Shift At Midnight Walkthrough — Surviving All 13 Shifts

Shift At Midnight's Story Mode runs exactly 13 randomly generated shifts, and the campaign is a survival-and-money marathon, not a scripted level list. The customer lineups, quotas, and events shift between playthroughs, so this walkthrough focuses on what's consistent: the nightly routine that works, the fixed money milestones, the key scripted events, and how each night's difficulty ramps. Play the detective loop right and you'll be set up for the True Ending by Shift 13.

How the Campaign Works

Thirteen shifts, one overarching goal: keep the store running and save the money your pet's surgery needs. The key campaign facts:

  • Every shift is randomly generated — customer lineups, quotas, and some events vary run to run. Per the official Steam store page: "Each shift is randomly generated… meaning no 2 shifts are the same."
  • Your personal funds are the only thing that matters for the ending: $10 daily wage + ~10% commission over quota. Store balance (traps, weapons, upgrades) is a separate wallet.
  • Fixed money milestones: $20 medicine after Shift 3, $40 after Shift 6, vet warns about the $250 surgery after Shift 10, and the check happens after Shift 13.
  • One branching choice: after Shift 12 you can call Sheriff Clyde or not — that call plus your $250 balance decides the ending. Full detail in the endings guide.
The nightly routine that carries the whole run

  1. Collect tokens and spin the prize wheel before touching the notice board. 2) Stock shelves, clean, take deliveries, deal with rats. 3) Serve customers with the full ID → database → 5 questions → behavior check. 4) Execute confirmed doppelgangers before payment. 5) If a hunt triggers, board up, trap, and hide. Repeat 13 times.

Shifts 1–3: Learning the Ropes

The opening nights are deliberately gentle. Community-compiled rosters (which vary between runs — treat as reference, not script) put the early lineups as mostly humans with one or two obvious doppelgangers: Night 1 commonly features Clyde Dawson, Bonnie McCree, and Kevin Larson as humans, with Nathan Calloway and Julietta Granger as early doppelgangers; Night 2 adds Natasha Lin, Emilia Carter, and the first appearance of Norbert the gnome (sources place him on shift 2 or 3).

What to focus on:

  • Learn the database rhythm. Occupation, document dates, and registered appearance vs. what the customer says — internalize it now while the stakes are low.
  • Pay the first medicine bill ($20) after Shift 3. Treatment begins; don't skip it, the schedule is fixed.
  • Resist shooting Norbert. He looks like a doppelganger and scans weird, but killing him starts a prank war (motorcycle through the store, poisoned lemonade). Let him shop and leave.

Shifts 4–6: The Difficulty Ramp

From Shift 4 the game starts mixing things up: more doppelgangers per night, repeat customers who were human earlier returning as fakes, and more "Driver" entries (the truckers who are frequent doppelganger hosts). Community rosters flag multiple doppelgangers on Nights 4–6, including Keith Hargreaves, Martha Collins, Ray Rowland, Anita Varma, Elena Park, Jade Sinclair, Ramona Delgado, and Harold Brant across those nights.

  • Pay the second medicine bill ($40) after Shift 6. Once paid, your pet arrives at the store and starts cleaning up blood and limbs for you — a genuine solo-life-saver.
  • Expect your first hunts. If you're missing doppelgangers by now, the Entity will find you at shift end. Get comfortable with boarding up, bear traps, and hiding spots.
  • Watch the repeat-customer trap. A face you cleared on Night 1 can be a doppelganger on Night 5. Scan everyone.

Shifts 7–9: The Weird Middle

This is where the story's loose threads start appearing:

  • Shifts 7–8: the Calendar Killer broadcast. After one of these nights you get a news broadcast about a serial killer who kills 8 people on the 8th of every month. He never directly appears — the community treats him as one of the game's unresolved mystery threads (see the endings guide for the full lore rundown).
  • Night 7 roster highlights (community data): Herbert (doppelganger), Louisa Mari (doppelganger, then human on her second visit), Richard McCree (doppelganger).
  • Night 9: the Clyde doppelganger. Community rosters flag a Clyde Dawson doppelganger on Night 9. This is the trap that ruins True Ending runs — players trust the familiar sheriff and let him walk. Scan him like anyone else.
Don't shoot the real Clyde

The real Sheriff Clyde visits regularly and is one of the game's only friendly recurring humans. Killing him removes the option to call him after Shift 12, which locks you out of the Grave Decision ending and takes away your safety net for the True Ending.

Shifts 10–12: Money Pressure

The campaign's third act is a financial stress test:

  • After Shift 10, the vet warns you: the surgery is urgent, and you need $250 in personal funds by Shift 13.
  • Shifts 10–12 rosters get doppelganger-heavy (community data: Rudnick Wex, Vivien Marrow, Net Pongsak, Dylan Pike, Agnes Wells, Ethan Voss, Yasmin Carvalho, Maya Davila, Diana Volkov, Barry Aoki — a brutal late gauntlet).
  • After Shift 12 you get the call decision. Call Clyde → Grave Decision path (pet lives, Clyde dies). Don't call → the ending depends on your $250 balance.

Keep serving fast, keep the shop rated high, and keep collecting tokens. If you're short of $250, remember the Shift 13 payout lands before the vet check, so a gap of a few dollars can still close.

Shift 13: The Finale

The last night plays out and then the vet checks your balance. The result is decided by two things only:

Your call after Shift 12 Personal funds Ending
Don't call Clyde ≥ $250 True Ending
Call Clyde anything Grave Decision
Don't call Clyde < $250 Empty Home

After the credits, Endless Mode unlocks (currently in beta) — a free-form survival mode that removes the campaign structure and throws escalating conditions at you. The July 29 patch added "Rakes" — monsters that emerge from the forest and must be shot before reaching the playable area — specifically for Endless and post-story play.

Random Events & Special Customers

Beyond the lineups, random events keep runs honest:

  • Blood Moon: a guaranteed Entity hunt at shift end, no matter how clean you played.
  • Norbert the gnome: occasional visits, increasingly chaotic if you've harmed him before.
  • Drivers: the trucker "Driver" entries are disproportionately doppelgangers across community rosters.
  • Store manager requests: catch shoplifters and other tasks for bonus pay.
  • The emotion scanner: a tool that reads customer mood — treat it as a puzzle piece, not a verdict.

Late-Game Strategy Checklist

  • Tokens + wheel every night before the board
  • Never shoot humans (each kill docks ~$15 and your rating)
  • Execute doppelgangers before payment
  • Keep shelves stocked and the checkout moving
  • Only buy pet medicine on schedule; bank the rest
  • Trap and hide instead of fighting when the Entity comes
