RimWorld terms and slang explained: Scaria, Quadrum (15-day season), Glitterworld, Unwaveringly Loyal, Dirtmoles, Creepjoiners, biological vs chronological age.
RimWorld Scaria, Quadrum, Glitterworld — Complete Terms & Slang Dictionary
RimWorld's community speaks its own slang, and the in-game tutorial explains almost none of it. People searching "rimworld scaria" or "rimworld terms" are usually stuck on pawn, colony wealth, mental break, Thrumbo or Randy while reading guides, browsing Reddit or setting up mods. This dictionary covers every concept you'll actually meet — mechanic terms, creature events, DLC-specific words and community slang — each with its official wiki reference.

Core Mechanic Terms
Pawn
The engine's umbrella term for every living thing — your colonists, raiders, animals and prisoners are all pawns. "My pawns" = my colonists. It's the single most common word in RimWorld discussions; every guide assumes you know it.
Colony wealth
The total value of everything your colony owns: buildings, items, colonists, animals. It drives one of the game's most important hidden mechanics — raid difficulty scales with wealth. Wealth control is a real strategy, not paranoia; the full playbook is in our colony guide.
Mental break
The out-of-control state a pawn enters when mood bottoms out: smashing things, wandering, catatonia — and arson for pyromaniacs. It's the core chain reaction in colony collapse — the cook breaks down → nobody cooks → everyone starves into breaks. The anti-break kit: cooked food, decent bedrooms, recreation.
Raid points
The game's "budget" for each raid's difficulty, decided by wealth, storyteller and difficulty together. The wiki's Wealth management page states wealth counts toward raids up to 1,000,000 and raid points cap at 10,000.
Storyteller
The AI "director" that generates events. Three default storytellers: Cassandra Classic (steady escalation), Phoebe Chillax (long calm stretches), Randy Random (pure random, community favorite). "Randy" is slang: "playing Randy" = playing chaos.
Scaria: The Rage Disease (Main Word Deep Dive)
Scaria is the disease that sends animals and humans into a berserk state — the official wiki is explicit: it spreads through bites/scratches from infected beings, any non-infection wound carries scaria, and infected creatures attack indiscriminately. Key points:
- Berserk manhunter packs are a staple mid-game event.
- Scaria is curable: order surgery "Cure scaria" on a downed infected creature — after curing, it can be tamed (the forums confirmed since 1.1 that cured manhunters can become pets).
- Scaria corpses: safe or not depends on rot — fully rotten ones can't be used, unrotten ones process normally (community-tested: edible, though many players can't get past the idea).
Time and Age Terms
Quadrum (15-day season)
A RimWorld year is only 60 days, split into 4 quadra of 15 days (roughly spring/summer/autumn/winter). The wiki's Time page defines it exactly: 1 quadrum = 900,000 ticks. So "the third quadrum" means the autumn-winter transition.
Chronological age vs biological age
Chronological age = real time since birth; biological age = how aged the body actually is. The gap comes from cryptosleep: time passes in the pod while the body doesn't age, so you'll see colonists with a chronological age of 17 but biological 18 (defined on the wiki's Characters page). Game mechanics run on biological age.
Worldbuilding Terms
Glitterworld
The setting's high-tech utopian planets: fully automated societies at the peak of art and technology — the most ideal, aspirational world type in the lore. In actual gameplay they show up as glitterworld medicine: the best drug in the game, uncraftable, buyable only from high-tier traders at roughly 55-70 silver (wiki). More worldbuilding in the lore guide.
Scarlands
One of Odyssey's new biomes: war-ruined cityscapes — craters, shattered roads, persistent heat and toxic rain. The most hostile of the five new biomes (see the wiki's Scarlands page).
Recruitment and Loyalty Terms
Unwaveringly loyal
Some prisoners carry this trait: they can never be recruited — it's the official counterweight against mind-whispering everyone into your colony. Two official-ish workarounds exist: turn the trait off in custom difficulty settings (still working as of 2026, confirmed in Steam community threads), and the enslave-then-arrest loop (Ludeon forums confirmed in 2022 that enslaving then arresting strips the loyalty trait). The second one is an unofficial loophole Ludeon never patched.
Creepjoiner
An Anomaly mechanic: bizarre characters who show up demanding to join, each with one positive ability and one negative effect (wiki). Variants include The Timeless One (immortal type) and the Deal Maker ("unbelievably good-looking," cannot take no for an answer). Community consensus: read the negative before accepting — blood-drinker joiners are often the mole.
Creature and Event Terms
- Thrumbo: rare giant horned beasts; their fur, horns and meat are extremely valuable and they fight hard. One early kill = a sudden windfall; tamed ones are nearly maintenance-free (wiki).
- Mechanoid: machine enemies — no eating, sleeping or moods; immune to fire, poison and extreme temperatures. The main late-game threat, and commandable units for Biotech mechanitors.
- Sapper: the raider type that tunnels around walls, ignoring your front-facing killbox — the community's most hated enemy.
- Drop pod raid: a raid that lands straight inside your base — the classic "enemies inside the walls" panic.
- Infestation: insects burrowing up from underground, forcing house-to-house fighting in your own base.
Implant and Gene Terms
Joywire
A brain implant: permanent big mood bonus, at the cost of permanently reduced consciousness (wiki). Commonly used for "never breaks down but slow" laborers, or to stabilize a colony on the edge of collapse. The consciousness loss drags down nearly every stat — don't install it on your main fighters.
Dirtmole
A Biotech xenotype: built for mountain life — top-tier mining, darkness-tolerant, but uncomfortable on the surface (wiki). Perfect for "underground cave" colonies.
Expertise
In Biotech's gene system, skill-type genes (mining/growing/medical expertise) implanted via xenogerm. In community speech, "expertise" often just means "veteran skill" — context decides: the gene, or the slang (the Genes wiki page covers the mechanic).
Community Slang Cheat Sheet
- Vanilla / Modded: no mods / with mods.
- QoL: Quality of Life — convenience mods that polish the experience.
- Killbox: funnel-shaped defensive zone (full design in the colony guide).
- Tynan: lead developer Tynan Sylvester — "Tynan said X" = official word.
- Tilt the Planet: careful — this is a 1.6-era graphics/lighting mod (realistic axial tilt lighting), not official content. Don't mistake it for part of the base game.
- Randy: short for Randy Random; shorthand for chaos.
One line to remember the three you'll meet most: pawn is "the person," wealth is "the aggro meter" (more wealth, meaner raids), and quadrum is "the 15-day season."
