Complete DayZ Sakhal map guide: the Frostline DLC's frozen archipelago, every major POI, the Burukan bunker, and cold-weather survival.
DayZ Sakhal Map Guide: Frostline Locations, Loot & Survival
Sakhal is the frozen volcanic archipelago from the Frostline expansion (October 15, 2024, $26.99) — DayZ's smallest official map at about 83 km² of land (roughly 105 km² including ice sheets), and its hardest climate: everything freezes, snow and blizzards collapse visibility, and the map itself tries to kill you as much as the other players do. You spawn on the frozen coastline, and the entire game becomes a loop of warmth management: fires, hot springs, insulated clothing, thawing food, and pushing inland to the military sites where the real loot waits — most notably the Burukan bunker with the SVD Dragunov inside.
This guide covers the Frostline basics, every major Sakhal POI, the cold-weather mechanics that define the map, the bunker and its power puzzle, wildlife and fishing, and how Sakhal compares to the modded winter map Namalsk.

What Is Sakhal? Frostline Basics
Sakhal is a snow-covered volcanic archipelago in Russia's far east (visually inspired by the Kamchatka Peninsula), added to DayZ by the Frostline expansion — the second paid DLC after Livonia, released October 15, 2024 for $26.99 on PC, Xbox and PlayStation. The official Steam description is blunt about the pitch: it covers "83km² of winter wilderness" and makes you "face new challenges, manage the cold, and discover the beauty and peril of Sakhal."
Per the official DayZ Frostline Steam page: "Embark on an unforgiving journey in DayZ's Frostline Expansion, set within the icy Sakhal archipelago, covering 83km² of winter wilderness. Face new challenges, manage the cold, and discover the beauty and peril of Sakhal."
The map is based on a group of islands just north of Japan, featuring a volcano, frozen lakes, ice shelves, and hot springs, and it shipped with over 400 unique assets (buildings, POIs, props). Interesting trivia: the topological data is based on ARMA 3's Tanoa, per the DayZ Wiki, which is why the island layout feels familiar to ARMA veterans. Frostline also added new fish species and expanded aquatic life (steelhead trout, shrimp, pollock; hares and foxes were re-added in Update 1.26) plus the reindeer.
Sakhal at a Glance: Size and Spawns
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Size | ~83 km² of land (official); ~105 km² including ice sheets (wiki.gg) — the smallest official map |
| Setting | Volcanic archipelago, far-eastern Russia, Kamchatka-inspired, snow biome |
| Release | October 15, 2024, as part of Frostline ($26.99) |
| Spawns | Along the frozen coastline |
| First priority | Warmth: insulated clothing, gloves, fire materials, hot springs |
| Signature threat | Cold itself — heavy metal poisoning from eating snow, blizzards, frozen water |
Where you spawn: unlike Chernarus (coastline) and Livonia (inland north), Sakhal drops you along the frozen coast. Coastal villages contain fishing gear and low-tier civilian loot, which is ideal — fish and fire are the first-hour survival kit. From there you push inland toward military and industrial zones, watching the temperature gauge the entire way.

Every Major POI on Sakhal
Petropavlovsk-Sakhalskiy — one of the largest coastal settlements and the map's early-game hotspot. Harbor district loot: food, basic firearms, fishing equipment, cold-weather clothing; industrial warehouses hold tools and crafting materials. Expect heavy fresh-spawn traffic — it's the Berezino of Sakhal.
Severomorsk — a large port town near the far north. Mid-tier loot across its port, city and residential areas. The landmark: a coal-fed smokestack near the docks that burns constantly — the best heat source in walking distance, and therefore a magnet for players. Use it to warm up, but expect company.
Odinokiy Vulkan (the volcano) — the most eye-catching landmark. The dormant volcano's soot and ash contaminate local water (purify it before drinking), but geothermal activity makes the area warmer — hot springs and steam vents give you a reprieve from the cold. There's also a research outpost near the volcano with military and medical equipment, and it's the most reliable place on the map to find Scientific Briefcase Keys — which open Scientific Briefcases for random high-value gear.
Burukan — the southwest peninsula and the military crown jewel. No fresh water exists on the entire peninsula, so bring your own. It holds a wide stretch of ports, the Central Military Base, and the Burukan Bunker (details below). This is where the SVD, drum magazines and NVGs live.
Nogovo Airfield — southwest corner of the main island. Surprisingly high-tier loot for an accessible location: the KA-74 assault rifle, VSS marksman rifle, medical supplies, filtering water bottles, plated vests, landmines. It's flat with little cover and less blizzard, so fights are fast and sniper-heavy — get in, loot, get out.
Hot springs and bonfires — scattered across the map, these are the free warmth stations. Hot springs are constant heat sources; bonfires and vehicle wrecks can be lit. Between POIs, they're your refuel stops.
Spawn on the coast → find a fishing rod or coastal fishing gear + a fire (kindling + fuel, lit with matches or a hand drill kit) → thaw and cook fish → move to a hot spring to dry out → push to Severomorsk or the volcano's research outpost for mid-tier gear → then decide if you're making the Burukan run. Warmth and water come before weapons on every step.
