Bohemia region of the Czech Republic, and still the default DayZ experience in 2026. You spawn on the southern coast with nothing, work inland through farmland and forest towns for mid-tier gear, then push to the far-north military bases — the Northwest Airfield (NWAF) and Tisy — for the best weapons in the game. Everything about the map rewards heading north, and everything dangerous happens on the way.

This guide covers the full Chernarus breakdown: the terrain and its real-world inspiration, every coastal spawn area, the complete military-POI map with what each base actually drops, the loot-tier system that governs the whole economy, the city of Chernogorsk, and how to navigate a map with no markers.

Chernarus at a Glance: Size, Setting and How It Plays

Chernarus is a fictional post-Soviet country on the Black Sea, and the playable map is roughly a 15×15 km area of its coastline. On size, sources split slightly: the current DayZ Steam store page lists 230 km², while the DayZ Wiki and hosting guides (RespawnHost among them) commonly cite 225 km² (about 181 km² of actual land). Treat "roughly 225–230 km²" as the honest answer — it is bigger than Livonia (~163–168 km²) and Sakhal (~80–105 km²) by a wide margin.

Per the official DayZ Steam store page, Chernarus is "a sprawling 230 km² post-Soviet landscape, remains the quintessential DayZ experience. This community favorite is a hand-crafted terrain, inspired by real-world locations in North Bohemia of the Czech Republic."

The map is mid-autumn, cold but not freezing, and built around three east-west bands that define how everyone plays it:

  • The coast (south): spawn towns, civilian loot, the PvP slaughterhouse where fresh spawns fight over cans of beans.
  • The midlands (center): farmland villages, police stations, hunting gear — where you graduate from sticks to rifles.
  • The north: dense forest and the military ring — NWAF, Tisy, Vybor Military Compound — where the best gear and the best players live.

Chernarus vs Livonia vs Sakhal, quickly:

Map Size Setting Best for
Chernarus ~225–230 km² Post-Soviet coastline, big cities, NWAF/Tisy hotspots The classic DayZ experience, modded servers
Livonia ~163–168 km² Polish-inspired inland forests, small towns, military ring Survival purists, hunting, denser encounters
Sakhal (Frostline DLC) ~80–105 km² Volcanic winter island, coal, hot springs, gas zones Hardcore cold-weather survival

Every Coastal Spawn and the First-Hour Route

Fresh spawns on Chernarus appear along the entire southern coast, roughly evenly distributed between the main cities. There is no choice of spawn — you wake up wherever the server puts you, usually within sight of the sea, with nothing but a glowstick in your pocket.

The main spawn zones, west to east:

  • Balota / Kamenka (far west): quiet start, the Balota Airfield nearby is a classic early military loot spot with moderate traffic.
  • Chernogorsk (southwest): the map's biggest city — see the dedicated section below. High loot, high traffic, high death rate.
  • Elektrozavodsk (south-central): the industrial power plant town; the most contested spawn city after Chernogorsk. Medical buildings and a police station.
  • Kamyshovo / Solnichniy (southeast): the classic fresh-spawn beach towns with fishing spots and junk-tier loot, plus a train line north.
  • Berezino (east): the largest eastern town, split into three districts along the river; a natural first stop before heading north to Krasnostav.
  • Svetlojarsk (far east): quiet, out of the way, good for a slow start; the east coast road runs all the way north past the NEAF.

The first-hour route that works

Spawn on the coast → immediately find a knife (or craft a stone knife from two small stones) → hit the nearest village water pump and fill a canteen or bottle → loot 3-4 houses for food, clothing and a backpack → cut spare clothes into rags → then walk inland along the road network, not the coast. The coast is where fresh spawns kill each other; the midlands are where you actually gear up. Check our crafting guide for the fire-and-splint recipes you will need on the way.

The Midland Towns and Police-Station Route

The middle band of Chernarus is farmland, forest and ruined villages, connected by one of the most useful features on the map: the northern highway, which runs from the coast up through the center and ends near Tisy. KarmaKrew's map guide calls it "an easy loot route that you can not miss" — and warns it is also one of the most traveled roads on the map, so expect company.

Key midland locations:

  • Stary Sobor / Novy Sobor: the classic central crossroads towns, a church landmark and constant PvP. The surrounding area has been a hotspot since the ARMA 2 DayZ mod days.
  • Gorka: small, quiet, north of Novy Sobor; a good staging point with a water pump.
  • Zelenogorsk (southwest-center): a large town with a police station and the key route west toward VMC.
  • Vybor and the Vybor Military Compound (VMC): VMC is the closest high-tier military loot to the midlands, walled with barracks and tents — the community's standard "first real military base."
  • Green Mountain: a radio tower hill with a water well, famous as a meeting point and ambush spot.
  • Devil's Castle (Krona Castle): a ruined castle in the southwest with nothing to loot but the best vantage point in the region.
  • Kamensk Military Base (north-center): the first northern-tier military site most players reach; worth it but often looted.

The standard mid-game loop is: police stations and hunting stands in the midland towns → VMC for your first military rifle → then commit to the northern bases.

