The complete DayZ Namalsk guide: the free mod map's EVR storms, True Winter, every key location, and the space-suit endgame to Lantia.
DayZ Map Namalsk Guide: EVR Storm, Bunker & Survival Tips
Namalsk is the legendary free community mod map — a tiny, frozen archipelago where hourly EVR storms knock you unconscious, True Winter drains your health permanently, and a genuine endgame quest (build a space suit, open a portal, reach the hidden Lantia) waits at the bottom of the map. Created by Adam "Sumrak" Franců — now the Creative Lead on DayZ itself — and released for DayZ Standalone on December 3, 2020, it remains the most influential modded map in the game, and it's PC-only.
This guide covers what Namalsk actually is, the mechanics that make it lethal (EVR storm, frostbite, True Winter), every key location, the space-suit endgame, and how to install and survive it.

What Is Namalsk? (A Community Mod, Not Vanilla)
Namalsk is not part of the base game — it's a free community mod by Adam "Sumrak" Franců, whose Namalsk work dates back to the ARMA 2 mod era (2012) and who now works at Bohemia as DayZ's Creative Lead. The DayZ Standalone version of the map released on December 3, 2020 through Steam Workshop, and it has stayed one of the most popular modded maps on PC ever since.
Two mods work together to make Namalsk what it is:
- Namalsk Island — the terrain mod (the map itself).
- Namalsk Survival — the code mod that powers the signature mechanics: frostbite sickness, the EVR storm, and the endgame quest.
The map loads without Namalsk Survival, but the signature systems won't function — most servers run both. And because it's a PC mod, Namalsk is not available on consoles; it's one of the clearest reasons PC and console DayZ players live in different worlds (see the crossplay guide for how those pools split).
Per the Namalsk Survival Guide on Steam Community: "Namalsk is made of three islands, and your main goal will be to head to the main island down South" — the map's structure is literally a north-to-south gauntlet where the best content is at the bottom.

The EVR Storm: Namalsk's Signature Threat
The EVR storm is a recurring, server-wide event and the first thing every Namalsk player learns to fear:
- Warning signs: you hear eerie, distant children's calls, and your screen shifts to a sepia tone, then a deep yellow.
- The hit: caught in the open when it lands, you're knocked unconscious and take heavy damage — community reports describe losing roughly half your health — and you wake up injured seconds to minutes later.
- Surviving it: get inside a building, close all the doors, go prone, and wait it out. Or wear the APSI — a headgear found around the Athena Research Institute that shields you from the EMP-like waves. You activate it (default L key) when a storm begins, and it drains its battery hard, so carry spares.
- Server tuning: admins control storm frequency; some hardcore configs space them to roughly every few hours. Timing varies between communities, so check server rules.
If your screen turns yellow, you have seconds. The nearest door is the only safe place — sprinting "one more field over" is how you wake up bleeding on the ice with half your health gone. Namalsk veterans treat the storm warning like an air-raid siren: drop everything, get inside.
True Winter, Cold & Frostbite
Namalsk simulates what the community calls "True Winter" — it's significantly colder than vanilla Chernarus, effectively Arctic-Circle conditions. Two things make it harder than Sakhal's official cold:
- Frostbite sickness — specific to the Namalsk Survival mod: prolonged cold exposure causes lasting health damage rather than just shivering. It's the clearest mechanical difference from the official Sakhal map.
- The underlying cold system still follows vanilla DayZ rules: clothing insulation driven by material, thickness, condition and wetness; wet or damaged gear sharply reduces warmth.
First priorities on spawn are therefore: warm layers, a heat source, and dry clothing. Fires are central — they warm you, dry your kit, and thaw frozen food, which on Namalsk often must be cooked or warmed before you can eat it. If you want the mechanics of fire-making, our crafting guide covers fireplace recipes and hand-drill kits.