The Burukan Bunker: Power Puzzle & Top-Tier Loot
The Burukan Bunker is Sakhal's endgame location, and it's gated by a genuine puzzle rather than just a key:
- Get a Glow Plug — these only spawn in Scientific Briefcases, and the best place to source briefcases is the research outpost near the volcano. This creates a natural route: volcano → briefcase → glow plug → Burukan.
- Get Gasoline — scrounge industrial locations around Burukan.
- Restore power — use the glow plug + gasoline at the bunker's power system.
- Open storage doors one at a time. Inside, only one storage door can be open at once via the control panel. If you try to open a second door while one is open, the system short-circuits and you need another glow plug and gasoline to reboot it.
The payoff: the SVD Dragunov, drum magazines, night vision goggles, and high-tier military attachments — some of the best loot in the game. Expect the bunker to be a fight site; anyone who sees the lights come on knows someone's inside.
Inside the Burukan bunker, never open a second door while one is open. The short-circuit burns a glow plug and gasoline you may not be able to replace — and you're now trapped near the map's most contested loot with a dead power system. Open, loot, close, repeat.
Surviving Sakhal's Cold: Mechanics You Must Know
Sakhal runs the vanilla DayZ cold system on overdrive. The non-negotiables:
- Fires are mandatory, not optional. Make fires far more often than on Chernarus; they warm you, dry your clothes, and thaw frozen food — a huge part of Sakhal's loot is frozen and must be warmed before eating.
- Heavy metal poisoning. Eating snow gives you Heavy Metal Poisoning, a new illness added with Frostline. Melting snow for water requires boiling; don't shortcut it.
- Insulated clothing is the real armor. Winter jackets, gloves and boots with high insulation values matter more than anything in your inventory. Getting wet or wearing damaged gear drops warmth fast.
- Fishing is viable but not inland. Frostline made inland fishing non-viable because lakes freeze; fish along the coast instead.
- Blizzards change combat. Long-range engagements are common in open snow, but visibility collapses in storms — fights start close and end fast.
Per the DayZ Wiki's Frostline page, the expansion's winter systems include "frozen foods that can be warmed up using fireplaces," snow-eating causing "Heavy Metal Poisoning, a new illness found in Sakhal," and the map's reworked wildlife — the official documentation of Sakhal's cold mechanics.
Sakhal vs Namalsk: Which Winter Map Is Harder?
Players constantly compare the official winter map to the legendary mod map. The honest breakdown:
| Sakhal (official, Frostline) | Namalsk (mod, free) | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | ~83 km² | Smaller, denser archipelago |
| Cost | $26.99 DLC | Free (PC mod) |
| Signature threats | Blizzards, heavy metal poisoning, freezing | EVR storms, frostbite sickness, True Winter |
| Endgame | Burukan bunker (glow plug puzzle) | Space suit + portal to Lantia |
| Wildcards | Reindeer, fishing, boats, hot springs | EMP storms, deep lore |
| Availability | All platforms | PC only |
Namalsk is generally considered the harder map — its EVR storm can knock you unconscious for half your health, frostbite is a persistent sickness, and the map is tiny so player density is brutal. Sakhal is harder than Chernarus or Livonia but friendlier than Namalsk: the threats are mechanical (cold, snow, poison) rather than event-based, and hot springs give you mercy points Namalsk never offers. Our Namalsk map guide has the full breakdown if you want the modded extreme.
DayZ Sakhal FAQ
Is Sakhal free in DayZ?
No — Sakhal is part of the Frostline expansion, a paid DLC released October 15, 2024 for $26.99 on PC, Xbox and PlayStation. Livonia is the free official map; Sakhal is the paid winter one.
How big is the Sakhal map in DayZ?
About 83 km² of land per the official store description; the DayZ Wiki lists 105 km² total including ice sheets. It's the smallest official DayZ map — smaller than Chernarus (~225–230 km²) and Livonia (~163–168 km²), and roughly comparable to the modded Namalsk in density.
Where do you spawn on Sakhal?
Along the frozen coastline. Unlike Livonia's inland spawns or Chernarus's south coast, Sakhal's spawns ring the whole archipelago, and coastal villages with fishing gear are your first stop.
How do you get into the Burukan bunker on Sakhal?
Find a Glow Plug (Scientific Briefcases, best sourced at the volcano research outpost) and Gasoline (industrial areas), restore power at the bunker, then open the storage doors one at a time via the control panel — opening a second door while one is open shorts the system and costs another glow plug + gasoline. Inside: SVD Dragunov, drum mags, NVGs.
Can you eat snow in DayZ Sakhal?
Not safely. Eating snow causes Heavy Metal Poisoning, a Frostline illness. Melt and boil snow for water, or use purification tablets on other sources.
Is Sakhal or Namalsk harder?
Namalsk is generally considered harder: EVR storms can knock you out, frostbite is a persistent sickness, and its tiny map means constant player pressure. Sakhal is the harshest official map (cold, blizzards, heavy metal poisoning) but has mercy systems — hot springs, bonfires — that Namalsk lacks.
The Bottom Line
Sakhal is DayZ's hard-mode official map: a small frozen archipelago where warmth is the first resource, snow is poison, and the best loot sits behind a power puzzle at Burukan. Master the loop — fish, fire, hot springs, insulated clothing, then volcano-briefcase-Burukan — and you own the map. It's also the closest official experience to Namalsk, which makes it the perfect stepping stone before you try the modded extreme.
