How the Helldivers 2 galactic map works: sectors, liberation %, Major Orders, Galactic Campaigns, the DSS, and the best live map trackers in 2026.
Helldivers 2 Galactic Map — How to Read It and Track the War
The galactic map in Helldivers 2 is the live war screen on your Super Destroyer: it shows every sector and planet, each front's liberation percentage, the current Major Orders, and — since June 2026 — the active Galactic Campaign. Every mission you play feeds into this map. Finishing missions on a planet pushes its liberation percentage up; the community's combined playtime decides whether planets get liberated, defended, or lost. If you want to know where to fight and why, this map is the entire answer, and it updates in real time as the whole player base plays.
This guide breaks down every layer of the map — sectors and supply lines, liberation math, Major Orders vs Galactic Campaigns, the Control Center terminal, the DSS, and the best third-party live trackers (including the answer to "is there a live Helldivers 2 map?" — yes, several).

What the Galactic Map Actually Shows
Open the map from your ship's Galactic War table and you see the galaxy split into sectors — the game has roughly 50+ sectors, each containing several planets. Per the official wiki's Battle Tracker page, the war is organized around "Battles": any liberation or defence campaign on a world ends when the planet is liberated, lost, or successfully defended. Each planet display carries four pieces of information:
- Owner — Super Earth (liberated) or an enemy faction (Terminids, Automatons, Illuminate).
- Liberation % — how close the current campaign is to flipping the planet. 100% = liberated.
- Decay rate — enemy resistance per hour. A planet with −1.0%/h decay fights back against your progress even while you sleep.
- Player activity — how many Helldivers are currently deployed there (shown in trackers and, since 2026, more clearly in-game via the Control Center).
Planets connect through supply lines — you can only fight on planets your faction can actually reach from liberated territory. That's why the map sometimes shows a planet you "can't deploy to": the supply line is cut.
Terminids (bugs) and Automatons (bots) hold territory as persistent fronts with supply lines. The Illuminate (squids) mostly attack — their invasions hit Super Earth-controlled worlds and, as the Battle Tracker notes, a proper Illuminate front line cannot always be determined. When you see a random planet suddenly under invasion, that's the Illuminate attacking from their own staging.
How Liberation Works: The Math
Liberation percentage is a community-wide scoreboard with a simple rule: missions completed successfully on a planet push the percentage up, enemy decay pushes it down, and the planet flips when it hits 100%. The deeper mechanics, cross-checked between the official wiki and GamesRadar's guide:
- Higher difficulty = bigger contribution. Missions on harder difficulties add far more liberation progress per operation, up to a 250% multiplier on Helldive difficulty.
- Failures cost progress. Failed missions and operations can reduce the percentage — that's the risk-reward of pushing high difficulties.
- Decay is relentless. Planets under enemy control regenerate progress over time (the Battle Tracker logs hourly decay changes like "Heeth decay rate changes to -1.0% per hour"), which is why a planet with a small player base can stall at 80% for days.
- Sectors close when fully liberated. Once every planet in a sector is Super Earth-controlled, missions stop spawning there and the sector locks.
So the practical question is always the same: is the rate of successful missions on this planet higher than its decay rate? If yes, the percentage climbs. If not, you're wasting your time — which is exactly why community trackers exist.
Major Orders vs Galactic Campaigns (2026)
The biggest change to the map's logic came with Update 6.3.0 on June 16, 2026: Major Orders evolved into Galactic War Campaigns. Before, the map carried one-off Major Orders (do X missions, get medals). Now, per IGN's patch report and the official wiki's Campaigns page:
- Campaigns last 1–3 weeks and chain multiple Major Orders into one narrative arc with a real outcome — fail a stage and the enemy counterattacks, forcing the community to retake ground.
- Each campaign has a named reward. The first campaign's reward was teased by game director Mikael Eriksson as "a new FRV!" — victory in a majority of the campaign's Major Orders unlocks it for the whole community.
- The Control Center terminal is the map's new hub. Located opposite the armory on your ship, it shows the active campaign, progression percentages, and an archive of past campaigns once the first one concludes.
