Varsh Ko'kuu in Baldur's Gate 3: Location, Egg Quest and Outcomes

Varsh Ko'kuu is the githyanki caretaker of the Hatchery at Crèche Y'llek in Act 1 — the NPC standing watch over the last githyanki egg, and the key to resolving the "Steal a Githyanki Egg" quest started by Lady Esther at the Mountain Pass. You can talk him into handing over the egg, steal it from under his nose, or fight your way through the crèche with him in the crossfire. This guide covers who he is, exactly where to find him, every dialogue path and the rewards for each outcome.

Who Is Varsh Ko'kuu?

Varsh Ko'kuu is a githyanki charged with the Hatchery of Crèche Y'llek in Act One, per the bg3.wiki. "Varsh" is the githyanki title for an egg/child-rearing overseer — Ko'kuu personally runs the hatchery where githyanki eggs are incubated, and he takes the job seriously. He stands watch over the last remaining egg in the crèche's hatchery, and unlike most of the militant githyanki around him, his concern is genuinely for the young. That makes him one of the few sympathetic githyanki in Act 1 — and the source of a surprisingly moral dilemma in the egg quest.

Per the bg3.wiki character page, "Varsh Ko'kuu is a githyanki charged with the Hatchery of Crèche Y'llek in Act One" — his in-game quote after you ask for the egg is "You? What do you know about githyanki child-rearing?"

Where to Find Him

Ko'kuu is in the Hatchery of Crèche Y'llek, which sits inside the Rosymorn Monastery in the Mountain Pass region (the Act 1 path that follows the Githyanki Creche / Find the Githyanki Crèche quest). To reach him:

  1. Enter the Mountain Pass and the Rosymorn Monastery (from the western route or via the mountain path).
  2. Get inside the crèche proper — the entrance is through the monastery's inner area (the stained-glass puzzle leads to the main hall).
  3. Head to the Hatchery, a large cave-like room on the lower level. Ko'kuu stands on a high cliff in the middle of the room, watching the last egg; the room is guarded by Warrior Vu'un near the entrance and Raider Zar'an on the north cliff.

The egg itself rests on a special holder in the far western part of the cave. You can talk to Ko'kuu directly from the cliff area or approach via the catwalks.

The Steal a Githyanki Egg Quest: Every Path

The quest is started earlier by speaking with Lady Esther at the Mountain Pass camp — the Society of Brilliance wants a githyanki egg to incubate and raise "to soothe its violent nature," and she'll pay you for it. In the Hatchery, you have three broad routes:

Route 1 — Talk Ko'kuu into giving you the egg. This is the unique path: Ko'kuu will ask what you'd do with the egg if he let you take it. Your answer determines whether he hands it over willingly:

  • Answering that you'd raise it as your own (or similar caring responses) can win his cooperation — he's looking for someone who'll treat the egg as a life, not a payday. A successful check (Insight/Charisma-flavored) smooths the path.
  • Push too hard or threaten him and he turns hostile, forcing the combat route.

Route 2 — Steal the egg. Sneak past or distract the guards, grab the egg from its holder (Perception and Stealth checks), and slip out. Ko'kuu becomes hostile if you're spotted. This is the classic rogue route and works regardless of your dialogue skills.

Route 3 — Kill everyone. The crèche is a hostile military facility; you can fight through the Hatchery, kill Ko'kuu and the guards, and loot the egg from his body or the holder. This is usually a byproduct of the larger crèche confrontation rather than a first choice — see the outcome notes below.

What to Do With the Egg: The Consequences

The decision that actually matters is what you do after you have the egg:

Choice What happens
Give it to Lady Esther Quest complete, gold reward (she pays handsomely, and you can haggle her up front for a deposit). The egg goes to the Society of Brilliance.
Keep the egg You raise it yourself. The egg stays in your inventory/camp, and it hatches — the githyanki child appears in your camp later, with a genuinely memorable scene. This option is the one players seek out on replay.
Sell or abandon it Some vendors will buy it, but you lose the quest reward and the hatching scene.

There's no "wrong" answer mechanically — the gold route (Esther) and the story route (keep it) are both complete, and neither locks you out of the rest of Act 1. The keep-it path is the community favorite for the Act 3 payoff with the grown child.

Haggle with Esther before the heist

Lady Esther can be convinced to pay you up front before you even enter the crèche (a Persuasion check). That way the heist pays twice: her deposit, plus keeping the egg yourself if you choose. It's the most efficient path in the game for this quest.

What Happens to Ko'kuu

Ko'kuu's fate depends entirely on how the crèche arc plays out. If you resolve the egg quest peacefully, he survives and the crèche continues as normal — until the story's larger githyanki confrontation in the Inquisitor's Chamber. If you side against the crèche (or trigger its destruction), Ko'kuu dies with everyone else — players have noted he's genuinely trying to preserve the egg to the end, which is why the community's "spare Ko'kuu" threads exist. There's no way to recruit him as a companion, and no quest after the egg; he's a beautifully written one-scene character, not a party member. For the broader crèche context, our main guide's Act 1 roadmap covers the Mountain Pass sequence around him.

Do the egg quest before the crèche goes hostile

The crèche can turn hostile through the main quest (the Inquisitor's Chamber confrontation with the artefact). If that happens before you've spoken to Ko'kuu, the peaceful dialogue route is gone — you'll be fighting for the egg. Do the Hatchery visit early in the crèche's sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Varsh Ko'kuu in Baldur's Gate 3?

In the Hatchery of Crèche Y'llek, inside the Rosymorn Monastery in the Mountain Pass (Act 1). He stands on a high cliff in the middle of the hatchery room, guarding the last githyanki egg.

Who is Varsh Ko'kuu?

A githyanki with the title "Varsh" — the caretaker in charge of the Crèche Y'llek hatchery, where githyanki eggs are incubated. He's the custodian of the egg targeted by the Steal a Githyanki Egg quest.

How do I get the githyanki egg from Varsh Ko'kuu?

Talk to him and answer that you'd raise the egg as your own — caring responses can make him hand it over willingly. Alternatively, sneak past the guards and steal the egg from its holder, or fight through the Hatchery.

Should I give the githyanki egg to Lady Esther or keep it?

Giving it to Esther earns a gold reward and completes the quest; keeping it lets you raise the child yourself, with a memorable camp scene and an Act 3 payoff. The story-focused "keep it" path is the community favorite.

Can you kill Varsh Ko'kuu?

Yes — he's a hostile-eligible NPC if the Hatchery or the crèche turns against you. Killing him (or the crèche's destruction) ends his story; there's no recruitment or follow-up quest.