Key Locations on Namalsk
Namalsk is small and dense, so locations matter more than on sprawling maps. The verified landmarks:
| Location | Role | Loot tier |
|---|---|---|
| Vorkuta | The map's only city; main early-game hub with food, water and starter gear | Early-game |
| Northern Army Base | Accessible military area close to spawns, near a lake for fishing | Early/mid |
| Sebjan Dam | One of the few land bridges between north and south; a notorious PvP chokepoint | Mid |
| Tara | Industrial/harbor area; source of crafting filaments for the endgame space suit | Mid/industrial |
| Athena Research Institute | Late-game hotspot and major PvP zone; APSI, Pulsar Locator and high-tier loot | Late-game/high |
| Lantia | Hidden endgame area reached only via the portal sequence | Endgame |
Vorkuta in the north anchors most fresh-spawn runs because it holds the highest concentration of early loot. Sebjan Dam is where players funnel when crossing the map, making it a constant fight. Athena is the true prize: its two largest buildings and scattered barracks hold medical and military gear, and it's where the APSI and Pulsar Locator appear — but expect snipers on every approach.
The Endgame: Space Suit, Portal & Lantia
Namalsk has a genuine endgame quest — a rarity in DayZ:
- Gather crafting filaments — sourced from the Tara industrial areas.
- Build the LEHS Mk3 space suit — the components and filaments come together into the full suit.
- Find a Pulsar Locator — appears at Athena and the oil rig.
- Open the portal — use a control panel deep inside Athena during an EVR storm to activate the portal.
- Reach Lantia — the hidden endgame area with unique rewards.
The exact recipe and step order have shifted across updates and are deliberately obscure — the Steam Community guide and Namalsk community Discords are the living references. What's consistent is the shape: Namalsk is the only major DayZ map where the "final boss" is a puzzle-quest rather than a loot run, and the Lantia reveal is the reason veterans keep returning between wipes.
Lantia runs are contested endgame content: the portal opens during a storm (when everyone is sheltering or dying), and the space suit is a long build. The standard advice is 2–3 players: one watches the control room, one operates, one holds the exit. Solo players can do it — there are even Workshop mods to make it soloable — but expect multiple attempts.
How to Install Namalsk
- PC only. Subscribe to Namalsk Island and Namalsk Survival on the Steam Workshop (search "Namalsk" — Sumrak's are the ones with the huge subscriber counts).
- Let the launcher do the work. Launch DayZ, let the DayZ Launcher download the mods, then filter the server browser for "Namalsk" servers and join — the launcher syncs the server's mod loadout.
- Start on a community server with lower population to learn the map before jumping into a full PvP server. Our mods guide covers the launcher and load-order basics in detail.
DayZ Namalsk FAQ
Is Namalsk free in DayZ?
Yes — Namalsk is a free community mod (Namalsk Island + Namalsk Survival) distributed via the Steam Workshop. It's PC-only; consoles don't support Workshop mods.
How do you install Namalsk in DayZ?
Subscribe to Namalsk Island and Namalsk Survival on the Steam Workshop, launch DayZ so the launcher downloads them, then join a Namalsk server from the browser (the launcher syncs the server's mod list). It's the same install flow as any DayZ mod.
What is the EVR storm in Namalsk?
A recurring server-wide event: eerie children's calls and a sepia-to-yellow screen warn you, then the storm knocks unconscious and heavily damages anyone caught outside. Shelter in a building (doors closed, prone) or wear the APSI headgear from Athena to ride it out.
How do you get to Lantia in Namalsk?
Build the LEHS Mk3 space suit (filaments from Tara), find a Pulsar Locator (Athena or the oil rig), and use the control panel deep inside Athena during an EVR storm to open the portal to Lantia — the hidden endgame area.
Is Namalsk available on console?
No. Namalsk is a Steam Workshop mod, and Workshop mods are PC-only in DayZ. Xbox and PlayStation players get vanilla maps only.
Is Namalsk or Sakhal harder?
Namalsk is generally considered harder: the EVR storm is an event-based threat with no Sakhal equivalent, frostbite is a persistent sickness, and the tiny map keeps player density brutal. Sakhal (the official Frostline map) is the harshest vanilla map but has mercy systems — hot springs, bonfires — that Namalsk lacks.
The Bottom Line
Namalsk is DayZ's most influential map and its hardest: a free, tiny, frozen archipelago where the storm forces you indoors, the cold never lets go, and the endgame is a space-suit quest to a hidden island. Install it through the Workshop, learn to read the storm warnings, respect Vorkuta-to-Athena as a gauntlet, and treat Lantia as the raid it is. For the official winter alternative, our Sakhal guide shows how Bohemia took Namalsk's ideas and built a paid, console-friendly version — and the mods guide has the rest of the modded-map ecosystem.