Official source: Helldivers Wiki — Campaigns — "Campaigns (also known as Galactic War Campaigns) are supplements to the Galactic War system in Helldivers 2 that narratively link Major Orders."
The Campaigns system means the map now has two layers: the live planetary front (what you see when you zoom in) and the campaign layer (the 1–3 week story arc you should be contributing to).
The DSS: A Third Layer on the Map
The Democracy Space Station (DSS) is a player-deployed super-weapon that moves between planets and affects the map while deployed. It appears on the map as a station marker; when active, it can provide effects like Orbital Blockade (blocking enemy progress on a planet). The community votes on where the DSS goes via a separate in-game menu, and its position matters for both liberation progress and the ongoing campaigns. The Battle Tracker logs DSS movements ("DSS deploys to Omicron," "DSS effect Orbital Blockade is activated"), so you can see its impact on the historical record.
Is There a Live Helldivers 2 Map? (Live Trackers)
Yes — the game itself updates the map continuously, but the numbers behind it (exact decay rates, player counts per planet, precise progress-per-hour) are easier to read in third-party tools that pull the official game API. The ones the community actually uses:
| Tracker | What it does |
|---|---|
| helldivers.io | Tracks every active planet, player counts, and whether the liberation rate is positive or negative; the classic community favorite |
| hd2galaxy.com | Live interactive galactic map, zoomable by sector, with current campaign data |
| divers.gg liberation map | Liberation status + player counts per planet, auto-refreshing |
| Battle Tracker (wiki.gg) | The full historical log of every battle, campaign, and DSS movement since 2024 |
We maintain a dedicated roundup of these tools in our Helldivers 2 live map guide, including how each one reads the API and which updates fastest.
Before you deploy, check a tracker for the current campaign target planet and the liberation delta (progress per hour). If a planet shows a negative delta despite thousands of players, the decay is outpacing the effort — fight on the planet with the best positive delta that still advances the campaign. This is how coordinated communities win campaign rewards like the FRV.
Which Planet Should You Fight On?
Rule of thumb for deciding where to drop:
- Follow the active Campaign — the Control Center terminal and its Major Orders tell you the campaign's priority planet. Campaigns have exclusive rewards; individual planets mostly don't.
- Check the delta, not the %. A planet at 3% with a strong positive delta finishes faster than a planet stuck at 70% with heavy decay.
- Defend before you liberate. If the campaign needs a defence held (as with Seyshel Beach in the Avengement Day story, covered in our Avengement Day guide), defending is usually the bottleneck — losing a defence resets progress and can trigger enemy counteroffensives under the Campaigns system.
- Build your loadout for the faction you're fighting. A bug front and a bot front want different tools — see the best weapons tier list for faction-specific picks before you commit.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the galactic map work in Helldivers 2?
It's a live war screen: sectors contain planets, each with an owner, liberation percentage, decay rate and player activity. Completing missions on a planet raises its liberation %; the combined effort of all players flips planets at 100%. Major Orders and Galactic Campaigns (since June 2026) direct the community toward specific targets.
How do you liberate planets in Helldivers 2?
Run missions on the target planet faster than its decay rate regenerates. Higher difficulties contribute much more per mission (up to a 250% multiplier on Helldive), while failed missions can push the percentage down. Once all planets in a sector are liberated, the sector locks.
What is a Galactic Campaign in Helldivers 2?
A 1–3 week narrative arc that chains several Major Orders into one campaign, introduced in Update 6.3.0 (June 2026). Campaigns have community rewards (the first teased reward was a new FRV) and failures can trigger enemy counteroffensives.
Is there a live Helldivers 2 map?
Yes. The in-game map updates live, and third-party trackers like helldivers.io, hd2galaxy.com and divers.gg pull the official API for exact decay rates, player counts and progress deltas. The wiki.gg Battle Tracker keeps the full historical log.
What is the Control Center terminal in Helldivers 2?
A terminal added in Update 6.3.0, located opposite the armory on your Super Destroyer. It shows the active Galactic Campaign, real-time progression, and an archive of concluded campaigns so new players can catch up on the war's history.