The Northern Military Bases: NWAF, Tisy and the Endgame

Chernarus's endgame is the northern military ring, and loot quality rises with latitude. The community tiers them roughly like this:

Base Location What it drops Traffic
Vybor Military Compound (VMC) West-central, near Vybor AKs, M4s, military clothing, the gateway base High
Kamensk Military Base North-center Mid-tier military, decent for solo players Medium
NWAF (Northwest Airfield) West-north Hangars, tents, ATC tower — assault rifles, scopes, NVGs Very high
NEAF (Krasnostav Airfield) Northeast Same tier as NWAF, smaller footprint Medium-high
Myshkino Tents Far west Tent camp with military loot, no structures to clear Medium
Tisy Military Base Far northwest The highest-tier loot in DayZ: M4s, plate carriers, NVGs, the "endgame" base Medium (surprisingly low traffic per the community)

Tisy is the crown jewel. It is a huge complex — barracks, warehouses, a medical block — in the far northwest corner, and the r/DayZ community consistently describes it as having the best loot on the map with "weirdly not a lot of player traffic," because the walk is long and the land mines (literal explosive mines) at the southern approach filter out the unprepared. NWAF, by contrast, is the most visited military base in the game; expect snipers in the treeline and squads working the hangars in rotation.

Mines and the Tisy approach

The field south of Tisy is planted with explosive mines. Do not sprint through the grass; move along the road or the western treeline and watch for the distinctive ground textures. This kills more geared players than the PvP does.

Also note the dynamic content: helicopter crash sites spawn across the map with top-tier loot and guaranteed infected guards, and the south coast gets occasional dynamic police situations (checkpoints, crash scenes). The west of the map has a vanilla military location players call West Evacuation — out on the map edge, surprisingly well stocked for how far it is.

Chernogorsk: The Biggest City on the Map

Chernogorsk (often just "Cherno") is the largest city in DayZ and sits on the southwest coast. It is a full urban sprawl: the residential grid in the center, the industrial docks and the power station on the east side, a hospital (rare and valuable), a police station, and the famous apartment blocks. It is simultaneously the best early-game loot location on the coast and one of the most dangerous places on the map, because every fresh spawn on the western coast funnels through it.

Practical Chernogorsk intel:

  • Hospital (center-north): medical gear — tetracycline, morphine, IV kits, and occasionally the rare epinephrine. Hit it early in a server's life cycle before it gets stripped.
  • Police station (center-west): pistols, vests and the occasional shotgun; the #1 PvP hotspot in the city.
  • Industrial east: the power plant and docks spawn tools (hatchets, hammers, nails) that you need for base building.
  • Apartments: five-story blocks with junk-tier loot but great sniping positions over the main road.

The correct way to play Cherno: loot the edges, avoid the main intersections, treat every open door as an ambush, and leave inland by nightfall. It is a staging town, not a destination — the loot that matters is north.

How to Navigate Chernarus (No Map Markers, Ever)

DayZ gives you no minimap, no markers and no HUD arrows — the store page is explicit that you will find "no map markers, mini-maps, or navigational HUDs." Navigation is a skill, and Chernarus is the map where you learn it:

  • Paper map + compass: the classic combo. The paper map item shows the terrain and grid; each grid square is 1 km.
  • Road signs and town signs: every village has a sign at its entrances; the northern highway is the map's spine.
  • The GPS receiver: pairs with the paper map and shows live grid coordinates — the single best navigation item in the game.
  • Interactive maps: the community-standard WOBO Chernarus map and the iZurvive app plot every town, base, water source and loot icon. Run one on a second screen and cross-reference the grid references — it turns "where am I" into a non-issue. See our interactive map guide for the full tool comparison.
  • Landmark-based orientation: coast in the south, highway in the middle, military in the north. If you can find the sea, you can always reset your bearings.

DayZ Chernarus FAQ

How big is the Chernarus map in DayZ?

About 225–230 km². The current Steam store page says 230 km², while the DayZ Wiki and several hosting guides cite 225 km² (roughly 181 km² of land in a 15×15 km area). It is DayZ's largest official map, ahead of Livonia (~163–168 km²) and Sakhal (~80–105 km²).

Where do you spawn on Chernarus?

Along the entire southern coast, from Balota/Kamenka in the west to Svetlojarsk in the east. The main spawn towns are Chernogorsk, Elektrozavodsk, Kamyshovo, Solnichniy and Berezino. Spawns are random per server, and official servers roll a fresh one every time you respawn.

What is the best military base in Chernarus?

Tisy Military Base in the far northwest has the best loot in the game (M4s, plate carriers, NVGs), but the walk is long and mines guard the approach. The Northwest Airfield (NWAF) is the most visited and best all-round base; VMC is the classic first military stop.

Where is Chernogorsk on the Chernarus map?

Chernogorsk is the biggest city in DayZ, on the southwest coast about halfway between Balota and Elektrozavodsk. Landmarks: the hospital in the center-north, the police station in the center-west, and the industrial docks/power station on the east side.

Is Chernarus based on a real place?

Yes — loosely. The DayZ Steam description says Chernarus is "inspired by real-world locations in North Bohemia of the Czech Republic." It is a fictional post-Soviet country, but the architecture, road layouts and atmosphere are drawn from real Czech countryside.

The Bottom Line

Chernarus is DayZ in its purest form: spawn south, survive the coast, gear through the midlands, and fight for the north. Learn the three-band layout — coast, highway, military ring — and the map stops being scary. The loot-tier system (coastal junk → midland police → VMC → NWAF/Tisy) is the entire game's progression, and the interactive tools above turn navigation into a solved problem.
