All Remnant 2 weapon classes, how upgrading works, craftable boss weapons like Nightfall, and the best handguns, long guns and melee picks in 2026.
Remnant 2 Weapons Guide — All Gun Types, Upgrading, and the Best Picks
Remnant 2 has more than 100 weapons split across three classes — long guns, hand guns and melee — and almost every memorable one is a boss reward you take to McCabe to craft. Upgrading tops out at +20 for regular weapons and +10 for boss (special) weapons, and weapon mods plus mutators do most of the build-defining work on top. This guide covers how the whole weapon system fits together, the best picks in each class, and exactly how to get the community's favorites like Nightfall.

How Remnant 2 Weapons Work
Every weapon falls into one of three slots: a Long Gun (primary — shotguns, rifles, bows), a Hand Gun (secondary — pistols and SMGs), and a Melee Weapon. There's no rarity system like in Destiny or Borderlands — instead, every weapon has a fixed identity, and the build variety comes from what you bolt onto it: a weapon Mod (the active ability) and a Mutator (a passive enhancement). Boss weapons ship with a signature mod that can't be removed; regular weapons can be fitted with any mod you've bought or crafted from McCabe.
You get weapons four ways: purchased from merchants (Brabus in Ward 13 sells the bulk of the regular pool), found as loot in dungeons, rewarded for completing events, and crafted from boss materials at McCabe. The boss-crafting loop is the heart of the game — almost every boss drops a unique material (the Nightweaver drops Cursed Dream Silks, the Imposter King drops the Imposter's Heart, and so on) that McCabe turns into a unique weapon.
Per the official Steam store page, "REMNANT II® pits survivors of humanity against new deadly creatures and god-like bosses across terrifying worlds" — and every one of those bosses is a potential new gun.
Weapon Upgrades: Iron, Lumenite and the +20 Cap
Upgrading happens at Rigs in Ward 13, and it's one of the few real resource sinks in the game:
- Regular weapons upgrade +1 to +20. Levels 1-5 cost regular Iron (40 total), then Forged Iron (6-10), Galvanized Iron (11-15) and Hardened Iron (16-20). The final step, +19 to +20, requires a Simulacrum — bought from Cass in Ward 13 for 1,500 Scrap or found once per biome.
- Boss (special) weapons max out at +10 and cost Lumenite Crystals on top of Scrap and Iron (30 Iron, then 35 of each higher tier).
- Finding a duplicate weapon adds a +1 modifier to the one you own — a free upgrade step for free.
- Downgrading refunds only 50% of Scrap and loses 25% of materials, so think before you level.
Your Power Level — the number that scales world difficulty — is driven by your highest-upgraded weapon in each slot plus your archetype levels. Keeping your three weapons within a level or two of each other is the standard advice for smooth progression.

Weapon Mods and Mutators
Weapon Mods are active abilities that charge as you deal damage with the weapon. Each mod has its own charge meter, and checkpoints fully recharge them. Some mods are locked to a specific boss weapon (Nightfall's Dreadwalker, Deceit's Ouroboros), while others are bought or crafted from McCabe and slotted into any regular weapon with a free mod slot.
Mutators are the passive attachment system that arrived with the launch game's post-release patches: each weapon (including boss weapons) has a mutator slot, and Dwell in Ward 13 upgrades them to level 10. They're where a lot of 2026 meta damage actually comes from. A standout example is Charged Wounds, a ranged mutator that increases your fire rate and reload speed by 2.5% per Overloaded enemy within 15m (max 5 stacks), and at level 10 makes your weakspot and critical hits apply Overloaded. It drops from The Prototype, an Aberration in The Awakened King DLC that you assemble from spare parts scattered through the Agronomy Sector and Withered Necropolis (the Memory Core must stay on its default RED setting when inserted).
The Best Hand Guns
| Weapon | Type | Base Damage | How to get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anguish | Special | 17.5 | McCabe: Occult Vessel + 7 Lumenite + 1,000 Scrap |
| Star Shot | Special | 22 | N'Erud Supply Ship event |
| Enigma | Special | 22 | McCabe: Cipher Rod + 7 Lumenite + 650 Scrap |
| Sorrow | Special | 45 | Trade Tear of Kaeula with Meidra in Yaesha |
Anguish is the community's top handgun: it's a shotgun-style pistol whose charged shots become an explosive launcher, and its Loath the Weak mod turns it into an infinite-ammo machine gun briefly. Enigma chains lightning between enemies in a 7.5m radius and applies Overloaded — the best horde-clearer in the slot. Sorrow hits like a mini-crossbow (45 base damage) and its Eulogy mod recalls bolts for bonus damage plus healing.
