Baldurs Gate Xbox: How BG3 Runs on Series X and S

Baldur's Gate 3 came to Xbox on December 7–8, 2023 — four months after the PC launch — and it's a genuinely good console port: the Series X runs it at 60 fps in performance mode, and the Series S holds 30 fps at reduced resolution. The catch that dominated pre-launch news was split-screen: the Series S launched without it, and it finally arrived in Patch 8 (April 2025). One thing to know up front: BG3 is not on Game Pass and Larian says it never will be. This guide covers performance, split-screen, crossplay, Game Pass and which Xbox to buy it for.

When BG3 Came to Xbox

  • Digital launch: December 7, 2023 (some regions list December 8 on the store page) — announced at The Game Awards.
  • Physical Deluxe Edition: Q1 2024 — the Xbox box famously needed three discs.
  • The Xbox release was delayed from the original August 2023 window specifically because of the Series S split-screen problem; Larian shipped the game without the feature rather than delay further, then fixed it 16 months later.

Series X vs Series S: Real Performance Numbers

Xbox Series X Xbox Series S
Performance mode 60 fps at 1440p–4K (dynamic) 30 fps target at 900p–1440p (dynamic)
Quality mode 30 fps at 4K with ray-traced-ish fidelity 30 fps (lower resolution)
Split-screen Yes, at launch No at launch; added in Patch 8 (April 2025)
Loading Fast (SSD) Slightly slower
Experience The full BG3 Playable, visibly softer, dips in Act 3

Player reports on r/XboxSeriesS describe the Series S version as looking "nothing like" the Series X version in motion — resolution drops as low as ~900p and Act 3's city pushes it toward 25–30 fps. It's completely playable, but it's the weakest console version of the game. The Series X is the clear pick if you can choose.

Which console should you buy it for?

Series X, full stop — 60 fps is transformative for a game this text-heavy and combat-tactical, and the Series S's dynamic resolution drops are noticeable on any modern TV. If you only have an S, you'll still have a good time — just set expectations for Act 3.

Split-Screen on Xbox: The Long Story

Split-screen co-op (two players, one console) was the single most contentious Xbox feature:

  • At launch (Dec 2023): available on Series X, missing on Series S — Larian's stated reason was the S's memory and CPU limits ("We've run into some technical issues… that have stopped us feeling 100% [about] gameplay feature parity across Xbox," per their July 2023 statement).
  • Patch 8 (April 15, 2025): split-screen finally came to Series S — one of the headline features of the final patch.
  • Since Patch 8, both consoles support local 2-player split-screen and online co-op for up to 4 players.

Crossplay and Cross-Save on Xbox

  • Crossplay: full crossplay across Xbox, PC, Mac and PS5 arrived with Patch 8 (April 2025), using the Larian Network. Xbox players can join PC lobbies and vice versa; modded lobbies require matching mods.
  • Cross-save: Xbox saves sync through the Larian Network if you link your account, and Xbox ↔ PC cross-save is supported — useful if you own the game on both platforms.
  • Xbox Cloud Gaming lists the game, but you need your own license; it's streaming your copy, not a Game Pass rental.

Is BG3 on Game Pass?

No — and Larian has been unambiguous about it. In 2023, founder Swen Vincke told IGN that BG3 "wasn't" and "is not going to be" on Game Pass:

"We made a big game, so I think there's a fair price to be paid for it… we didn't put it on Game Pass and we didn't put it on subscription because we have a big game and we don't want to devalue it."

Per the Game Developer report on the interview: "Baldur's Gate 3 has no future on Xbox Game Pass."

Since Larian has also ruled out DLC and is done with BG3 content, don't expect a late Game Pass deal — the DLC page has the full "no more content" story.

Game Pass hopes are a dead end

Every month someone asks "is BG3 on Game Pass yet?" — the answer has been no since 2023 and Larian's stated position rules it out for good. On Xbox you buy it outright: $69.99 standard, or on sale (see the sale guide).

Xbox Physical and Pricing

The Xbox version is covered in detail on the official Xbox Store page (it lists the $69.99 base and $79.99 Digital Deluxe), and Patch 8's Xbox-specific features were announced on Xbox Wire.

  • Standard digital: $69.99 (Xbox Store), 25% off during platform sales.
  • Digital Deluxe: $79.99 digital, or the $10.49 upgrade from standard.
  • Physical Deluxe box: $79.99, three discs, playable on-disc — the full breakdown is in our physical copy guide.
  • Game Pass-style deal: none, as covered above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox Game Pass?

No. Larian has repeatedly confirmed BG3 "isn't going to be" on Game Pass — the studio says the game is worth full price and won't devalue it on subscription services.

How does Baldur's Gate 3 run on Xbox Series S?

30 fps at dynamically-scaling resolution (~900p–1440p). It's playable, but it's the weakest console version, with visible dips and softness in Act 3. Series X runs at 60 fps.

Does Baldur's Gate 3 have split-screen on Xbox?

Yes — Series X had it at launch (Dec 2023); Series S only received it in Patch 8 (April 2025). Both consoles now support local split-screen and 2–4 player online co-op.

Is Baldur's Gate 3 crossplay on Xbox?

Yes, since Patch 8: full crossplay and cross-save with PC, Mac and PS5 through the Larian Network.

Which Xbox is better for Baldur's Gate 3?

Series X, by a wide margin — 60 fps performance mode, native-feeling resolution, split-screen from day one. The Series S is fine if it's all you have.