The Best Long Guns
| Weapon | Type | Base Damage | How to get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monarch | Special | 12 | McCabe: Agony Spike + 7 Lumenite + 1,000 Scrap |
| Nightfall | Special | 31 | McCabe: Cursed Dream Silks + 7 Lumenite + 650 Scrap |
| Thorn | Special | 7 | McCabe: Regurgitated Spiny Sac (Kuri Kuri Egg, Yaesha) |
| Deceit | Special | 120 | McCabe: Imposter's Heart + 7 Lumenite + 650 Scrap |
Nightfall has been a top-tier pick since day one and still sits at the top of most tier lists. It fires hardened bone shards semi-automatically with bonus stagger, and activating Dreadwalker drops you into the nightmare realm: infinite ammo, boosted fire rate, lifesteal, and you're harder to hit — at the cost of locking out your other weapons and skills for the duration. The base stats are 31 damage at a 5% crit rate with a 105% weakspot bonus.
Deceit (120 base damage, 15% crit) is the sniper's answer, spawning orbiting swords via Ouroboros that shred anything that gets close. Monarch's Chain of Command mod harpoons a target and makes your rounds homing. Thorn fires homing explosive needles — forgiving for players still learning to aim.
The Best Melee Weapons
| Weapon | Type | Base Damage | How to get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wrathbringer | Special | 101 | McCabe: Tormentor's Pommel + 7 Lumenite + 1,000 Scrap |
| Iron Greatsword | Regular | 105 | Brabus, 500 Scrap (Challenger starting weapon) |
| Crystal Staff | Special | 58 | Coffin in Infested Abyss, Yaesha |
| Spectral Blade | Special | 53 | McCabe: Eidolon Shard + 7 Lumenite + 650 Scrap |
Wrathbringer is a "hammer" that swings far faster than it looks, and its Awakening mod stacks +5% melee damage up to 10 times. Crystal Staff turns your charged melee into seeking projectile bolts — melee that works at range. Iron Greatsword is the reliable budget pick, and Spectral Blade's Whirlwind mod can push single hits toward 200 damage in an 8m arc.
Once you've cleared the campaign, Boss Rush mode (added with The Dark Horizon) lets you farm random boss drops without rerolling worlds — a fast way to grab boss weapons and mods you missed. See our Boss Rush rewards & prism guide for the full farming loop, and our world drops farming guide for the materials you'll need to upgrade everything.
Upgrading Efficiently: The Resource Reality
Weapon progression is Scrap-hungry: every level costs Scrap on top of Iron, and the boss weapons eat Lumenite Crystals you'll be farming from elites. Two habits keep you from stalling:
- Don't spread levels. Pick one long gun, one hand gun, one melee, and keep them even — your Power Level follows the average, so a maxed weapon and a +1 weapon drags the world level up without helping you.
- Sell nothing rare until you've checked McCabe. Duplicate boss materials are free weapon levels, and duplicate weapons add +1.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best weapon in Remnant 2?
For most players it's Nightfall (long gun) for its Dreadwalker lifesteal window, with Anguish (hand gun) and Wrathbringer (melee) completing a top-tier kit. Tier lists shift with patches, but those three have been consensus picks since 2024.
How do I get the Nightfall weapon?
Defeat the Nightweaver, the Losomn world boss in the Morrow Parish storyline, to get Cursed Dream Silks, then craft Nightfall at McCabe in Ward 13 for 7 Lumenite Crystals and 650 Scrap.
What is the max weapon level in Remnant 2?
Regular weapons upgrade to +20 (the last step needs a Simulacrum). Boss and special weapons cap at +10 and also require Lumenite Crystals.
How many weapons are in Remnant 2?
Over 100 across the base game and three DLCs — roughly 30 hand guns, 40 long guns and 45 melee weapons including the corrupted variants.
What are mutators in Remnant 2?
Mutators are passive weapon attachments (upgraded to level 10 by Dwell in Ward 13) that add damage, utility or status effects — like Charged Wounds' fire-rate buff per Overloaded enemy. They're a major part of endgame builds.
